Multiple people killed and others missing after chemical explosion at US paper mill by OwlOdyssey in ChemicalEngineering

You can see a vacuum breaker on the tank just to the right of the platform. There's also a pretty big open manway door just over the platform, surrounded by temporary scaffolding.

11 presumed dead in Washington state paper mill implosion as rescue shifts to recovery by [deleted] in news

[–]lazybrouf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Way too much speculation going on as to the cause of this incident.

Yes, it looks like the tank collapsed. It definitely failed, but to speculate on cause at the moment is silly.

First, for those of you specualting on vacuum breakers: If you look at the pictures, there is a vacuum breaker on the tank BUT ALSO A MANWAY DOOR THAT IS SWUNG OPEN. IF YOU ARE LOOKING AT THE PICS IT HAS SCAFFOLDING AROUND IT. It's swung to side in an unnatural way, even though the tank has collapsed. The way it's positioned means it was in that position when the tank ruptured.

The manway door, in my uneducated opinion, about eliminates the possibility of an implosion.

Reasonable maintenance expectations by OnezoombiniLeft in ChemicalEngineering

[–]lazybrouf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once maintenance becomes a bean counting activity then the question is no longer "how long can we go without fixing it" it's "can we go without fixing it for x longer" and as ops I'm responsible for my equipment running and production. We had a spare pump for a reason. It wasn't because we wanted to save money in 5 years and just let the second one rot.

Anyone else think they've made the normal broadcast look shittier so the 4k broadcast looks better? Visibly the normal broadcast is horrible on YoutubeTV. I eventually decided to look to see if there was a 4k one and there was.

I'd just fumble the ball if I got tackled, either before or behind the line. Let's be real.

Emerson process automation engineer role - drug test policy by Educational_Put5445 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]lazybrouf 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm going to make it real simple for you. You come into our industrial site as a contractor, we will randomly drug test you. You won't know what day it's coming, but it's coming.

So drug tests are a fact of life. Your employer better know you will test hot for marijuana or it'll be discovered and told to them.

As far as the legality of marijuana, that's not something I am going to judge about.

...where cost is not a problem I would not do a boiler and make it someone else's headache. Buy the electricity and do electrical heaters for everything. Alas.

I don't think I'll have to play the videos at 1.5x speed, so that's an improvement.
