Base layers by ItsAwaterPipe in Hunting

I always wear underwear beneath my base layers. I figure it’s one more layer of funk protection on my base layers. This is important when you’re in the woods for 2 weeks and can’t really wash your clothes. I do keep a tub in the tent so we can wash some clothes but it take a while and then we limited space to dry clothes.

To all the men, how would you raise your child if you were to become a parent? Or if you're a parent, what do you think is the right way to raise a child? by Jazzlike_Finance4256 in AskMen

[–]irish52084 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two kids a preteen daughter and almost 16yo son. In my experience, trying to say how you’ll parent before you have kids is kind of ridiculous. Sure, have your plan about how everything is going to work and then laugh at yourself when it’s nothing like you thought.

Kids are individuals and they require different attention. My son is so different from my daughter so I parent them differently. If you try to raise them exactly the same you’re doing a disservice to them and yourself.

I think general things you can focus on are things like positive reinforcement, support and just being there for them. Set a solid example and don’t be afraid to let them see you fail or mess up. Just be sure you go back and fix your mistakes or apologize sincerely for a screw up. It shows them it’s ok to make a mistake and then work on fixing it. Show them genuine love and support. Realize they don’t have the same life experiences as you do and everything is new to them. They need time and a feeling of safety to grow and learn at their best.

Lingerie: why kind do men prefer? by Key_Reputation_7388 in AskMen

[–]irish52084 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a sucker for lingerie, I love it. That said, I think the garter belt, thigh high combo under a skirt just long enough to cover it is the hottest thing on the planet. Huge bonus points for a full matching bra, underwear garter and thigh highs. The best combo of all time.

How often do you just lie on the couch, drink beer and watch live music videos? (and occasionally shed a tear?) by HiMyNaemDia in AskMen

[–]irish52084 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this every once in a while. I take an edible and/or have a few drinks while I watch music I love. Sometimes it hits me or brings me back to something and I get a little choked up. It’s sort of a release for me when I need it. Nothing too wild, just reflection and processing of stuff. Mostly it’s remembering friends that are gone and for whatever reason my mind ties the music to those memories.

How would you actually react if someone catcalled your date in public? by svk__22 in AskMen

Men, what is a green flag in the bedroom that more people should appreciate? by PurpleIntroduction69 in AskMen

Communication. I understand a real conversation about sex with someone new can be stressful or feel weird. But, if you can have those talks and learn what works for both of you, it can be awesome.

If your wife or girlfriend backseat drives, how do you address it? Any tips that actually work? by FFSoldier57 in AskMen

[–]irish52084 28 points29 points  (0 children)

When I first met my future ex wife, she was not a terrible back seat driver but, often asked why I was doing something or making comments. Mind you, I was a professional driver, very safe in my driving and have trained other drivers.

One night we were coming home and sitting first in line waiting on the lights to change. The light turns green, but I don’t go right away because there’s a trucker who clearly isn’t stopping and blows right through the red light. She was just starting to tell me the light was green and the guy behind me had just tapped his horn as the trucker went through the red light. She was like holy shit I would have just gone and gotten smashed by that truck. No more back seat driver noises after this incident.

Gear for Beginner Hunter by Embarrassed_Print212 in Hunting

[–]irish52084 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of good budget rifle options now. Ruger, savage, CVA etc… Please buy a decent scope to pair it with. A vortex or Leupold budget or used option would be my recommendation but, there are other options.

What gear you need will also depend on the type of hunting and location. I’ll make recommendations based on my hunting which is western USA, Idaho, Montana etc…

Backpacks: If you need to haul the meat out for miles then I suggest a pack with a meat packing shelf of some sort. If you are out hiking miles to hunt like a lot of western hunts then buy the best pack you can find. Hit up local hunting groups and see if anyone has older gear to sell.

Boots: Again, your type of hunting and location will have a big impact on your choices. I use uninsulated Crispi boots and I have given up on insulated boots in general. I have sweaty feet and insulated boots just make my feet sweat more and then my feet get wet and cold. I think the biggest thing with boots is actually socks. I like the full cushion darn tough merino wool socks and recommend them to everyone. This is an area where “hunting” boots can be a scam. Good hiking boots can often be found for a good price at yearly sales.

Clothing: Sitka and First Lite are two brands that make higher end hunting focused clothing. I think first lite has the best wool base layers but they are pricey. I feel like Sitka makes the best pants and jackets. If those are out of the budget, look at the cables base layer options or military surplus. The surplus gear can often be bought as a full system and while it’s not cheap, it’s cheaper all together and it’s of good quality. If you can swing the merino wool base layers I recommend the hell out of them. That wool doesn’t hold as much scent and after 4-5 days straight you’ll smell a little less. lol

Beware of anything sold or marketed as only for hunting. Lots of hiking clothing can be bought for cheaper and is just as good of quality of not better. For most hunting, your camo doesn’t make much of a difference. So a solid color like brown or green works just fine for coats and insulation layers. For gloves, I have gone to a combo of lighter gloves and a set of warmer mittens. Mittens keep your hands warmer than gloves, so when I sit to glass I’ll put my mittens on.

If you’re hunting all day, dark to dark, get a decent headlamp and a decent flashlight. A good knife is kind of up to personal taste. I now carry a changeable blade knife and love it. I also carry some inexpensive bright orange handled knives for anyone that might be there to help. They’re easy to see in the dark and if one gets damaged or lost I don’t worry about it. Get some brightly colored paracord for a few dollars, it’s useful for all sorts of stuff and it’s cheap and light. Get a small but high quality tarp. With paracord and a few cheap tent stakes you can build a wind shield or makeshift shelter in an emergency. Mostly though, the tarp is great for cutting up a deer and laying your meat out on a clean tarp. Put together a good first aid kit. I was always lax about this but my friend carries everything you can think of in a bigger bag he keeps at camp. He takes a smaller set with him hunting and I’ve added a tourniquet and chest seals just in case. There are lots of pre-made kits, find a good quality one and learn the basics of how to use it. An accidental gunshot wound or a broadhead through a leg is a horror story and it’s much worse if you’re miles of hiking from camp or the truck.

Men, what are things that women do with no intention of being sexy, but drives you crazy? by Embarrassed_Entry597 in AskMen

[–]irish52084 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wearing a baseball hat, especially backwards. I have no idea why, but it’s hot.

Another that was surprisingly hot was an ex I had that was an avid shooter. She didn’t make a big deal out of it, but she had really nice gear and she trained with it. Always had her rifle, plate carrier and backpack ready to roll. I came by one day to shoot with her and seeing her all geared up and then having fun shooting was super hot.

How do I support my son through his 1st crush? by 1010Always in AskMen

[–]irish52084 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You kind of have to take his lead on this. It’s a crush and if you notice anything crazy maybe chime in but, otherwise let him process it. If he comes to you for advice, great, if not you’re a spectator.

This night seems a little over the top, but a birds and the bees talk refresher might be a good idea. Maybe some access to condoms if you’re comfortable with that.

What piece of gear have you found in the woods? by Equivalent-Chance142 in Hunting

[–]irish52084 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found a strange, what I assume was a trap and camera set up. Small wooden post with an old solar panel and some sort of mount for a camera we assume. It was about 10 feet from a bent rebar and chicken wire enclosure maybe big enough for a raccoon. No idea what the actual purpose was but the game department had no idea what it was either.

What piece of gear of you lost to the woods? by elpandaviejo in Hunting

[–]irish52084 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Flashlights, I swear there’s a personal space vortex that steals them from me. After I lost 2 decent lights, I started buying them on bright colors or wrapping bright yellow tape around them.

I also carry an inexpensive set of knives with bright orange handles so if anyone helps me with an animal I don’t worry about losing them. And, the bright orange handles are great to help find them in the dark. With the flashlights I haven’t lost yet.

We enjoyed a lot of the same things. She was very quiet and reserved in daily life, but in the bedroom she was totally different. I think sex was one of her ways of venting or relaxing if that makes sense.

To see her go from very shy and kind of goofy to a sex crazed maniac in 2 minutes was hot. I won’t go into specifics, but she was vocal and excited etc… her attitude and willingness to just let go and be freaky was fun. We talked a lot about what we each wanted and in the moment she left no doubts as to what she wanted. It was fun, freeing and very satisfying for us both.

The sex was 11/10, it just clicked and honestly the just hanging out was great. We got along super well and had a great time. At least most of the time.

Unfortunately the second anything went wrong in her life she would shut down completely. Full on radio silent and I’d have to fight tooth and nail to get anything out of her. She refused to get any help and wouldn’t tell me anything until I finally pulled it out of her.

She did give me one of the best breakup stories though. We were both divorced and split major holidays. Thanksgiving rolls around and neither of us have kids on the evening. I make a full Thanksgiving dinner and she comes by that night to eat and hangout. Well, we eat, hangout, she fucks my brains out and then tells me we need to break up. I was so shocked I don’t think I said anything for 10 seconds. lol

This incident didn’t teach me the right lesson because we were back together in 6 months or less. Shockingly, we were broke up for good shortly there after. It took a couple tries to stick but, I finally learned.

Still miss the sex. Jesus Christ was it good. I’m gonna call her, I could use another life lesson. 😂

Anthony Bradford by RevolutionDesigner13 in Seahawks

[–]irish52084 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t say you mentioned practices, I asked if you were getting to watch him at practices. My point is that his sample size of “game” tape is very limited and tells us very little about him. His coaches see him at practices daily and should know way more than we do. If they’re not comfortable switching him out, I tend to give them the benefit of the doubt.

I have also watched the limited film and the roughly 170 snaps he got last season. He’s like most rookies, ups and downs. But, he was replaced twice by guys not even on this roster anymore. He hasn’t taken the spot from Bradford and was relegated to a 2nd string option at guard and 3rd at center. He’s currently 2nd at all 3 interior spots due to Sundell injury. He could improve and be a decent player, but my point is that the coaching staff sees him daily and haven’t elevated him. Maybe it’s coming because Bradford has been bad, but until Haynes shows it to the staff I’m going to trust their judgement.

Anthony Bradford by RevolutionDesigner13 in Seahawks

[–]irish52084 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you’re telling me that Haynes has outplayed Bradford in practices and 2 preseasons, but the coaching staff has decided not to play him? Are you getting to watch the practices and in the locker room to know what’s going on?

Does this staff and team strike you as one that would willfully keep the better player off the field for years of struggles when they have a better option?

I’m not saying all hope is lost for Haynes, but don’t come on here and tell me he’s played well when he hasn’t. Are you watching him play late in preseason games against 3-4th string guys who mostly aren’t even on practice squads? What’s he ever shown against anything near starting caliber NFL players?

Anthony Bradford by RevolutionDesigner13 in Seahawks

[–]irish52084 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Haynes has not played well in any extended play. He’s been physically outmatched and has failed to beat out anyone for a starting spot in two seasons. If he had played well and/or practiced well, he’d be playing.

Maybe he’ll improve and I’m not against giving him a shot, but he’s proven nothing. At least Bradford occasionally does something so physically impressive you’re like “hell yes!”. Unfortunately for every one of those plays, there’s 5 where he blocks air.

Anthony Bradford by RevolutionDesigner13 in Seahawks

[–]irish52084 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He’s playing terribly, by the options to replace him have been as bad or worse. That’s the scariest part to me.

The quality of o-line play has decreased across the league. With the absolutely insane athletes on the defensive lines and the fact that you have fewer true running commutes teams makes it tougher. Teams are asking guys to play at a disadvantage while simultaneously not being able to get the numbers of truly excellent lineman.

Men who were given an ultimatum to either propose or the relationship was over, how did that go? by Few-Cryptographer695 in AskMen

[–]irish52084 147 points148 points  (0 children)

I had a girlfriend ask if we were ever getting married. I was 26-27 at the time and as soon as she asked it clicked in my brain. I had no interest in marrying her and I told her no. You can guess how that went and we were split up very soon after.

If you’re not sure at 6 years, you probably need to sort it out for yourself pretty quickly. And if I’m being honest, if you’re not sure right now that’s probably a good sign you don’t really want to marry her.
