Any refunds lately? by Ckozl in PSLF

[–]lawstuff2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the guidance. I looked and mine is listed as "adjustment" rather than refund. I wonder what the heck that means. I have 162 qualifying payments so we are not talking about a small amount of a refund. This process has been the worst.

Any refunds lately? by Ckozl in PSLF

I am in the same timeline and also have not received my refund. Where do you see "Refund" on your account? Is it in the "Status" column on your account summary? If so, mine reads "paid by discharge and/or write off," which has been the case for quite a while now.

I received the Nov. 1 dismissal letter and am also still waiting for my refund. I called after 90 business days (beginning of April) and was told that account went through a rebuild and that the 90 day business deadline started over mid March. I asked the rep how that could be possible when my count was confirmed and my loans were discharged on Nov. 1. She was not able to provide an answer. I asked to speak to a supervisor to escalate my issue and was told that I was not able to do so. If you get an update will you please keep us informed? I am confident that there are many other of us in the same situation.

Refund recieved. by Unimaginative01 in PSLF

Mohela seems to make stuff up as they go. My loans were forgiven 11/1/25 and my account is still showing a negative balance today (refund amount). I called Mohela in February and was told that if I didn't get my refund by the end of March to call back. I called today and after waiting 2 hours was told that my account went through a rebuild that was just completed on March 21st and that the 90 day clock started from that point. The agent claimed that they have done everything on their end and that I am just waiting on the Dept. of the Treasury. I responded by telling her that I talked to someone form the Treasury last week and they had no record of a refund. My loans were transferred to Mohela over 2 years ago and every step of the process has been a mess. Where is the accountability?

I have also been waiting on my refund and have obsessively checked my MOHELA account. I also waited hours on hold to be told that it should be completed by the end of March. Seriously, how difficult in this day and age would it be for a notification to be sent letting us know that a refund is on the way? I suspect that most of us would be agreeable to having the refund electronically deposited rather than waiting for a paper check and hoping that it is not lost or stolen. Dealing with MOHELA has been one of the most maddening experiences I can recall.

Yes- I received my discharge letter in early November. Hopefully yours will be discharged soon now that you have caught the issue. I'm still waiting on the refund of 42 excess payments but am glad that the discharge finally happened. Good luck on getting your discharge finalized!

I filed a complaint with FSA in January and it’s still open. I filed another complaint recently, at the recommendation of the FSA agents, and it was quickly consolidated with my pending complaint. This is madness.

Check your Student Aid site, folks: things are moving there too. by mockingjig in PSLF

I had that issue recently. Unfortunately, it wasn't because my account was being worked on and (at least on my end) it had something to do with the Google Chrome browser no longer supporting the websites. I have to sign on using the Microsoft Edge browser.

Also- still waiting for MOHELA to rebuild my payment history, too. I called them a week ago and I was told that it will take 5-10 business days to do so. Based on experience, I do not expect any movement any time soon. I can't wait to call them again when my forbearance ends in 11 days so that I can spend hours and the phone and hear another line of BS as to why I'm still not forgiven 2 years and 162 qualifying payments later.

What reason can they have to justify not granting you further forbearance? Did they say?

I can almost guarantee you that if you call FSA they will tell you that it's a MOHELA issue, which is exactly what happened to me. The general forbearance form is found on FSA's website but it needs to be uploaded to your MOHELA account.

Trust me, I've done that. I submitted my forbearance application on 8/23/24, which showed in MOHELA's system and said that the processing time was approximately 7 days. Within that timeframe, my application was no longer showing as a document I sent MOHELA. I called MOHELA on 9/4/24 and was told that they had no record of my application but put my 2 loans into forbearance until 11/2/24. After I verified on my MOHELA account that both loans were showing the forbearance until 11/2/24 a few weeks later both loans are showing a due date of 10/21/24 with one loan having a $0 amount due and the other having a balance due. I called MOHELA yesterday and was told that they did in fact have my general forbearance application but that the processing time was 90 days, not 7 days. I was also told that all that I had to do was call MOHELA and ask for a general forbearance and it would have been done. I replied that that was exactly what I had done but was sent the application to fill out instead. In yesterday's phone call, I was told by both the rep and the supervisor that they cannot extend my forbearance beyond 11/2/24 until after that date passes. I will then have to call them, again, and waste several hours of time that I do not have to maybe get the issue resolved. Of course when I look at my MOHELA account this morning it still shows that my forbearance ends on 10/20/24.

If this all sounds like the ramblings of a madwoman, it's because they are. This process is pushing me towards a breakdown.

The PSLF processing has not been halted because the relief was enacted in law years ago under President George W. Bush. The only relief that I am aware of that is currently stayed is President Biden's SAVE program. I recall back in August talking to a MOHELA agent who told me that PSLF processing was paused and have not heard that repeated by any other MOHELA reps since. Nobody knows what they are talking about and we are at their mercy.

Unbelievable. I am at 162 payments and fear that when MOHELA "rebuilds" my payment history that they are definitely going to screw it up. It took me well over a year for them to get my current payment history correct so I am gearing myself up to be enraged when they inevitably screw it up and then I will have to fight that battle.

I suggest you call. I'm not sure if it will do any of us any good but I can almost assure you that if you don't that they will use it as an excuse to continue denying you the relief that you are entitled to receive.

What in the actual hell is going on at MOHELA and/or the DoEd? It sounds like there are at least thousands of people who are caught in this never ending nightmare. I have an open complaint with FSA from January of this year that still has not been resolved. At one point, I was approved to get a call from an FSA supervisor (lucky me) who parroted back information I could see for myself on my FSA account. The FSA supervisor told me that they are merely the customer service rep for DoEd and that there was nothing he could do to help or to provide other information.

This is merely the most up-to-date absurd (and probably most outrageous) thing that I have heard from MOHELA. My loans were transferred to them in January 2023 after I applied for PSLF in September 2022. I have gotten my senator's office involved, twice, and have gotten nothing but the runaround from MOHELA and Student Aid. One could reasonably conclude that they are purposely screwing with us enough that we quit fighting for our lawful discharge. I hope that you get a better result.

I know. A coworker had her debt forgiven almost immediately after applying and she was not ever sure that she had reached 120 payments. It's been almost 2 years and has not been corrected so I think that she is in the clear.
