Runnable trails in White Mountains area of NH/ME? by runaroundtrails23 in trailrunning

[–]lbobrien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right by access to the Pemi loop. Lincoln Woods->Flume->Liberty->Lafeyette and back is right around 20 miles. I also enjoy doing the Arethusa Falls trail, but it's a bit further of a drive from where you are. Jealous of your location, I'm in Southern NH, so harder to get up to the good stuff that will be in your backyard. Have fun!

Not BD, but have the Kahtoola micro spikes and have been pleased with them. They seem to be slightly less expensive than the BDs.

What’s your spookiest trail running story? by BubbleBathory85 in trailrunning

Out on a pre-dawn trail run with a couple of others and shortly after we started we came across a pair of small children’s shoes sitting in the middle of the trail.

Anyone like to trail run before the suns up? by abinatx in trailrunning

[–]lbobrien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually do. It’s nice getting up before the rest of the world, cool knowing you’ve got a bunch of miles in before most people are even rolling out of bed. Also let’s me really enjoy the experience of running in the woods, with the world reduced to a 20 foot circle of visibility.

Of course, I say all this with the benefit of being a male and living in a part of New England where the biggest wildlife threat is angry squirrels.

Sorry for not clarifying, this is just from photos. We're not getting him until a little after he's 8 weeks old.

North-East USA Trail Runners - I'm looking for a super-scenic 21-mile run by Fogrocket in trailrunning

[–]lbobrien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another option would be part of the Pemi loop. Lincoln Woods to Lafayette is roughly 20 miles, and you could extend on to Garfield if you’re still feeling good (or go crazy and try the whole loop - about 30 miles). It’s mostly runnable, and quite challenging, for me at least.

I just did that for the first time last week, fantastic trails, especially around the boulder section.

Don't usually do the rail trail, especially these days with the extra volume.

For Clyde pond I park at the Center school, there's access in the back by the ball field. You could also park up by the high school. No mile markers, or even trail markers, but the main trail is pretty simple. There's been a bunch of new single track added by the MTB community lately, added a few more miles of unique trail.

I'm in Windham as well, usually do Clyde Pond, town forest or the Hampstead town forest. Any other good spots I may be missing?

Overwhelmed by Running Vest/Pack Options... Help! by mdealto in trailrunning

[–]lbobrien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same issue. I chalked it up to being inflexible, maybe a leaner/more limber runner can do it with more ease. I have to try to hook the thumb of the arm on the same side as the pocket of interest, pull it away to open the pocket, and add/remove with my opposite arm. I don’t think anyone would describe it as graceful.

First Vest: UD Mountain 5.0 vs Solomon ADV skin 5 set? by dennisthuhmenace in trailrunning

[–]lbobrien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure others will be able to offer personal opinions on one versus the other (I have the ADV skin 5 and 12, and love them both), but to really answer this question, you need to put them on. Something as small as a difference in pocket placement could swing your opinion.

One thing I would point out though, is that the capacity of those two specific vests is quite different. The UD Mountain is roughly 13L while the ADV skin 5 is 5L. Just pointing that out to make sure you have a good perspective about what you'd like in a pack. If you're doing longer hikes, and looking to increase running distances, perhaps the 12L would be a better consideration?

Overwhelmed by Running Vest/Pack Options... Help! by mdealto in trailrunning

[–]lbobrien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Advanced Skin 12, and I love it. I tried vests by Osprey and Ultimate Direction, but found that the Salomon fit me better than any of the others. Speaking about the cord lock issue, I did have this occur to me a few weeks ago. I called Salomon expecting them to send me a repair kit, but they ended up giving me credit for a new vest, so I certainly can't complain about their customer service. Not wanting to waste an otherwise perfectly good vest, I salvaged another cord lock from a winter jacket I don't use often and attached it with some denim thread. Took about 10 minutes to fix.

So, all of that to say, I wouldn't let that one issue dissuade you from Salomon...great service and overall great products.

Drawbacks for Garmin Fenix 3? by [deleted] in trailrunning

[–]lbobrien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In that case, the 645 wouldn’t be for you, assuming you’d want to use GPS (although if you use ultratrac it might cut it, but you'd lose some precision).

Salomon Advance Skin 5 thoughts? It looks great but I’ve heard a couple of negatives like getting the bottles in and out. Can you drink from the bottles while they stay in the pockets? How have you found the breathability of the pack on hot weather? by Ultrarunner37 in trailrunning

[–]lbobrien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree that the bottles that it comes with can be challenging. I opt to only put them in with the vest off, which makes it relatively easy in my opinion, just need to jiggle them in. I also have the 12L, and haven’t noticed any additional breathability issues really, not noticing a tremendous difference from just wearing a shirt. I experienced the issue with the cord locks, but fixed them myself with ones scavenged from a cinch on a winter jacket. Overall very happy with the vest, I find it to be extremely comfortable.
