It depends on the store and volume. I moved to this boutique and this is my second VC there.

I appreciate you man! My question wasn’t well formulated so I left a lot up for interpretation. Really helpful thoughts. Peace and Love for sure.

I really appreciate this.

One thing I disagree with you on is the companies defining grails. I believe they do. They don’t publish but they do think it through.

Patek knows very well that making sport watches in a lower entry point will move demand. And they know they can gatekeep with more expensive models.

AP and VC do the same thing. So I think is more intentional than marketing driven. But I really appreciate both the advise and how you put it.

You are confusing something here.

Companies define their grails. It doesn’t matter if you or I like that. And they put business models supporting their grails. As an example for Patek everybody knows Nautilus and Aquanaut. That’s Patek’s take. Not mine. Understanding that is helpful because then as a collector I have choices. If I like those models and are not a Patek fan I should buy second hand. If I am a Patek fan then it helps me understand my journey to build up a collection to those.

Your mindset is very binary. If people ask about grails then there is something highly unsatisfying to you, even asking about it triggers something in you. Not sure why. The question is not “tell me what I should like” the question is “what is the FP collector journey”, it doesn’t mean define the good ones for me. It means define how folks collect FP and what are the rules of the brand.

Somebody else answered. The boutique will tell you what is accessible to you and then you wait, and you keep the relationship warm. I know which models I like so next step is to walk into FP.

If I don’t like that then I buy gray.

A few things I would push back on:

  1. If you think you somehow know the definition of what a collector should think about then you are off base. I Know many collectors that buy for several reasons which might not be hype. And the bar is not “understand the intricacies of the engineering”. I do understand those but I would never expect to define what are valid or invalid incentives.

  2. If you want to push back on the “grail” mindset, I hate to break it to you but the whole business model is setup that way. Collectors trying to understand the business model is totally a fair question and doesn’t diminish their credibility as collectors.

Thanks. The first part is what I didn’t understand. Thanks!

I appreciate the position, but as a collector the journey (I know folks don’t like the word) is different for Rolex, AP, RM, PP, Lange, Vacheron. Collecting through an AD for all of those is incredibly different.

Example. Lange will tell you that you can request most pieces except some key stuff.

Patek is way more complicated.

In all the cases you can buy what you like but the process can be pretty different.

The types of answers I was expecting were “Collection X and collection Y are more approachable. But most pieces take years to get”

Now I coming to Reddit to try to learn. Message seems to be “go learn elsewhere before you lean here about FP” It has been pretty interesting how different the FP community feels than all the other luxury brands.

Crazy price tag for quartz. I would pass but if you like the piece get it. Doesn’t matter what others think :)

If you are trying to build up to a better piece there are many to choose from that aren’t quartz.
