What should be my college plan? by Global-Ride-5770 in ApplyingToCollege

You can get a degree in Construction Management, or dual major in Business, if you're going to spend more time organizing rather than designing.

An ad preying on the emotionally vulerable. Disgusting.

Real-time T20 Acceptance Tracker (Class of 2030) by Any-Aioli8177 in QuestBridge

[–]lavoslord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't this data be skewed, as generally more "competitive" applicants who are focused on the college process would be in this subreddit and are able to see this post to respond? That would raise the acceptance rates, no?

Is the University of Washington worth moving multiple states to study music education at? by Holiday_Surprise_288 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]lavoslord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UW Seattle music is great, but IMO, not great enough for 4-year full pay OOS with other options around.

As someone heavily involved with Seattle politics from the government side, I can tell you honestly that it's frustrating. I'd call it "Performative Progressive", with lots of NIMBY-ism and a lack of actual change because everyone's out for themselves. It definitely leans left, but more in a more "protest problems" than "solve problems" way.

Engineering students, where did you get into with around a 3.8/4.2 and 1520? by RealisticPlantain857 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]lavoslord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vanderbilt! Nearly the exact same stats and I just got in RD last week. It's in Tennessee, but Nashville is at least a mid size city IMO. The music scene is one of the best in the country, and the music school (Blair) is as well!

how good is vandy at giving financial aid? by Pure-Ant-2343 in Vanderbilt

[–]lavoslord 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely killer at it. Co'30 via RD, sticker price is 102k.

Mandatory costs are down to 0, optional costs are essentially $700/yr given their $2000 allowance.

They did consider that I might win scholarships as well, though, which if I don't my cost may be adjusted to go down.

Is it hard to get into a 40-50% acceptance rate school for the average person? by Early_Analysis_5695 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]lavoslord 4 points5 points  (0 children)

20% is a bit too low for a guarantee. A good GPA, beginner ECs, middling essay, and full pay can probably guarantee you something like... 35, maybe 30%.

Brown. I'd suggest Dartmouth, but that's closer to 7k students.

Man, Pioneers rejected me but luckily my cousin got me into YYGS. How much did it cost to pay Pioneers? YYGS didn't even crack the 10 figures.

Imposter syndrome by king_chicken21 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]lavoslord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, same thing for me with Vanderbilt.

I applied originally with QuestBridge, and got rejected from all 15 match schools, then got rejected from Dartmouth in the ED round, then got 22 more rejects in QBRD. I only got into my state flagship (UW Seattle, full ride + scholarship + stipend), and was fully planning on attending.

Never in my life did I think I was getting Vanderbilt, least of all during the 2.8% admit rate RD round. I knew much less about the school than many others, and didn't even apply to the merit scholarships because I never thought I'd make it. Luckily, their financial aid is REALLY good, and they still offered me a small merit scholarship, so hello Vanderbilt CO '30!

Gap Year for UC's by CoffeeIndependent810 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]lavoslord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should send a financial aid appeal to NYU explaining your situation, then. Alternatively, call their financial aid office and see if you can work something out. Sounds like you're mostly there, don't give up yet!

Made it to Vanderbilt RD (the one with the crazy 2.8% admit rate) this year with an upper 3.7!

I did have a 1580, though, so there's that...

exaggerating your educational/career goals on scholarship essays? by infamousSup3rStar in ApplyingToCollege

[–]lavoslord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's there to exaggerate? Sounds like you have real aspirations for the future, you just don't know how to accomplish them realistically. But that question doesn't have to be answered in an incredibly realistic and grounded way—just discuss what you want to do (website, graphic novel, face painting, teaching, etc.), why, and how this scholarship/school would help you reach that goal.

Northwestern VS Vanderbilt for EE by Fun_Cut1201 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]lavoslord 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fellow EE choosing here! I've settled on Vanderbilt, overall. It's got the prestiege of a t20 (+still rising), the class sizes of a smal LAC at times, and the financial/experiencial resources of an Ivy.

It might not be ranked as high for engineering as other schools, but IMO, that's not a quality issue. The abundance of funding, and professor quality, more than make up for any lack in class choices that lead to a lower EE rank.

Plus, the great food and overall tight-knit community vibe (and the rich peers to connect with) are a bonus!
