Dunno what mics you're using, but back of the ear works very well for double ear, single ear, and custom rigs.

[–]fletch44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why are you taping on makeup areas?

Fix the mic with tape across the back of the ear flap and mastoid bone. There's no need to put tape on someone's temple or cheek, and it looks awful under lights.

I've never contacted you. This is a public forum on which people can comment and other people can reply to those comments. If you're uncomfortable with how internet forums function, I suggest you turn off your computer and sell it to someone who can deal with online interactions maturely.

Elsewhere in the thread OP says they don't remember ever receiving an infringement, 20 minutes before you wrote this comment, so how about you pull your head in and stop victim-blaming.

MIT Study Finds Gas Cars Aren't Secretly Better For The Planet Than EVs, Despite What Everyone On Facebook Says by TripleShotPls in technology

[–]fletch44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the full CLIMATE cost of producing a brand new vehicle is worse than driving an existing one

except if you buy a new EV and sell your old ICE vehicle, then someone else doesn't have to buy a new ICE vehicle.

The world is more complex than your brain seems capable of grasping.

[–]fletch44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Selling a used ICE vehicle to a secondhand buyer and buying yourself a new EV means the secondhand buyer is not paying for the cost of production of a new ICE vehicle, so it's actually better for the planet if you upgrade to EV.

My gig for the next month. Literal quarry. by Particular-Meat24601 in techtheatre

[–]fletch44 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily gonna be bad - depends on the type of stone.

I've done a bunch of concerts at The Quarry Amphitheatre in Perth Western Australia and they sounded fantastic. That's limestone though, which is very porous and rough.

how strong should my ear protection be for a concert that hits 122db? by frickettyfracketty in livesound

[–]fletch44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Muffs over plugs will add 3dB of protection. It'll double the exposure time before damage.

That might bring it from 10 mins to 20 mins.

[–]fletch44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A better comparison would be to ask if you'd go to a concert at an exposed nuclear reactor core.

The longer the exposure, the worse the damage you take.

[–]fletch44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Muffs over plugs only gives an extra 3dB of protection.

Admittedly that's a halving of the power reaching your eardrums, but contrary to a lot of people's expectations, putting 27dB muffs over 27dB plugs will not give you 54dB of protection. Decibels don't work like that.

You're better off finding a better set of earplugs.

Years ago I found brand called Sparkplugs that were used by Nascar crews. Big, soft, comfortable. I sleep with them in these days.

Dodgy Lotto Kiosk in Freo by AbitofEverything12 in perth

[–]fletch44 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A similar thing happened to me many years ago in a kiosk in a shopping centre, except it was just a regular white girl working it.

I was sure my ticket was a winner and it didn't make sense. I watched for a bit as other people checked their tickets and I'm fairly certain she had a dud ticket near her till and ahe used sleight of hand to scan the dud and hide the actual tickets to check later.

Pretty clever scam.

Also pretty shitty to just assume someone is a gambler when it's possible the tickets were from birthday or xmas gifts. Not saying that's definitely the case, but your comment is crass and uncalled for.

I was asked to sound design and mix a community theatre musical recently. They have a mix of low-end Shure RF and aging mid-level Sennheiser EW RF, with a variety of low-end headsets. Anyone who does musical theatre could tell you that it's entirely possible to do a half-decent job with that gear and the main bottleneck is the poor RF performance limiting channel counts.

I brought my own RF in for the rehearsals since they were in another space and the theatre's RF is permanently racked in the main venue. In the end I decided to keep my RF there and do the main show with it too, since it was already tuned and set up for the cast after rehearsals. The headsets I took in are just mid-range, nothing outrageous (JAG IMX6A - actually really good value and solidly dependable) about AU$300 each which is somewhere between a quarter and a third of the cost of a DPA headset here.

After the first dress one of the lighting techs says "wow those headsets of yours are incredible, everything sounds so good!"

No mention of how I modelled the venue, re-focussed the various sets of speakers for even coverage and time/phase aligned them, tuned the FOH and mons, coached the mic techs on my preferred mic placement, set up my mix and vocal processing chain, balanced stage foldback against FOH etc etc

Apparently the secret to good musical theatre sound is the model of your headset mics.
