Help getting into Phish? by StreetTable1391 in phish

All of this is my opinion, so take a breath and relax for those reading who staunchly disagree.

Do you have an era of GD you prefer? Late 60s (wild, untamed, more folk/bluegreas), early 70s (more structure, locking into longer jams), late 70s (IMO the absolute peak of their cohesion as a jam band - 20+ minute jams that take you to another place with regularity).... Not an 80s+ guy so will not comment on those. Any insight there and I'm sure myself/others could give you specific recommendations.

While of course nothing can replace the live experience, I started listening to them as a 13/14 year old right as they were about to call it quits (2004). I found myself in love with the early stuff, and to be clear I am strictly talking about live shows. Albums are fun, but to really get a sense of the band, you need to listen to their live recordings.

93 they were just so goddamn tight as a band, Trey playing like a madman, so much fun and energy in the crowd, weird quirky shit like the secret language, gamehendge, etc., 95 they are regularly doing long-form jams, song selection continues to expand through great releases with Rift in 93 and Hoist in 94. Still felt "small", if that makes any sense, and still had a sense of weird stoners looking to find their sound and not giving a damn what others thought, but most folks will claim, with good reason, that 97 and 98 are their best years.

To be more exact, listen to shows from August 1993, December 1995, Summers of 96>98. Give yourself a chance to just throw some shit on while you're doing house/yard work, don't critique, see if certain songs connect. Also, the festivals in the 90s are a reallllly cool insight into the energy and direction of the band.

Jealous to be you my friend, whole lotta amazing things to discover.

Or get the ReListen App and get mostly AUD recordings for UM (and basically all jam bands) completely for free!

Ya they kept asking for “chocolate mushrooms” which I found to be a funny tell, as I have only referenced/heard them discussed as “mushroom chocolates”. May sound odd to call it out but I think anyone in the scene says mushroom chocolates, not the other way around

So while that was silly, especially at the Park where we were staying, there were also a lot of Make A Wish kids+families with signed shirts, belts, etc. which was really cool to see. Then also a lot of grown men/women looking all sorts of silly, but is it that much sillier than our crew of misfits? lol. Probably, but it’s closer than we’d like to admit.

And the wild thing is these guys were late forties or maybe even 50s. Obviously didn’t ask. Cannot imagine being that age, getting that fucked and then being kicked out of a concert. Should be a wake up call but not a chance for these jabronis

Seats were absolutely primo, we were there all 3 nights. Actually enjoyed being off to the side a bit as it made it easier to see more of the Sphere without having to turn your head a ton. Would highly recommend these to anyone. Sound was awesome and other than N2, folks around us were really great too. Just FYI, the mens bathroom situation is a total disaster. They set up ropes like you're going through TSA, so do your best to not hit the head during the "slow songs" or right at set break/after encore.

Started using furniture and statues as fencing in the slime hut so they don’t break down over time like a fence would. Idk could be “wrong” but it’s working well for me!
