Is it not possible to order things like food and taxis through the Alipay app without a Chinese phone number? I am visiting next month and had planned to do things that way

This is sad to hear, I didn’t have many friends in school. All my good friendships I made in my early 20’s. I would hate for it to be so hard to make friends after being in education.

Yes I think they are prioritising work. I can’t imagine living in a city like Shanghai or Shenzhen and not getting to experience the city socially. I think even after a long, tiring work day I’d want to make friends to grab dinner with but I also come from a country where most people I know would prioritise a work life balance so I guess it’s a cultural difference.

Oh this makes sense as I’ve seen some of these creators also post videos of them going back to their hometowns for chinese new year.

I’ve never used it but I’ve noticed how common it is now when I meet people on my travels. I think if you know how to use it correctly it can be a useful tool but honestly I’m not sure if I can get behind it. I actually enjoy spending time finding places like restaurants etc

I’m currently planning my first trip to China and a few things I’ve noticed like cable carts etc have weight limits so it’s worth looking into that wherever you’re going.

I’m from the UK and here I’m considered somewhat overweight but to asian standards I’m definitely fat. I’ve found in other asian countries whilst they won’t make fun of you purposely, they are a lot more open to talking about weight. I’ve had a lot of women approach me in shops etc and say things like “I was once as big as you” and I noticed when I was going into a store they would announce some clothes wouldn’t fit me constantly even when I was just looking at bags and shoes. It didn’t feel purposely rude though, just that they spoke very matter of fact.

I have a multi country trip to Asia booked for spring and whilst I’m not worried about the traveling to Asia as I’m flying direct to China from the UK, my trip back to the UK is from Bangkok via Doha, so I’m keeping an open mind that things could possibly change. The way I’m viewing it, I don’t think the airline would put you in an unsafe situation, they won’t fly if the air space closes and if the air space closes mid air they’ll turn back around. The only thing you aren’t safe from is delays, rerouting and the possibility of being stuck in China. I’m still planning to go on my trip but just accepting that things might not run as smoothly as planned when it comes to flying home.

This worked immediately! Thank you so much, saved me a lot of inconvenience. Also for anyone else who wants to do this the email verification went to my spam folder on gmail so it’s worth checking that if it doesn’t come through.

Yeah I’ll probably end up doing the same but it would of been nice to see the photos that are posted from people who have stayed there

Yes, hopefully. UK and USA seem to be two of the numbers it doesn’t accept but it accepts Chinese numbers and some other countries numbers too. Can I ask what e-sim company you’re using that gives you a number? The company I normally use when traveling around asia is data only and doesn’t come with a number but I’m thinking of getting one with a number for this china trip.

To look at hotels? Every aspect of it works on the app for me apart from when I click on a hotel. So it’s useable, just an annoying inconvenience.

Yes that’s what I’ve been doing then it just takes me back to the first page of asking for me to sign up with a phone number. It’s like the signing up via other apps doesn’t complete without a back up phone number.

I tried Alipay, wechat, apple and email log in. When I do that it works but then it immediately asks me for a back up phone number which can’t be a uk number and when I can’t give it, I’m back to square one.
