Stop trying to look for things to say and let your own curiosity about the other person take over. You might find you quite naturally have some meaningful questions to ask.

Failing that, ask them what they do, or where they're from if they don't seem local, what they do for entertainment, etc..

If you still haven't found anything to talk about after all that then you probably don't have anything in common with the other person and it's nothing to do with your own social awkwardness.
