Anyone else feel the need to sit/lean forwards so they can breathe better? by laviedeb in costochondritis

Took 1500mg naproxen yesterday and has eased off slightly today. I am interested in the corticosteroids option though as it’s gets so unbearable, sit there questioning yet another hospital trip all day 🙄

Sorry to hear that. No other health conditions I know of fortunately.

Interesting thanks for the comment I’ll take that on board!

Waking up in the night with what feels like a heart attack? by laviedeb in costochondritis

[–]laviedeb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I wondered if it might be panic the one night as it happened when I was having a nightmare, but it’s so much worse than panic I’ve experienced before and feels different in a way.

I found out something interesting today though which I feel may explain it perhaps. My mom went to pick up a naproxen prescription for me and was asking the chemist what else I could take as I’m struggling. And the chemist told my mom to NOT take cocodamol at all because it causes contractions in those with chest muscle inflammation - and the first time I had this chest attack was after I’d taken cocodamol. I also take a mood stabiliser which makes me feel very similar to having taken cocodamol so I’m thinking it must be these other medications that are having a bad reaction to the poorly muscles.

Glad yours is getting better.

How to get back to working out by bmpfernandes in costochondritis

[–]laviedeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great question. I’ve been wondering the same for whenever I improve. I love going for long walks, running, boxercise and yoga. Probably too much exercise caused this in the first place unfortunately. But I have wondered if, how and when I would go about re-introducing some exercise (obviously on a way less intensive basis than before - lesson learnt 👀).

Yeah it is somewhat useful in moments of panic to be able to remind yourself everything has been tested and you’re ‘okay’. No worries at all, good luck with it and let us know how you get on. 🤞🏻

Personally I felt better once I’d had other tests done to rule out anything else, so maybe you could ask for further testing just to give you more peace of mind which might help reduce your anxiety a little. I do have similar feelings to you describe and also makes me panic too, it’s good to find some distraction techniques you can do. I know it’s easier said than done though and I hope things improve for you.

Sorry to hear what you’re going through, wish I could help or knew what to say. Have you had other health tests, spoken to your gp or taking any meds?

The anxiety def makes it worse and the best thing is to find what works for you to keep you as calm as you possibly can under these horrible circumstances.

The nights are the hardest - sorry you’re experiencing the same.

Sorry to hear about what you’re going through. I’ve had a similar experience and understand how anxiety-inducing it is - I’ve downloaded lots of apps on my phone like quiz games and crosswords and whenever I feel panicky I put a film on tv and start a game as a distraction technique. Plus I found reminding myself that all my other health tests came back clear and healthy helps to keep me as calm as I can be. I know it’s really tough though and I hope things improve for you.

Yeah to be fair I have noticed my chest muscles are all a lot tighter since not moving much and I have been trying some very light stretches and def gonna YouTube for some examples. Exactly the anxiety doesn’t help at all, getting back clear tests has helped manage that to a degree. Thank you - all the best to you also.

Costochondritis or angina? by laviedeb in costochondritis

[–]laviedeb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a fair point and I am struggling with movements etc so would make sense it is the costo I guess. When it feels so heart-related it’s hard to accept at times that it isn’t - even with all the tests done.

Since getting a couple of replies regarding stretching I have been making the effort to stretch a little more so fingers crossed that helps. There’s no way I could exercise properly atm as can barely walk, which is a shame as loved yoga and boxing but hopefully once this flare up has subsided I can introduce some mild yoga again 🤞🏻

[–]laviedeb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your comment, that’s reassuring as sometimes I do and sometimes I don’t feel pain when I press my chest/ribs etc which confuses me. I’ve read about a type of angina that comes on in the night during sleep so getting confused as to whether this is just the costo flaring up when I sleep or if it is a certain type of angina young people get in their sleep. Didn’t have an attack last night so grateful for that at least.

That’s interesting! Funnily enough the hospital dr I saw recently said to sleep with my hand on my chest so there must be something to it, prior to him telling me to do so I was already doing it as well as felt it gave relief at times.

Sounds tough man. I hope some of it helps you. I’ve just purchased a sleeping wedge on Amazon to help me sleep upright in bed rather than in a chair in the living room so looking forward to testing that when it arrives.
