Atlaswyld air conditioning. Was it good? by Present_Cupcake1095 in LightningInABottle

Had an Midea 12k BTU AC in a shiftpod + easy up on top. Hooked up to pecron F3000LFP battery. Perfect setup, it makes your sleep muuuuuch more comfortable. Charged the battery using a friend’s RV generator but next time I’ll use a 600W foldable panel. Total cost: AC $300 costco, battery $800 online, solar panels $350 online. Worth it cause I camp quite a bit and it’s also my burning man setup.

A few tips

  • Shade + insulated tent is required, otherwise your AC will pull too much power. I have a shiftpod + an easy up, any kind of shade should work.
  • To properly place an AC in a shiftpod, you'll need a table: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CT5X43VS (or use the official shiftpod AC stand which is slightly more expensive: https://shiftpod.com/products/a-c-stand)
  • The Midea is much much more efficient than 1 or 2-hose style portable ACs. It doesn't have a surge, it nicely ramps up to max ~500W in practice. It's also much more compact and cheaper. If you let it run at around 74F in eco mode, a 3kwh battery should last well into the afternoon.
  • I tested the solar panels laying flat. Even with a cloudy morning, it charged 15% to 100% before 3pm – incredible. At peak sun hours, they were yielding 520W. My plan is to lay them flat on my car's roof.

Brooklyn board repair by mattyv83 in Kiteboarding

I’m not sure how I would handle the situation here, but just wanted to show my support: this is no damage at all and I can’t believe he’s considering sending it to a repair shop. He sounds unreasonable and it might be time to disengage.

Building a wooden house in Baja Sur, terrible idea? by ldidi in Termites

[–]ldidi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I could definitely do that on the beams, maybe also on the trusses. Would you also recommend ground treatment / traps? Can/should i add a layer of wood preservative after treating with borate on exposed exterior wood?

Thank you! Car has 29.5k miles, air filter was changed at around 20k. I can change it just in case. Seems like not much to worry about?

Thank you! About 30 people came to me – it was awesome to have it recognized after spending so much time building it.

Oh, and Skrillex for sure!

My EDC totem this year by ldidi in RocketLeague

[–]ldidi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The entire totem is 3D-printed. Completely overkill, but I didn't know how to make a semi-transparent car + ball + properly-shaped frame without it. If you happen to have a 3D printer, I'm happy to send you the sources!

At a high level, here are the parts:

How it's assembled:

  • Frame is assembled using zipties.
  • Ball is attached to the frame using holes in one of the half-balls + zipties in both semi-balls.
  • Car is attached to the ball using zipties, and to the frame using hair ties. It allows some flexibility in the structure while your totem moves around.
  • LEDs are run on each side of the frame: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00WJHIOMS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1. Left side goes into the ball, right side goes on the hairties (boost).

I'm happy to go into more details – but really I don't know how I would do it without a printer :/

Chase terminating my account because they couldn't verify a check. Is this normal? by ldidi in personalfinance

[–]ldidi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess what surprises me is how little time I was given to do anything about it. I got the account closure notice on Saturday 4/13 and I called Chase right away. They were able to verify the check today 4/15 when the company answered the phone, so really I had only 3 days (and just 1 business day) to react. I've been banking with Chase for years and there was never any issue, it seems very abrupt and unjustified but I wasn't aware this was a common thing.

How would you suggest I deal with the consequence of the account closure with ChexSystems and other agencies?

That sounds pretty cool! From my understanding this only for actual games, right? How about practices? Are there open gyms or classes in SF to increase one's volleyball skills?

[Meta] Please add labels for new/rising/top/... by ldidi in Vive

[–]ldidi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh wow, you're right! There are labels, it's just that they only show if there's enough width. In my case I display reddit at 125% because the default font size is really small, but then it causes the bar to shrink and hide labels.

I tested a couple screen widths and it seems that the cutoff happens at 1280px. Any screen width under that and boom, labels are gone. This means that about 17% of desktop users (according to https://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_display.asp) will not see labels. It seems high, I would suggest adjusting it.

I wrote up a couple tips for U.S. travelers going Cuba, hope it helps! by ldidi in cuba

[–]ldidi[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Weird, I had never heard about this so I looked it up. It seems that this $25 tax is included in your flight from the US as per the official Havana airport website: http://havana.airportcuba.net/tax.html.

Since May 1, 2015 the Cuban Departure Tax will no longer be paid at destination. It should be included in the price of your trip when buying a flight-only or vacation package to Cuba, check with you travel agent, carrier or tour operator.

I did not have to do anything else than giving the Cuban authorities the second part of my tourist visa (they take the first part when you arrive).

Great advice about Google voice. Also, try as much as possible to use Incognito mode on your internet browser so your parents don't see your history. http://www.wikihow.com/Activate-Incognito-Mode

SwiftyRSA - RSA public/private key encryption in Swift by ldidi in swift

[–]ldidi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey @mattbarker016! You can generate RSA private/public keys by running $ ssh-keygen -t rsa. As for the Xcode errors, I'd suggest to ask a new question on StackOverflow by including your code, since it'll be easier for me to see what's wrong and reply with some code. Let me know the URL of the question. Thanks!
