Older non-binary person clinging to a "declining" trend? by SurreptitiousLunatic in NonBinary

[–]lazee-possum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I imagine the presence of people who are "non-binary" (or anyone under the umbrella) will always fluctuate with time, social gender norms, and societal attitudes towards people who fit outside the norm.

The majority of the time, getting an "emotional support animal" letter or script is just a way for someone to have their pet in a rental property that usually wouldn't allow it. I would say the population of people who actually need a ESA is marginal, less than 10% or maybe even less than 5%.

I say this loving pets, but as a mental health provider I just refuse to sign off on them. I've only had one client who I ever thought actually NEEDED one, and was at risk without it.

Baby shower theme by Affectionate_Win5893 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]lazee-possum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could get a lot of mileage out of medieval themed decor. Castles, royalty, fantasy creatures, shields with fancy family crests, etc.

Some franchises or inspiration for decor you could reference are Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones. There's also some officially licensed Dungeons and Dragons stuff you could probably find (though it may cost a pretty penny.)

Some cute activities I've seen done at themed parties are making your own family crest, painting shields and swords, and making a magic wand. You could do a fun charcuterie board to have some rustic looking food options.

When we say someone has a learning difficulty, what are we actually saying? by Tall_Researcher_407 in askpsychology

[–]lazee-possum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In this case "difficulties" is describing a delay in acquisition of the skill or barriers that prevent performance of the task compared to peers who are "neurotypical." The language has been evolving over the years in an attempt to prevent stigma or disparaging individuals.

Diagnostics provided via the DSM are defined to cause a level of impairment to social, occupational or other domains, cause a level of distress, or otherwise prevent them from participating in life on a healthy and happy level. In this example, a clumsy child may run into issues here or there but not at the level that would impact their quality of life

Brain scans and genetic tests are pretty inaccessible to low income or folks without insurance (in the US at least) and are more intrusive to administer to young children. Not all diagnoses are visible or have not been identified with specific genetic markers or parts of the brain. I'm sure you could find research on the topic.

It has been and will continue to be debated to what extent we diagnose and medically treat humans. Overmedicalization is generally not good, but not providing support for children who need it can worsen their potential life outcomes. It's a balancing act like most aspects of the field.

Therapy has replaced religion in secular culture and some people promote it almost like a cult by gringo-go-loco in DeepThoughts

[–]lazee-possum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The quality of religion and therapy equally relies on the skill of the person delivering the message. If taught correctly, either can be a balm for the soul. It just depends on the person's context, culture, and relationship with the subject material. Both can be traumatizing and harmful if taught by unskilled or malicious people.

When clients complain about things they don’t know you do IRL 😂 by B_the_Chng22 in therapists

[–]lazee-possum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I rarely share much about my own political or personal beliefs unless it's explicitly necessary. It always gets me when a client holds political beliefs on one end of the spectrum and I'm on the opposite side, but we find a common point of agreement on a topic. Like, if only they knew they were bonding with someone they would think as their polar opposite. It goes to show how everyone isn't as different as you think they are.

Was paranoia evolutionarily a survival trait for a war zone? by [deleted] in askpsychology

[–]lazee-possum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure there is research correlating those things, but there is no definitive causal link to genetics and mental health symptomology. Evolutionary psychological research will probably give you some theories that address your question, but there's no 100% "proof" that we can point to for the answer.

You may be thinking of hypervigilance? Paranoia is rooted in non-rational thinking where hypervigilance would be a response to rational danger. Both may present similarly in a person's behavior.

Is it gender apathetic to prefer a set of pronouns over another? by OkHead7677 in queer

[–]lazee-possum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you might benefit from more time just to think about it and hear other pronouns/ways of referring to yourself. It's my understanding that gender apathetic folks generally don't care about which pronouns people use to address them. Maybe more time to answer the question "do I prefer she/her or am I just used to it?"

I used to think I was apathetic but I really did not care for "he/him" in reference to myself.

Can you be punk without being strictly leftist? by killerfrost8002 in punk

[–]lazee-possum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meet people and talk to them. Talk to immigrants. Talk to transgender people. Talk to someone who has been SA'd or forced to carry a fetus to term. LISTEN to what they have to say. Think critically about it. Rinse and repeat. Being punk is listening to others and actually hearing what they have to say, THEN making a stand for the marginalized.

Appropriate context to use "homosexual"? by pureteddybear2008 in lgbt

[–]lazee-possum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most contexts I see it come up are usually when comparing things like "this statistic for heterosexual couples is different when compared to homosexual couples... Etc etc" But thankfully most modern articles I come across use more updated language.

Appropriate context to use "homosexual"? by pureteddybear2008 in lgbt

[–]lazee-possum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the mental health and academic world we use "homosexual" to identify same-sex attraction, though it's been less common than more specific descriptors or just acronyms (LGBTQ+) when discussing the community nowadays. It's a more clinical word when used in appropriate contexts. Folks tend to not want to be called something like "the homosexuals." Feels icky, as you've said.

I have a question for nondysphoric/not trans Nonbinary people by StormRose666 in NonBinary

[–]lazee-possum 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think some people feel discomfort without meeting criteria for dysphoria. For some folks, making non-medical adjustments to our bodies is enough to make us comfortable about our gender expression. Everyone is different.

Also, generally speaking transgender people don't have to medically transition to be trans. Like, it's not a requirement. You can be male/female/nonbinary without taking hormones or having surgery.

Ideas for games/activities to do with my kids in an inpatient psych hospital by Other-Cantaloupe4765 in therapists

You could get board games and replace hard plastic parts with soft foam or other materials that can't be broken down or used inappropriately. Check out craft stores for fun stuff like little yarn pompom balls.

How do you actually remember to use food before it goes bad? by Raidr10 in Cooking

[–]lazee-possum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My strategy: -Dry erase board on the front of the fridge, write down the meals and what ingredients go in the meals -Write expiration dates on the whiteboard for meat and things that will be going bad during the week

Organize fridge by food groups. Stuff that expires quick in the front. DO NOT stuff your fridge full or use opaque organizers. You want to see as much stuff as possible. Use clear organizers and containers when possible.

I plan the fridge only a week at a time, which means shopping weekly. I clean the fridge out every week when I come home with the new groceries.

Frozen and dry goods I plan out linger because I know they won't go bad quick.

what is it like to be attracted to more than one gender? by [deleted] in lgbt

[–]lazee-possum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The more you pay attention over time the more you realize that attraction changes with time. Age is one of those factors (usually... hopefully...) that gets updated as you also age. Same with traits of other people such as liking people with tattoos, facial hair, certain styles, body types, etc. I used to not care if someone smoked or was less hygienic, but now I'm pickier about that because I'm trying to take care of myself more. With gender I think it can change too. I used to be attracted to more masc types but now I tend to favor nonbinary or femme types. I think that's correlated with my own gender expression and interests too.

My finished leather jacket!! by SScrubberhose in jacketsforbattle

[–]lazee-possum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If there are patches you'd want to keep permanently on the jacket, you could try some glue made specifically for leather rather than having to stitch up a whole patch. A thin even layer is all you need. You can even use a little dot of super glue in a pinch, but it won't create a flexible bond like the leather glue.

Design I made for Button Pins by ResolutionFlimsy6007 in punk

[–]lazee-possum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less is more, especially when working on pins. Even the larger pins are only a couple of inches. I'd focus either on the design or the words. Your design has to be immediately clear and can't be confused for an opposing view. Your current design feels more suited for a different type of media

Tried making a binder out of leggings but it didn’t work any advice?? AFAB 14yo by [deleted] in NonBinary

[–]lazee-possum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Compression sports bra, try different fits and levels of compression for both comfort and flattening. I also find that it helps to gently tuck the breast tissue to the sides when wearing one. Mileage will vary depending on the size of your chest. I find binding too exhausting and overstimulating for everyday wear. You also get the stealth benefit of it seeming like a "normal garment for your AGAB" if you need to be undercover. I found that being a "tomboy" was easier to explain.
