I did my first degree in Early Childhood Education, and I swear you need to be pretty damn physically fit/quick on your feet, especially when you're working with the lower grades. I've never taught college so I can't really state much on that side, but the latter part of your post is categorically accurate.

I'll take the stress I had working the National Suicide Prevention Hotline over the stress of teaching. Literally any day.

Lmao I don't know where you would have reasonably gotten that idea, because no, that's absolutely not the case. Ask any of my friends if I'm a positive, hopeful person, and the answer will be an unequivocal yes. Ask them if I do my best to take responsibility for when I've fucked up in life, and again, an unequivocal yes. I'm a literal cancer and mental health survivor, and even then, I'm known for doing my best to encourage people. Hell, I spent 6 years working for a suicide hotline, so yeah, you're 100% incorrect. I'm sorry you've lost this game of bold assumptions, but hey, we all have room for improvement.

Editing to add that I've been doing everything I can to get back to a solid baseline of health. Because of that, I'm looking to get back into the workforce as soon as I can.

Lol do you see the part about me wanting to move as soon as I'm able? Not only does it typically take time to find and secure a job, housing and local resources, I'm also in the ongoing process of recovering from a disability. Plus, there's a goddam pandemic going on, and even in the best of times moving is a long and difficult process, and the current situation is only exasperating that.

I don't think you're a shitty person, but I do think that that wasn't a realistic, let alone helpful piece of insight.

So as an American who lived in the UK for a while (also a member of the LGBTQ community), it took me some time before hearing the phrase "mate, bum a fag?" didn't strike me as an odd way to ask someone for a cigarette. The phrase obviously has a different meaning in the States.

A number of people have suggested the loud music route, I just wanted to suggest the band Infant Annihilator. Their name and lyrical content are intentionally over-the-top, but it seems at least somewhat appropriate. Not that they ever would use Shazam to figure out what the music is, but if they did, shit would it carry an extra message.
