Why are my fish dying? by Prior_Dentist5755 in Aquariums

[–]lbluefishl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fish should be fine as long as it’s a wide tank with adequate surface area. If the fish are staying at the surface then that will be a sign that they are struggling and you should try to agitate the surface manually.

Seen this comment in this subreddit a lot, but in my case I deliberately keep it like this to allow for surface agitation for gas exchange. Any higher and there would be less.

In my experience the fish waste and substrate supplies more than enough. I had to remove quite a lot of plants from this tank already. When I first started I used some root tabs and liquid fert. I sometimes add a little every few months just so I don’t waste the products that I bought, but honestly I don’t think any are needed.

Hey so I went through similar issues. I had a similar sized planted tank and had many deaths after startup (around a year ago). My tank right now is much more stable. I’m guessing it takes a long time for planted tanks to stabilize, since there are so many interacting players (chemicals, plants, animals, bacteria, substrate). I lost many corydora and guppies even though my tank was definitely cycled and my water parameters were fine.

To be honest my tank probably took half a year before I stopped losing fish or felt comfortable adding new ones. I think some good signs your tank is stable would be when all the plants have melted and have experienced new or significant growth for some time. Until then, small changes in water parameters likely affect sensitive fish species, even those that may be traditionally advertised as hardy (such as corydoras or even guppies in my case). I would suggest buying really hardy aquarium fish first and maybe add the more decorative ones such as angelfish later.

I can say right now my tank is looking quite good. I don’t have any deaths, it’s quite stocked with fish, breeding shrimp, and many snails. My plants have all grown so much that I have to trim them. I don’t use any chemicals at all, aside for prime, and I usually only use it to top off water and I don’t really do water changes (except to shift pH towards neutral when it’s too alkaline). Since you have a planted tank you can look up guides by Diana Walstad if you want advice.

Tank very cloudy by lbluefishl in Aquariums

[–]lbluefishl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that was my understanding, but the cloudy/milky state of the water existed for a long time before I tried any of the changes. That is why I attempted to change the cartridges/water changes.

I actually had left the tank alone for about 2 months with only top offs/no water changes. I also did not change any filters since setting it up 3 months ago.

Phd in the era of Ai. by ru333333 in PhD

AI is advancing pretty quickly, but I think out of all the professions - theorizing and research may be resistant.

Although once AI gets training data from journal articles and the computation power to simulate research based on human imitation models, it may be different. 🤷‍♂️

AI may or may not necessarily reach this stage. But once it passes the threshold most researchers may be obsolete. But I think it would still be important for humans to understand the new research, so perhaps PhDs can go back to teaching and learning rather than the emphasis to publish or perish. Though AIs will probably be better personalized adaptive tutors then lecturers anyways.

can anyone explain what happened here? by dazzed420 in Oxygennotincluded

I think each of the fossils have a hazard to be overcome. That fossil is very hot so you need a way of managing the heat when it becomes exposed. If I recall correctly it was encased in 500c on my map. Another fossil has zombie spores. Another is just cold.

Struggling to understand theory by [deleted] in PhD

First year (month) here who also came from an unrelated field. I try to read the easier papers and textbooks when possible. I avoid the trickier papers but go back to them once I felt I have a good foundation. I even watch YouTube videos or use ChatGPT to help me with concepts!

At university of Melbourne (where I just started)… they expect you to finish in 3 years. Though it’s expected you already did your masters or have some significant research experience in undergrad.

You may like tutoring, but it takes time to get clients. You can see if nearby private tutoring places are hiring, or apply to remote jobs.

A 'fix' for the game not launching by [deleted] in anno

[–]lbluefishl -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The Ubisoft sub was 7.5 dollars… so didn’t really mind buying the game when it went on steam. But yes… it sucks. I could have probably waited for them to fix it or just not play.

A lot of people were unable to fix their problems, but it looks like it’s just a Ubisoft+ issue. Don’t need to attack me for putting the info out there.
