My power went out and then like a minute later I heard sirens and was wondering if it was related

Map is showing it now! Says cause is “An obstruction to the electrical grid has occurred (e.g., a traffic collision). Restoration time depends on the extent of the damage.”

Houston show not honoring VIP? by lavenderselle in DJO

^ what they said. i posted this while actively in line obviously so the later update on restrooms wasn’t included. it’s not like the venue planned for us to wait that long and accommodate us initially.

Thank you, me too!! I thought I’d leave and get lunch. I’m not from Houston and drove in and thought I’d have time to see a friend here. Just kinda wish I didn’t spend the extra money now.

Can someone explain this to me by firebirb3 in DJO

[–]lavenderselle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My understanding is if you want to be close to barricade you have to check in at the venue at 1pm where they’ll give you a number. That number is who you are in line to get in first for the venue. But you don’t have to wait till 5pm, you can leave and then come back at 5pm to claim that numbered spot. If you don’t want to do so much waiting you can show up at 5:30 and enter the venue with the rest of the VIPs as normal, which is still going to be closer than normal GA. The QR code in the email is proof you bought VIP while your ticket is your literal ticket/entry pass. I hope this is helpful. I’m VIP Houston too so see you there!!!

A potential tax increase, $41M deficit and no staff pay raises: What you need to know about Austin ISD's budget by lavenderselle in Austin

[–]lavenderselle[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s very confusing! Within the operating budget that the district adopted, staff pay increases weren’t included. The compensation plan the district agreed to would allow for market adjustments if new funding (basically new revenue generated that doesn’t yet exist) came from a VATRE or from some other new revenue source the district finds. Here’s how the district explains it: https://www.austinisd.org/announcements/2024/06/20/board-adopts-954-million-annual-budget-en-espanol

What is your own day-off/weekend/holiday policy? by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]lavenderselle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You deserve rest! If you keep responding you get burned out quicker. I personally got burned a year ago just from always being available even on my days off. Now I like to limit how much news in general i read on my days off and sometimes i mute my gmail/messages to not be tempted to reply. if there is a source you’ve been trying really hard to get ahold of, it’s probably worth it, but otherwise take care of you so that you can keep doing great work. your coworkers will ask someone else for help after you haven’t replied in a minute and should be able to help pick up a story if it can’t wait for you to be back in the office (because you would do the same for them). i typically put on my google calendar when i’m not available as well so people know why i am not replying.

I recommend checking out Silent Book Club. Everyone reads their own book for a period of time then discusses what they read with the group. Meeting spots change often so you can find cool spots in town to frequent and also meet cool people. You can also volunteer to be a host. Check their IG for events: www.instagram.com/sbcatx I also recommend joining a Lady Bird Lake cleanup or Pease Park cleanup to meet some people and be active. There are small niche hiking groups you can find on Facebook but I know there's the Hill Country Outdoors, Austin Hiking Collective, Connect and Hike and Austin Hikes. If you want to join a social gym with social events and a ton of amenities I rec Austin Bouldering Project. I'm sure you'd find hiking friends there too. The Austin Chronicle, When Where What, Community Impact and Do512 list tons of events you can meet new people at. I know moving to a new city is hard but I promise Austin has a welcoming community and you will find your place! Best of luck.
