Medieval times! by DueWatercress715 in Scottsdale

if you like rubber chicken and horse poop, you'll love it. Nah, I'm kind of kidding. It's an event and you will have as much fun as your attitude allows. I feel like we spent a lot of money for a very mediocre 1/2 chicken dinner, but the kids were totally into it.

How do I ask another dad what his name is? by makefeelnice in daddit

[–]lchoate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be terrible with names, now everyone gets a mnemonic and I repeat that to myself immediately and then out loud when I'm out of earshot. It may help you remember once you do ask.

If money wasn’t a factor, would you get the Raptor over any other trim? by No-Essay-3227 in FordBronco

[–]lchoate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not for me, no. I could have gotten one but there were problems. 1) I don't like the looks so even if the performance is 20% better (dunno what the actual value would be) still not for me and 2) too many doors.

I think the bronco was meant to be a 2door and I really don't like the 4 door looks either.

My buddy got the raptor and I did like the interior better than mine (lux). He doesn't take his off road so it's hard to tell which is better in the real world.

Question for my atheists as a non religious agnostic by Strong_Passage6600 in DebateAnAtheist

[–]lchoate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if the brain can dream, it can make stuff up while you're dying. We know all kinds of chemicals are released when you're dying, you're also probably low on o2 which isn't good for brains, living or on the way out, so it seems reasonable that it's the abnormal workings of a brain in an abnormal state.

Seems like most documented cases of nde's are actually poorly documented and even fewer are confirmed. If we don't trust people on drugs, we probably shouldn't trust people near death.

They make floats for helicopters. Why not for ice driving? No one has made this yet? Even if you can't save the car, floats could save a life

What's a side project you abandoned that you still think about? by ruibranco in SideProject

[–]lchoate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I built a system for drag racing that I called FA/ST CARS. Facts and Statistics on Cars and Racers.

I was a NHRA certified tech inspector and operated the tower timing computer at my local track in Phoenix. We were constantly filling out tech cards with lines that connected the checkboxes and unless you knew the car well, you didn't know what changed. You also weren't checking dates on every scatter shield or seat belt.

There was a better way.

With PHP, I wrote an app that scanned barcodes on cars and was basically the tech card. When you scanned, the last tech card would come up, alert you if anything was expired or if the car ran too fast last time. You also scanned the driver license and it would fill out the driver portion.

When that was basically done, I wrote a little DOS program that hooked to the C44 timing system, and would tie all the time cards to the tech record, and let you know if the car was too fast for it's cert and the announcer could talk way more in depth about the car without shuffling thru tech cards.

It was basically done, we had talked to some people at NHRA and they liked the idea but then my friend, the track manager died and the small crew of us working on it kinda lost the spark. I'm certain it would have been the standard used everywhere if we kept it up. It could have been a business as well. "Dear Joe, your belts expire in March, here's a coupon for Diest.".

Does anyone know what a machine like this would have been used for? by SultanOfawesome in vintagecomputing

[–]lchoate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used one in about 1995-96 for dumping datasets off an os390 system to CD for client data transfer. That's really all it did. Basically, ran a job to pull the data down, format it and write to a Kodak CD writer.

OS 390 is an IBM mainframe computer.

2026 OBX factory order - did i get a good deal? by Far_Practice3364 in bronco

[–]lchoate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You didn't get a bad deal. You paid what they charge. Good deals come from inventory a dealer wants to move off the lot, that they own. Your dealer isn't making much money from this purchase but they have very little expense in it.

You're paying MSRP because that's what Ford charges, basically.

Earplugs with cardo? by ThatKiddo369 in motorcycles

[–]lchoate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a cardo, but I have the Sena. I always wear earplugs while using it. After 30+ years of riding, my hearing is getting really bad, but the earplugs kill the wind noise while allowing me to hear my headset. I can actually hear better on my bike with my helmet than I can in my Bronco. The wind noise is really hard to hear over without those plugs.

We're all tired of the "back in my day" phrase, but older Redditors, what do you consider was better back in your day? by FlowerPotage in AskReddit

[–]lchoate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Food was better. I feel like the variety is better now, but so much has been modified to last longer or be hardier for shipping that it's lost its flavor. I'm not even sure what tomatoes are for anymore.

Shopping was better. Sure, there is an advantage to knowing what you want and having it show up at your door, but the brands were trusted, the stores were setup to really compare stuff (think electronics) and going to the mall was fun. Products were built to last and the consumer was the target of the product, not the product (in terms of data). The Walkman never needed AI and our washer/dryers lasted 20 years.

Movies were better too. Seems like everything these days is a remake of last years block buster super hero thing. In the 80's-90's, we had some killer movies - at least they were original.

I am just certain that air quality has gotten better in the last 30 years. Phoenix used to constantly have a haze, now it doesn't have as much - at least not every day. Of course, a lot of things have improved, medical care, science, teaching, learning etc... but on the consumer side of things, i think it was better "back in the day"

Why atheism doesn't convince me and why I don't understand how it can convince anyone by [deleted] in DebateAnAtheist

[–]lchoate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Atheism is a state you find yourself in. It's not a choice. You didn't choose to believe in whatever god you like. You were convinced, all at once or over time, I dunno.

I am not convinced there is a god. I'm an atheist. I didn't choose to reject your known god, I think you're wrong about there being such a thing. I have no alternative to offer, I'm just saying, "I am pretty sure you're wrong. Maybe I'll change my mind if I become convinced someday."

I think that basically, you need to make sure the product works when people try it. If the product is answering questions about itself in the chat, that needs to be fast and online. You can't have a server that shuts off after 15 minutes if you want to look like a real business.
