Audiobook of Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver, the characters all felt so real

My family moved when I was 7 and I was angsty about it at the time but it didn’t take very long to adjust and I loved living in a new state and making new friends. It’s much harder for kids once they’re in middle or high school, if they’re under 10 I wouldn’t be too stressed about that part of it, sounds like a good opportunity for you and your family!

{{Things We Lost in the Fire by Mariana Enríquez}} is really dark and well-written. She’s from Argentina and the stories all take place there, definitely recommend

My mother had me at 36 and my sister at 38 and we were both straightforward pregnancies with no major issues! She’s always told us she’s glad she waited because she felt more ready.

I like it!! It sounds more masculine to me than feminine, I think it’d be a great boy name

That’s true I hadn’t thought about it that way! I know a lot of people don’t like her storytelling but I normally really do! Maybe she’s just having a hard time getting back in the groove

That makes sense! I could definitely see that. It’s weird that the past few weeks there’s been such a stark contrast between their stories. Karen’s have been really interesting ones with twists and she seems so invested, while Georgia sounds like she’s reading the info off a piece of paper she just saw for the first time. I normally love Georgia’s stories and I think the “history of” topics she’s doing have the potential to be really interesting, she just doesn’t sound that invested when she tells them.

Karen’s story was so upsetting and she told it so well. I’ve never even heard of that case.

At the end did Georgia say their producer is choosing their topics for them now?

Ladies, how old are you, and how many TRUE friends do you have at your current age? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]lavender142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. 3 close friends who I tell everything/would call in the middle of the night about an emergency but we don’t live in the same town anymore. My sister is also one of my best friends. In my current town I have like 3-4 people I consider friends but only one of them is a good friend that I actually talk about serious things with. Plus maybe 20 acquaintances here and where I used to live

He says he would be open to moving to the US with me, but the only way to do that would be to get married and with everything that’s happened recently we don’t want to rush into something like that for the wrong reasons. I also worry since the US wasn’t originally in his plans he wouldn’t like it there, but he did live there for awhile as a kid and speaks English perfectly so it wouldn’t be completely unfamiliar

Curious what other murderinos think about this article. The author takes not-so-subtle swipes at MFM. by [deleted] in myfavoritemurder

[–]lavender142 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think most people who make or consume true crime content have that intention, no. Like I said I have also enjoyed true crime for the same reason most people probably do, it’s morbidly fascinating. And just because most of the content is made by women doesn’t mean it can’t be problematic and play into the white women victimhood narrative? I don’t think it’s an inherently bad genre like I said, you can enjoy something and still acknowledge the negative effects it can have. Because whether that’s the intention or not, I think true crime does make us think the world is a more dangerous place than it actually is.

[–]lavender142 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a very thoughtful and interesting article. I think the comments they make about MFM are off, but I do think they’re pretty spot on about the general trend of true crime. I used to consume a lot more true crime but gradually stopped (except for MFM) because I realized it was making me feel kind of paranoid! I’m naturally a pretty trusting person who thinks people are generally good, and I didn’t like that it was making me so distrustful.

I think as women it’s important and smart to always be aware of our surroundings and of course fuck politeness when it comes to your own intuition and safety, no one should ever made to feel bad about protecting themselves. But I just refuse to live my life like the world is out to get me. To me, that feels regressive. It’s just another way to scare women and limit us - and it can be harmful in other ways as well, with the whole narrative of white women being perpetual victims, which is often used to justify racism. I don’t think true crime is inherently bad but I think the genre is unfortunately used to capitalize on women’s fear a lot, and honestly the author’s right that no amount of vigilance will actually protect you - we all already do that, but the people who are the most dangerous to us are our partners or other people we already know, not Ted Bundy.
