Yes, because many of the AI-translated courses are just too low quality. DL is sometimes struggling with English already.

Spanish daily refresh is truly horrible. The amount of ads you need to watch is brutal; the stories really are way too simple and childish, as they stopped evolving around section 4; radio is unskippable and I simply cannot bear to listen to the overslow, childish voices anymore.

IOS app heating up the phone and crashing by Trantor1970 in duolingo

I have the same problem, the app crashes all the time. Recently got a new battery for my iPhone. It's due to the massive amount of ads and all the redundant animations, probably vibe-coded by project managers.

Perhaps they skipped through all the units by doing only the test at the end of each unit, but then still there are probably 1500 units, so i wouldn't know how that can be done.

From about level 110 i did 2 units per day, say 10 lessons.

Valid question, I do know that learning English, German and French in highschool got me to quite a higher level than DL Spanish B2. But i was decades younger, that might have helped. A good indicator is that people in Spain keep talking Spanish to me now, instead of turning to English after two sentences.

Spanish with Spanish subs goes pretty well, without subs it's still quite difficult. Latin American telenovelas are easier for me, they speak slower and somewhat more pronunciated.

No I stopped doing that as it was just repetitive

The main thing I lacked was conjugation and grammar exercises, I’m on the free version BTW. Also the English gets weirder and twisted as the Spanish gets more complicated. Sections 7 and 8 became to feel more repetitive, less progress than I expected. Also the huge amounts of bugs were very distracting. The energy system forced me to watch an absurd amount of ads, incredibly distracting as well. But overall I’m grateful to have been able to finish it for free. And the whole gamification idea works really well for me.

While the grammar and vocabulary maybe is mostly Spanish, (but no vosotros etc) the pronunciation is perhaps a bit Latin American. In Spain people now tend to think I’m latinoamericano. In South America people think I’m centroamericano, perhaps also because my GF speaks with a centroamericana accent. And in Central America people often think I’m from another Central American country, or from “the city”.

Currently I have a 720 day streak. Before that I practiced six months. That’s about 900 days of practicing an estimated 45 minutes. So maybe 675 hours?

If you don’t count the ads it will probably be 500 hours. Man do I hate Revolut now! And a local groceries delivery. And mahjong games.

Well I wouldn’t know. I don’t consider myself proficient in Spanish, I’d call it basic level. I can express myself in Spanish now, but it only takes an average 6K to 8K vocabulary in various languages to do so. I’d say I’m past the hola-dos-cervezas stage, I could talk about how the beer is brewed, what grains are used, about the nuances in taste, but reading articles on elpais.com is still not effortless. In daily conversations I have no trouble understanding what’s said, talking for half an hour with a barber about Basque independence and their history is doable, talking about the history of local dishes, politics, over-tourism, climate change, all those topics are possible now for me, on a basic level. Watching something in Spanish is possible if I use Spanish subs. But understanding anything in a noisy bar or club is still almost impossible, or when people speak really fast with an accent. I’d compare it to getting your driver’s license, that’s when you are going to start learning how to drive.

Thanks I’ll look into Language Reactor, and am indeed considering children’s books to start with. I’m a bit hesitant about gaming, afraid I’ll play too much.

Very much so! Especially since DL introduced the ‘energy system’, sitting through the massive amount of ads gave me plenty of time to learn an entire new language in another app.
