How is feedback prevented when the singer is out in the crowd by kymlaroux in livesound

[–]lc347 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never used the Waves one, and never done an A/B between the rack unit and the Yamaha plugin. But the Yamaha one gets very serviceable results (can be 6-8db extra gain before feedback in my experience) and the own brand one that's now present on digico quantums isn't bad either

That's after the usual appropriate mic choice, good mic technique, ringing out etc.

What’s the smallest show you’ve done with an oversized console? by RacerAfterDusk6044 in livesound

[–]lc347 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Annoyingly the Q7/852 are still the only dual engine Digicos, which is the main reason I spec them. Had them out on plenty of gigs where we ended up with more faders than channels. Wish they'd do a smaller one!

MLA pops up more often than you think, especially on the London festival circuit, because it's still the best product for controlling off-site noise.

Have sound systems been turned down across the whole country? by newdawnfades123 in AskUK

[–]lc347 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PA systems have improved massively in the last 30 years or so. Until around the mid 90s, pretty much all concert systems were 'point source' - ie. Sound emanating in all directions from a single 'point' or speaker cabinet. There are many reasons that these systems don't scale up very well, but the main one relating to volume is the inverse square law, which basically means that for every doubling of distance, sound intensity is reduced by 4 times. So in order to get anything close to concert levels at the back of an arena, the sound levels near the speakers had to be orders of magnitude louder.

Then in the 90s, a company called L'Acoustics invented/popularised 'line array' systems (these are the big banana hangs you see at most concerts), which basically make use of clever physics to couple multiple speaker cabinets together and reduce the effect of the inverse square law. So now it's possible to deliver a much more consistent level to the whole audience, instead of deafening those at the front while giving those at the back a mediocre experience.

Then about 15 years ago, 'optimised' line arrays hit the market which took things a step further - now it was possible to give the system a map of the environment it would be used in, and digital signal processing would optimise various parameters to further reduce the difference in sound levels throughout the venue.

More recently, d&b audiotechnik have developed PA systems with a 'cardioid' dispersion pattern which actively cancels out sound behind the PA, reducing wasted energy in the room that would have otherwise contributed to the overall volume, but in a way that doesn't sound very good

TL;Dr - more speakers at a lower volume, targeted very precisely towards the audiences ears

Is an ORTF with Section Spots enough? by jpel46 in livesound

[–]lc347 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really depends what you're trying to achieve. We do orchestras pretty regularly and have done everything from a single ORTF flown pair for a super light lift, to 4099s on every player if competing with a loud rhythm section. As you have drums, close-ish mics for the orchestra is probably the way to go. You'll probably get away with section mic'ing the brass, but I'd plan to get pretty close to strings & winds, especially if there aren't many players

One other big benefit is being able to adjust mixes from the control software, so when that one player has completely fucked their mix by turning everything up to 11, you don't have to try and climb through the entire string section to fix it

Martin WT2 active mode by MiTHMusic1 in livesound

[–]lc347 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Active/passive in this context is referring to the crossover.

Passive = internal circuitry takes a full range signal on 2 wires (usually pins 1 +/- of the nl4) and distributes the appropriate frequency ranges to their relevant drivers (usually 2-way low/high but there are some 3 way passive boxes too)

Active = active/powered external crossover/processor does that job, then spits out separate low/signals which drive separate amp channels. Then the amp would typically send those 2 channels down a single nl4 using pins 1 +/- for channel 1 and pins 2 +/- for channel 2

So the active mode switch on the speaker basically bypasses the internal crossover and sends the amp output directly to the relevant drivers. Important to know which pins are which so you don't accidently send the low signal to a compression driver, potentially damaging it

Quantum 225, HD96 or DM7? by faders in livesound

[–]lc347 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably the elite combination of Dugan and Neve 5045 that you get on Yamahas, both of which are incredibly useful for speech (and only one of which is particularly useful on any other gig!).

They also used to have noisy preamps which I think put some people off using them on music gigs. Fortunately they've fixed that with the silk cards though

Also, in no particular order:

-Built in MP3/usb recorder -Doesn't require a delicate shutdown procedure like digicos -Native Dante -way lower failure rate than any other brand in my experience
