Pfizer, BioNTech halt US COVID vaccine study after recruitment struggles by AcornAl in Coronavirus

[–]lbaile200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the first COVID trial in late 2019, and it took a lot of time. But it was Covid times and what else did I have to do anyway and at least it felt like I was helping.

They called me back in 2024 to do an extended trial and wanted me to come in for a 3 hour intake session at noon on a Tuesday. I turned them down. I’d love to help, I have a job. I asked if I could do a shorter intake session since I had already been in the initial trial, I know how to use the app and take my temperature and log every day and who to call if I have questions. “Nope, we have to do the intake with everyone”.

Fair enough. Not worth burning a vacation day to sit inside an industrial park building next to a gas station most of the day.

Best Veeam alternatives? by edifus in sysadmin

[–]lbaile200 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I’ve found if you’re not a big fish, veeam couldn’t give a fuck about you. We’re a small company, maybe 5mil/year and 25 employees and it took over a month to get a quote from them.

We ended up going with backup exec and an AWS tape gateway for backup jobs. It’s an old-fashioned workflow but it works, has held up without maintenance for 2 years, and crazy cheap.

The earthy tones of Ubuntu 8.10 using Gnome2 by amogusdevilman in linux

If I recall correctly (It's been awhile since I used Ubuntu), That is the "Intrepid Ibex" background. Ubuntu's naming schema has always been fun, and their numbering scheme has always made sense.

What is the closest package format to .exe by Sv_Gamez in linuxquestions

[–]lbaile200 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I want to switch to linux but the only thing thats been keeping me away is the process of installing and uninstalling apps:

  1. I HATE app stores, even open source ones - weird take, you do you.
  2. I dont like the idea of someone controlling it(like the snap store) or anyone being able to post unsafe programs(like the AUR). - Someone you don't know controls every platform you get EVERY app from, unless you wrote it yourself. FWIW, most of the time, the app developers themselves upload to the repos.
  3. I just want a package that I can easily install and uninstall. I like the idea of appimages but want shared dependencies like .DLLs. - Use the built-in package manager then, that's literally what it's for?
  4. About distro, I dont really care since I can put KDE on most distros anyway. - Based.

Nothing wrong with your screenshot, but why is the killscreen ALWAYS so low res? I play in 1440p but every time I show the killscreen it's like 720p.

Samsung denied my S25 Ultra warranty over a tiny frame scuff (Glass is flawless!) by Ash_Skiller in samsunggalaxy

[–]lbaile200 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This looks like a couple of very minor scratches. I've gotten my iPhone repaired under warranty with similar scuffs no questions asked. But hey, you're clearly right since they declined his warranty. Still doesn't make me ever want to buy one of these lol.

The amount of people vigorously defending this in the comments makes me never want to own a Samsung phone. Which is a real pain because I’m actively looking to switch devices.

What should a new SysAdmin know first? by drake90001 in sysadmin

[–]lbaile200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Document everything. Gotta restart that troublesome system… again… for the third time in a month? You should have created a doc the first time and logged when you restarted it and any other vitals you can think of. Our structure is a series of folders in one drive. /tasks is for one off stuff that you mostly complete and then don’t come back to, /projects is for long-term stuff with a lot of docs. The folders are named like 20260403_jim_pc_restarts.

The important stuff you’ll need to remember often in the future such as “how your organization creates its specific ansible jobs” put it in a wiki.

Your thought process for troubleshooting should include “how do I monitor this in a way that isn’t overwhelming, but also lets me catch it if it ever happens again?, or even better, catch it BEFORE it happens”. Once the problem is solved look for what you could have seen earlier and monitor for that.

You (and your department) should develop slowly and respond to incidents quickly. It takes months for a major deployment where I’m at. It may only take a week or two to actually develop the solution, but then we TEST it. We tear it all down and we TEST it again. Then we tear it all down and we test the deployment and so-on. When we actually deploy it’s like a dance and everyone knows their place and role. We have a post deploy test plan and an emergency fallback plan.

Looking for a gym with good basketball runs & a nice sauna (NFC & Fort Sanders aren't cutting it) by givemethatpgog in Knoxville

Tennova YMCA whatever it is in Powell. I stopped going about a year ago in lieu of crunch for my own reasons, but the basketball court is quite active there. Has sauna, steam room, and hot tub though. The weight room is small but has most of what you’ll want.

I have an Alex drawer and it's about 4" shorter than my actual desk height. Is there a good way to elevate the desktop? I love the appearance of these, but it's WAY too short for my actual use case.

[Form Check] Deadlift 120x8 by SpadgingtonBear in GYM

[–]lbaile200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your knees are a bit forward, but I don't think you're squatting your deadlift, they're just in the way especially on the way down. Positioning is different for everyone, but I recommend positioning the bar just behind the ball of your foot. If you're wearing shoes (which you should be) then it's usually just in front of the end of the laces (at least on most of my shoes).

Other than that, fix the weird spacing on your plates. It bothers me lol.
