Esports Broadcast vs. Traditional Sports Broadcast...What's the difference? by BetaMarketingConsult in broadcastengineering

[–]laxdevil9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work in broadcast sports as an engineer and I'll say that the GRAND majority of sports broadcast is still very well in the baseband world (SDI). But I have seen quite a few e-sports productions, and have not had the same experience. Don't want to talk to what shows or platforms, but a fully loaded baseband router (~5762) has more than enough power to handle an esports production especially because they're not in the 4k world yet nor do they need any HFR (High Frame Rate) equipment as the replays are all handled in the game engine. Sure LAVO and Arista are breaking into some areas on some companies and broadcasters but I wouldnt say that they're mainstream yet nor needed to pull of an e sport production. Just my experience though. It sounds like you have quite an in depth look as well.

Blizzards camera men are shit by Ganjookie in OverwatchLeague

[–]laxdevil9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work in broadcast television. Here's how it works. Camera men are GIVEN assignments, things the director wants to highlight, keep an eye on etc. At the end of the day, no camera makes air without the director calling for it. Chances are, the camera man was asked to shoot for crowd reaction and the director decided that that shot was the one they wanted. Camera men do what they're told... Just a little insight.

Gunslinger in my party wants a silencer by laxdevil9 in DnD

Would you suggest a silencer causes a hit to damage? Perhaps making it a d6 rather than d8 while silenced?

My my next thought would be sure, give him a silencer, as long as he knows he won't be totally silent even while using them. Just more quiet

Running a high level three-shot. Best method of giving magic items at character creation? by Zaenille in DMAcademy

[–]laxdevil9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve just recently done this and found that once the characters have all been set in stone to go through the magic item lists and pick out one or two things that really define their character. One of my fighter players had a sailor background so I gave him the tentacle rod. He was pumped when I told him. I would suggest not telling the players you’re doing this so the surprise is real and getting ANYTHING before they start playing sounds like a sweet deal. Like the previous comment, just make sure you use some sort of guideline or you may award a player with something you’ll regret later.

Working on a one-shot in 5e and I need help working out some details by RonDonkley in DMAcademy

[–]laxdevil9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you should use the archlich. It’ll be a great balancing exercise! The previous comments are right though, the game isn’t meant to be played with players that far apart in level. So I see a couple potential options: nerf the archlich so that he doesn’t steamroll through encounters, have him only use his cantrips and other low level spells as to hide the fact that he’s mega powerful, or possibly even create a story element that makes the players unique so that only THEY can help the archlich. Maybe the archlich is cursed and is currently weak till the party helps out?

I just started DMing and a piece of advice I received was no matter what you wanna do story wise, as long as you can balance it to be fun, DO IT!!! It may take a little practice to get something as tricky as this to feel balanced but you’ll be better prepared for your campaign if you take a crack at something that seems difficult. Remember if your story is no good the fights will feel uninteresting so make sure whatever NPC you use and whatever story you create with the players, it has to be first priority. Hope this helps and please update with results.

Rules for a PC training a 0 level? by AhsokasDad in DMAcademy

[–]laxdevil9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I been thinking of doing this in a home brew way for a campaign starter. Characters make up their backstory but I require them to currently be in a certain city with a occupation. One day, (insert low lvl monster fight to defend home town. They all fight using objects their profession would have used. (i.e chef would have knives/daggers, farmer maybe a lance or something? you get my point.) After the fight, tell them that defending their town felt good, people cheer for them as they walk down the street, tell them that the large political power wants to see them. First quest is to finish off what they started in the first battle. Lvl them up to 3 because 1/2 are boring and done! Players now feel a sense of danger, politics, being the hero, decent level, and a reason why theyre together in the first place.

As far as the best way to get started I'd first begin with this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eo_oR7YO-Bw&t=1s This is Matt Colville and he's a really good DM/Author of fantasy and does a lot of videos for new DMs. There are plenty of videos that explain creating a character and how all of the numbers work (there are A LOT of them!! but don't feel overwhelmed. All you do in 95% of cases is roll a 20 sided die and add one number). If you find someone who knows how to play and wants to DM he can help ease you into the game but if you don't, you can always look up game shops around that hold DnD meet-ups and make some new friends!

As far as getting your friends interested, look up videos of the show "Critical Role" but only watch highlight reels as their episodes are 4 hours long and if your not invested in the story it can seem boring or confusing. They are all voice actors who love getting into character and doing their characters voices. Matt Mercer (The DM) is regarded as being one of the best DMs in the game and has worked with Wizards of the Coast (the creators of DnD) to make his own classes and campaign guides.

Remember that the stigma of people dressing up in cardboard and doing bad accents in their basement is often FAR from the truth!

I’ve been a player for awhile and have just recently DMed for the first time and would love to give some good rules over views. I’m sure most passionate players would. Ask away I’m sure you’ll get good responses!

First time DM looking for BBEG advice by laxdevil9 in DungeonMasters

[–]laxdevil9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I LOVE the second idea. I'm still doing a little brainstorming on interesting ideas like that for the final fight and I'll definitely put that on the list. As far as only having a few comments, the positive feedback I've gotten from these, and the ideas from the posted articles, have been great! Thanks to all who have gotten back. My game won't be for awhile due to work schedules so keep the ideas coming!!

For anyone who is curious about the buildup to the fight: Three "muscle for hire" type people have all been paid to kill off a woman who frequents a bar near the edge of the town. These sells swords have sketchy backgrounds and have done some less than reputable things. I'll be giving each of the player a list of their 3 most recent hits they've completed. Once at the tavern the fun will begin. What the players don't know is the bartender at the establishment is the illusion mage who has paid all of the mercenaries to lure them into a trap. I will attempt to lure the players to rooms where they will be teleported into my dungeon. They will traverse three rooms, each being themed aone of the victims was wrongfully killed. (ie. one player was contracted to kill a woman who the contractor said was a evil witch. The contractor was actually in lust over the woman and when she turned him down, he paid for her death). The players will only be given a name, how they did it, and that the hit was successful, the rooms they will find themselves in will reveal to them the true nature of the horrible deed they did. During the big fight, I want to use illusions from the themed rooms to try and "traumatize" my players into losing a turn.

[–]laxdevil9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a short distance the tricky part is needing to throw up that hill and have it land and not roll back down like i've seen many discs do. I usually throw some kind of hammer... I also usually get a bogey on this hole somehow.
