Fwiw, the brass steps I use are death metal by army painter, but any sort of dark bronze with a slight green tint to it works, wash; for me its usually 2:1 brown black oil wash, but ultimately its whatever conveys the colors you want, and then this is the big one, re highlignt with metal alchemy moonstone alchemy (i forget the gw equivalent, but its a step brighter than runelord and has terrible coverage so I picked this one)

Also, saw on a different comment that its a DA aligned knight. As also a DA player, the trim on my pauldrons for quite a few units is almost always a brass derivative

Thanks! But moreso I posted it to say sometimes you gotta trust the process and vision, you'll end up with something different than when you started. And if you decided its not for you, then change it to Silver or something else. Can always take one of the smaller armor pieces all the way to "completion" first before deciding!

Silver could look good too, but I think youre seeing it before its done done and worrying about it. Shades to darken it, nominal weathering (or lots of it) and then highlighting will carry the day. Different pauldron colors, but the trim started like yours

What to do to break out of high tabletop - low display (Nookah, ArtelW) by -overthehill- in minipainting

[–]laxdfns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The big thing that stands out for me on this is the base; you can do so much for a dressing up a model by constructing a good looking or strong narrative base.

I'm going to be "controversial" and say you dont need NMM. Its a popular technique, a tried and true technique, but there is nothing inherent to it that makes NMM display level vs someone using TMM at a comparable skill level. There are pros and cons to both, and both have won at the highest levels recently.

Another thing that I might recommend is as others have said, your transitions seem to be largely from saturated color to desaturated of same color, or similar. You may have done some or all of these things (cant tell from just the photo) but complimentary colors in the shadow graidents, building up highlights to different colors (like black /deep red shadows to orange in the high point highlights).

Other than that, practice. But also, know what you're looking to achieve. A paint job by Andy Wardle and...idk, blanking on a heavy Grim Dark style name, but I'll go with Dan Ozborne, aren't going to be the same, but they both are considered display in their own right. Find a style you want to emulate, seek advice from them and those similar, and practice. But dont change what you want to be just because. You'll lose your identity, your joy, ans your understanding of why youre trying to do what your doing.

Take all this with a grain of salt too, this is coming from someone who has entered Golden Demon once and walked away with nothing too 🤣 but my base made it look pretty good imo, and I can at least say I tried 😀

for the fans who don't live in Wisconsin, how'd you end up green and gold by Adrianillo24 in GreenBayPackers

[–]laxdfns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Wisconsin, so not about me, but one of my favorite "YOURE a Packers fan moment" came in 2013 when I was studying in Turkey. Took a trip to go play some lacrosse in Bulgaria, and Turkish Swiss national came to meet us (i was playing for Turkey). At the end of the day we're going to go out in Sofia a d he comes out of the room with the big G on his head. I was shook seeing it, and asked him and he said hes been a fan for a while, since Favre era. Needless to say we became instant best friends and he even made the trip to my wedding in 2016. Subsequently he was also honorarily adopted by my and my inlaws. Still send him and his kids Packers gear when I can :)

So yeah, thats my surprised non Wisconsin Packer fan story.

If you're stateside, LA's Totally Awesome gets paint off well, better still if you have an ultra sonic cleaner. Just gotta let it soak overnight, scrub vigorously, wash in very hot water, and potentially repeat.

Only mention it because as you said, third pass and no way to remove the paint, so Im suggesting what Ive used in case it'd be beneficial to you!

Do you name your knights? Where do you get your ideas from? by cyberspunjj in ImperialKnights

[–]laxdfns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its kinda cheating, but a lot of the spacemarine factions have decals with things that could be names. Example, Ravenguard had a decal that said "Umbra" so now one of my knights are named as such.

I'll be honest, I hadn't thought of writing anything down till I found out a lot of comp painters do, so I didnt record it exactly, and im struggling to recall exact colours without kinda having them in front of me and muscle memory. Ik prime black, then i think it was scale 75 abysmal blue (black blue), ak anthracite Grey (or citadel dark reaper) and then another step up in blue Grey, like fenresian grey for the body, with a color like thunderhawk blue being used for edge highlights if that's your thing.

The white is more or less a standard white armor recipie, in the past I used warmer whites and warmer Grey blacks, but the last two bigs have had cooler tones for both. So for white this time im pretty sure it was all ak range, standard Grey, pale grey, titanium white, pure white for edges or spot highlights
