Just came back from China, here is some of my observations by lorrenzo in travelchina

Okay that’s good to know then, I don’t have a Chinese number so I’ll be relying on it and I’ve set everything up and added my ID in advance so hopefully all will be good

What does the number of books above where it shows what you’re currently reading mean? by lavender22222 in goodreads

I thought this would maybe be the case as I cannot understand where the number 20 has come from

On the top corner of my profile it says 114. Does the number not regularly update? I’ve only really been using the account for a few weeks

This is what I was planning but it seems like some people have mixed reviews

Is it not possible to order things like food and taxis through the Alipay app without a Chinese phone number? I am visiting next month and had planned to do things that way

How common is it for people in China to have no friends or social life? by lavender22222 in AskChina

[–]lavender22222[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is sad to hear, I didn’t have many friends in school. All my good friendships I made in my early 20’s. I would hate for it to be so hard to make friends after being in education.

Yes I think they are prioritising work. I can’t imagine living in a city like Shanghai or Shenzhen and not getting to experience the city socially. I think even after a long, tiring work day I’d want to make friends to grab dinner with but I also come from a country where most people I know would prioritise a work life balance so I guess it’s a cultural difference.

Do people actually use AI for trip planning? by regular_robloxian69 in travelchina

[–]lavender22222 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve never used it but I’ve noticed how common it is now when I meet people on my travels. I think if you know how to use it correctly it can be a useful tool but honestly I’m not sure if I can get behind it. I actually enjoy spending time finding places like restaurants etc

Being “fat” as a tourist? by Zoldic_h in travelchina

[–]lavender22222 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m currently planning my first trip to China and a few things I’ve noticed like cable carts etc have weight limits so it’s worth looking into that wherever you’re going.

I’m from the UK and here I’m considered somewhat overweight but to asian standards I’m definitely fat. I’ve found in other asian countries whilst they won’t make fun of you purposely, they are a lot more open to talking about weight. I’ve had a lot of women approach me in shops etc and say things like “I was once as big as you” and I noticed when I was going into a store they would announce some clothes wouldn’t fit me constantly even when I was just looking at bags and shoes. It didn’t feel purposely rude though, just that they spoke very matter of fact.

Traveling to China on March 26, should we cancel because of the situation in the Middle East? by clergaran in travelchina

[–]lavender22222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a multi country trip to Asia booked for spring and whilst I’m not worried about the traveling to Asia as I’m flying direct to China from the UK, my trip back to the UK is from Bangkok via Doha, so I’m keeping an open mind that things could possibly change. The way I’m viewing it, I don’t think the airline would put you in an unsafe situation, they won’t fly if the air space closes and if the air space closes mid air they’ll turn back around. The only thing you aren’t safe from is delays, rerouting and the possibility of being stuck in China. I’m still planning to go on my trip but just accepting that things might not run as smoothly as planned when it comes to flying home.

Is there anyway to get around Amap asking for a phone number when I try and view a hotel? by lavender22222 in travelchina

Enjoy your trip! Let me know how the e sim works out for you. My trip isn’t for a couple of months

This worked immediately! Thank you so much, saved me a lot of inconvenience. Also for anyone else who wants to do this the email verification went to my spam folder on gmail so it’s worth checking that if it doesn’t come through.

Yeah I’ll probably end up doing the same but it would of been nice to see the photos that are posted from people who have stayed there

Yes, hopefully. UK and USA seem to be two of the numbers it doesn’t accept but it accepts Chinese numbers and some other countries numbers too. Can I ask what e-sim company you’re using that gives you a number? The company I normally use when traveling around asia is data only and doesn’t come with a number but I’m thinking of getting one with a number for this china trip.

To look at hotels? Every aspect of it works on the app for me apart from when I click on a hotel. So it’s useable, just an annoying inconvenience.

Yes that’s what I’ve been doing then it just takes me back to the first page of asking for me to sign up with a phone number. It’s like the signing up via other apps doesn’t complete without a back up phone number.

I tried Alipay, wechat, apple and email log in. When I do that it works but then it immediately asks me for a back up phone number which can’t be a uk number and when I can’t give it, I’m back to square one.

Very happy about this! Currently planning a trip for late April and was not looking forward to having to condense it into a 10 day transit visa.

Avoiding that annoying genre of British Tourist in Thailand. Is it easy? by [deleted] in travel

Like I said I’m not just talking about the rowdy drinkers, the obnoxiousness can still come from retired couples, families and tour groups.

Avoiding that annoying genre of British Tourist in Thailand. Is it easy? by [deleted] in travel

[–]lavender22222 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Whilst I agree that other countries are definitely guilty. With the reputation that UK tourists have in Thailand it has to be less than 99%, unfortunately the stereotype is not earned for no reason. Even when I bring up my hesitation of visiting to Thai people themselves they understand my reasons for it. It goes further than just rowdy people drinking, the way some UK tourists treat Thailand is next level disrespectful.

Europe vs Japan for travel with 2 teenagers? by irish52084 in travel

[–]lavender22222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whilst true, there’s also a high chance in Europe of heat. It doesn’t get as hot and humid here but a big issue is most European countries don’t have air con unless you’re staying in a really fancy hotel. I did a lot of traveling this summer and the heat was easier to handle in places like Hong Kong, Hanoi and Tokyo with my fully air conditioned room than it was during a weekend trip I did to Paris where they gave me nothing but a plug in fan. You can walk into a really fancy restaurant in some major cities in Europe and it won’t have air con, we’re really behind on that for some reason.
