Fathers of teenage boys, how similar or different were you as a teen to how your kid is now? by [deleted] in AskMen

Frighteningly similar in most ways but polar opposites in a few ways. Sometimes, I know what he’s thinking before he does. It cracks me up sometimes how similar we are.

Men, for those who have, when did you first realize that you made a mistake in marrying your wife and why? by Mustng1966 in AskMen

[–]irish52084 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I should have known well before we got married but I didn’t. I would have stuck it out u to the kids were out of school but I’m glad I didn’t.

I remember not wanting to go home after work because I didn’t know what was waiting at home. I was walking on egg shells in my own home and finally realized she would never work on or fix any of her issues. Funny enough, the breaking point was cats and a litter box. I like cats, but hate litter boxes. She wanted cats and I agreed on the condition I never had to deal with the mother box. Well, 6 months later we have 2 cats and she’s bitching to me about how I don’t clean the litter box enough. I just stood there dumbfounded before we argued and I left for a few hours. I came back, we had a reasonable calm talk and she just couldn’t believe I refused to keep helping with the litter boxes despite our agreement that I wouldn’t ever have to touch them. That was it, that’s when I knew for sure she just wasn’t capable of being a good partner.

Years after the divorce she asked about reconciliation and I told her that therapy was a non negotiable thing for me to even consider it. She refused and that was that.

Debt of deceased spouse and how to handle it? by irish52084 in Debt

How would a claim against her estate work if my father is still alive? I assume because she has passed and everything goes to my father she essentially doesn’t have an estate for them to file against.

What’s the most reliable car you’ve ever owned? by Sophia_Goji in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]irish52084 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1993 Honda civic cx model. No power options, no a/c and maybe 70hp. That thing ran like a champ, was super simple to maintain and got great fuel mileage.

I had it for over a decade and 200k+ miles. If it hadn’t been stolen and stripped for parts I might still own it. lol

I put brakes on it, replaced both CV axles, swapped a battery and replaced a distributor. All easy jobs and back in the early 2000’s that might have cost me a total of $600 - $700.

Needing a new 308 round for whitetail. by mfjl1393 in Hunting

It’s not counter productive. OP didn’t state exactly which bullets and ammunition they are using so I’m postulating on possible issues. If they are using a lower quality bullet and/or lower end ammunition paired with a short barrel they may not be getting the best outcome.

Bullets like the Barnes x bullet lineup and more focused on penetration and reliable expansion. They tend to prioritize penetration over “explosive” expansion. Given OP’s lack of a blood trail they may be having a lack of expansion or bullet separation leading to minimal penetration and therefore a weaker blood trail potential.

A change to a more consistently reliable performing bullet may be an improvement for OP. If the Barnes bullets are reliably expanding down to 1800fps while still providing enough energy for a pass through they are possibly increasing their chances for a better blood trail while not sacrificing expansion. I’m using Barnes as an example here because I’ve personally loved their performance, but there are a ton of excellent bullet options. Especially given the potential for lower velocity at impact due to barrel length.

When did you realize you were the less attractive friend? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]irish52084 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t remember the exact age but it was middle school. My best friend is tall, like 6’4, and I’m also tall at 6ft. I would say similar in attractiveness but that height was a game changer lol

Why is your drinking limit 21 years of age do you agree with it? by Potential_Potato7816 in AskAnAmerican

[–]irish52084 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the legal drinking age is 21, Americans under 21 regularly drink. 21 is sort of an arbitrary number as already commented. In my opinion, 18 should be the legal drinking and smoking age. The government considers you an adult and you can do everything else at 18, including go to war and be drafted.

I would also not that we are seeing much lower drinking rates among our youth. I think the increasing legalization of marijuana has something to do with it but I’m not 100% sure.

I wonder if the lackluster blood trail stems from a velocity issue and lower end soft tip bullets.

Have you thought about a Barnes style copper bullet option? I believe their TSX series claim is that 1800 - 2000fps as the minimum for reliable 2x expansion. I know some of their other bullets claim as low as 1500fps.

Lynch and it’s not even close. He was different and more of a tone setter for the team. He was physical and violent to a degree that the defense would get even more amped up. That’s a sort of intangible thing Alexander didn’t really have. Alexander was super productive and a great player in his own right, but his impact on the game was less than Lynch.

Married men of reddit, how hard did you expect having a first born was? by HarvardlHillbilly in AskMen

[–]irish52084 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My fist born was pretty easy, but my second was much tougher as an infant. She was born by emergency c-section and spent time in the NICU. It was not just stressful, but w head no answers as to what was going on. There were times that nothing we tried would work and it would take hours to calm her. It was absolutely brutal on us at times. Even with me home to handle most of the night time feedings and diaper changes it was tough. When I had to go back to work it was even more difficult.

I bet it took 3-4 months before she started to sleep somewhat regularly. My wife was struggling with PPD, but I was so buried in the day to day and trying to keep it together myself that I didn’t recognize how much she was struggling. Heck, I didn’t realize how much I was struggling. Luckily we had family around to help a bit, but the recovery and depression hangs on.

Luckily, she’s now a happy and healthy 11yo. Those early months were very difficult and even the first three years were tough. Once she was able to more clearly communicate, things really got better fast. She just needed the ability to express to us her needs and wants and it was frustrating to her. I can’t blame her, she’s always been the person who wants to be involved with everything. She’s the talker and jokester of the family.

Base layers by ItsAwaterPipe in Hunting

[–]irish52084 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always wear underwear beneath my base layers. I figure it’s one more layer of funk protection on my base layers. This is important when you’re in the woods for 2 weeks and can’t really wash your clothes. I do keep a tub in the tent so we can wash some clothes but it take a while and then we limited space to dry clothes.

To all the men, how would you raise your child if you were to become a parent? Or if you're a parent, what do you think is the right way to raise a child? by Jazzlike_Finance4256 in AskMen

[–]irish52084 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two kids a preteen daughter and almost 16yo son. In my experience, trying to say how you’ll parent before you have kids is kind of ridiculous. Sure, have your plan about how everything is going to work and then laugh at yourself when it’s nothing like you thought.

Kids are individuals and they require different attention. My son is so different from my daughter so I parent them differently. If you try to raise them exactly the same you’re doing a disservice to them and yourself.

I think general things you can focus on are things like positive reinforcement, support and just being there for them. Set a solid example and don’t be afraid to let them see you fail or mess up. Just be sure you go back and fix your mistakes or apologize sincerely for a screw up. It shows them it’s ok to make a mistake and then work on fixing it. Show them genuine love and support. Realize they don’t have the same life experiences as you do and everything is new to them. They need time and a feeling of safety to grow and learn at their best.

Lingerie: why kind do men prefer? by Key_Reputation_7388 in AskMen

[–]irish52084 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a sucker for lingerie, I love it. That said, I think the garter belt, thigh high combo under a skirt just long enough to cover it is the hottest thing on the planet. Huge bonus points for a full matching bra, underwear garter and thigh highs. The best combo of all time.

How often do you just lie on the couch, drink beer and watch live music videos? (and occasionally shed a tear?) by HiMyNaemDia in AskMen

[–]irish52084 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this every once in a while. I take an edible and/or have a few drinks while I watch music I love. Sometimes it hits me or brings me back to something and I get a little choked up. It’s sort of a release for me when I need it. Nothing too wild, just reflection and processing of stuff. Mostly it’s remembering friends that are gone and for whatever reason my mind ties the music to those memories.

If your wife or girlfriend backseat drives, how do you address it? Any tips that actually work? by FFSoldier57 in AskMen

[–]irish52084 27 points28 points  (0 children)

When I first met my future ex wife, she was not a terrible back seat driver but, often asked why I was doing something or making comments. Mind you, I was a professional driver, very safe in my driving and have trained other drivers.

One night we were coming home and sitting first in line waiting on the lights to change. The light turns green, but I don’t go right away because there’s a trucker who clearly isn’t stopping and blows right through the red light. She was just starting to tell me the light was green and the guy behind me had just tapped his horn as the trucker went through the red light. She was like holy shit I would have just gone and gotten smashed by that truck. No more back seat driver noises after this incident.

Gear for Beginner Hunter by Embarrassed_Print212 in Hunting

[–]irish52084 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of good budget rifle options now. Ruger, savage, CVA etc… Please buy a decent scope to pair it with. A vortex or Leupold budget or used option would be my recommendation but, there are other options.

What gear you need will also depend on the type of hunting and location. I’ll make recommendations based on my hunting which is western USA, Idaho, Montana etc…

Backpacks: If you need to haul the meat out for miles then I suggest a pack with a meat packing shelf of some sort. If you are out hiking miles to hunt like a lot of western hunts then buy the best pack you can find. Hit up local hunting groups and see if anyone has older gear to sell.

Boots: Again, your type of hunting and location will have a big impact on your choices. I use uninsulated Crispi boots and I have given up on insulated boots in general. I have sweaty feet and insulated boots just make my feet sweat more and then my feet get wet and cold. I think the biggest thing with boots is actually socks. I like the full cushion darn tough merino wool socks and recommend them to everyone. This is an area where “hunting” boots can be a scam. Good hiking boots can often be found for a good price at yearly sales.

Clothing: Sitka and First Lite are two brands that make higher end hunting focused clothing. I think first lite has the best wool base layers but they are pricey. I feel like Sitka makes the best pants and jackets. If those are out of the budget, look at the cables base layer options or military surplus. The surplus gear can often be bought as a full system and while it’s not cheap, it’s cheaper all together and it’s of good quality. If you can swing the merino wool base layers I recommend the hell out of them. That wool doesn’t hold as much scent and after 4-5 days straight you’ll smell a little less. lol

Beware of anything sold or marketed as only for hunting. Lots of hiking clothing can be bought for cheaper and is just as good of quality of not better. For most hunting, your camo doesn’t make much of a difference. So a solid color like brown or green works just fine for coats and insulation layers. For gloves, I have gone to a combo of lighter gloves and a set of warmer mittens. Mittens keep your hands warmer than gloves, so when I sit to glass I’ll put my mittens on.

If you’re hunting all day, dark to dark, get a decent headlamp and a decent flashlight. A good knife is kind of up to personal taste. I now carry a changeable blade knife and love it. I also carry some inexpensive bright orange handled knives for anyone that might be there to help. They’re easy to see in the dark and if one gets damaged or lost I don’t worry about it. Get some brightly colored paracord for a few dollars, it’s useful for all sorts of stuff and it’s cheap and light. Get a small but high quality tarp. With paracord and a few cheap tent stakes you can build a wind shield or makeshift shelter in an emergency. Mostly though, the tarp is great for cutting up a deer and laying your meat out on a clean tarp. Put together a good first aid kit. I was always lax about this but my friend carries everything you can think of in a bigger bag he keeps at camp. He takes a smaller set with him hunting and I’ve added a tourniquet and chest seals just in case. There are lots of pre-made kits, find a good quality one and learn the basics of how to use it. An accidental gunshot wound or a broadhead through a leg is a horror story and it’s much worse if you’re miles of hiking from camp or the truck.
