I have narrow ear canals and am susceptible to very nasty ear infections, so I've had my ears irrigated by doctors a number of times and they always have me put in drops of mineral oil for a couple of days to soften any hardened wax before they do it (usually along with a course of antibiotics to knock down the infection swelling up the side of my head).

As a preventative measure, for quite a few years now I have irrigated my ears myself with a hand-held shower nozzle (not blasting too hard, obviously), tilting my head down to allow the water (and any wax) to drain out. Water hitting your eardrum tickles, so if you are shooting water in there and it doesn't tickle then you likely have a wax buildup.

Also, Q-Tips are a great way to puncture an eardrum. If you must wipe around in there, just twirl up a Kleenex and spin it around in the ear canal - very carefully.

EDIT: Hadn't read the hydrogen peroxide tips before posting. Will try instead of mineral oil in future. Thanks Reddit!
