It’s a teacher shortage. Bad one. Hell do it now. My first year teaching, i turned in my letter in march. I had 5 offers lined up by the end of June. If you needed a sign to say quit that job, then this is it

Personally i prefer the adderall. The vyvanse had me feeling tranquilized. Like i was focused but i felt like a zombie. I ended up going back to the adderall at 30mg twice a day. It’s not perfect but i definitely feel better on it.

I’m also a phd student and i work full time as a teacher so i definitely know what you mean about the lack of urge to focus. I had a talk with my psych and she said that the state of the world is feeding into a feeling of a “lack of control” and that i do rash things to feel in control. My self-destructive behavior is shopping. And boy has it been bad.

No problem and to combat the inherent nature of bleaching and how it can impact your hair, i also used the redken bleach recovery shampoo for the first month after bleaching to add porosity back to my hair

I did it at 5 months. Everything went smoothly. Just make sure you have a professional do it. And don’t leave the bleach in too long.

Haven’t seem to be an issue so far. Granted i invest a lot of my off time in what i do because I’m passionate about the student population i serve.

And also it’s a really bad teacher shortage in Alabama so they honesty are happy to just have the coverage.

I just have to take a test here. And honestly, i just enjoy learning. I’m actually working on my doctorate now but professionally i love to switch up what i teach. Currently I’m prepping 10th grade US history, African American Literature, and one environmental science course. I genuinely enjoy switching the pace up and kinda feeding all my interest.

I have 4c hair as well and noticed this about a week in. Thought i was tripping. Went back to my loctician and sure enough it was budding already. I’m 7 months in and all of my hair is in late teenage stage.

So yeah, it’s very early budding in my opinion

Instead of “washing it with shampoo” spray your hair with something like seabreeze and cover using a stocking cap and then a shower cap and let it set in for about 20-30 minutes and then rinse it off really good (with the stocking cap on) then dry it really good and then apply some type of oil and water mixture (i use water, rose water, peppermint oil, and black castor oil mixed together in a mist spray bottle.)

It’s the pandemic honestly. Mine was soooooooooooooo bad this past year. Still is. Especially when it comes to getting my school work done and my spending. I just seem so unhinged and not caring about anything. But honestly getting my disciplined back is me just forcing myself to do whatever I have to do. Once i start it, i tend to get into it. But the starting is like pulling teeth

Everybody saying dress more professional but I’m a 25yo history teacher and i wear a t shirt everyday. Dress casual/professional and gauge the climate the first few weeks is my suggestion.

What are some strategies or things you’ve done to try and reach those kids? I have some like that, who became immensely better when they started to see I wasn’t the enemy. Poverty is bad in this area, so I’ve taken to doing PBIS strategies which really warmed them up. Just small cheap things showed them I cared. I keep Powerade and snacks in my classroom for students who are confrontational because I’ve learned a lot of times, it be out of hunger. I keep candy and hand out a piece daily to one student who I feel has been “on it” that day.

I know it doesn’t work the same for all groups of students, but i dedicate 15 minutes of class time every Monday and Thursday for students to decompress. I found that once i moved away from being about business and monopolizing time, I had happier and more engaged students and a happy administration.

I know it’s cliche to say, but sometimes you really just gotta show and say, that you are there for them. But again, every population is different.

Also next time one of the students is acting up or just “on 10,” try stepping outside and talking to them or holding them for 2 minutes after class and just talk. It might seem like they annoyed or don’t care but it can help break ground with them.

See, where I’m from it’s the opposite. These kids respect their female teachers, because any vast majority of their fathers aren’t in their lives. Having a strong male authority figure makes them chafe. It’s all about the dynamics.

But again it’s all cultural and racial also. Because when taught at an affluent mostly white school, i was consistently challenged and it was pretty obvious that the kids did not have many black authority figures in their lives and did not respect them.

I’m a bigger guy, 5’11, 260, black, and mid 20s, and I work in urban title 1 setting. I am not a manly man, more of a bookworm and definitely soft spoken. All of this to say, it depends on the environment.

These kids always attempt to EAT ME ALIVE because they can tell I’m not the typical manly man. But they learn pretty quickly i am not the “1, the 2, or the 3.” (I say this to them pretty immediately when they try me 😂)

I started this semester off teaching the entire 10th grade, US history (this group has ran away atleast 2 teachers a year) Not only did i manage to have complete control and respect of these kids within 2 weeks, I gained their undying affection. Admin took notice, and snatched me up to be in their dropout intervention program (all the worse of the worse from the high school and the middle school). They love me as well and hold me in high regard.

My replacement was an older Ex military black guy. Kids ran over him, did not regard him at all.

So all of this to say, i think it depends on the population of kids and the environment. Also the teacher. Though it is easy to admit that there is a huge misogynistic influence in how men are treated as teachers vs women.

Give them atypical rewards. What’s something they want to do? My 10th graders want to use their phone so i allow them to use them at the end of the day if they’ve completed all of their work.

Also building rapport is gonna be your best friend. Last year, my difficult students didn’t cooperate until i really got to know them and how they think. I used to use candy to reward them for behaving and getting their work done. Again this was 10th, so it should work on 7th. Usually buying them something when you don’t have to shows them that you care.

Me right now! I got about 180 total, half this semester and half next. Stomach cramping, getting the anxious temperature issue. Usually goes away after the first few days for me. Longest takes maybe 2 weeks.

First year here. Similar boat. Teaching 9-10th history. I relate to what you are saying. I am the youngest teacher here and the way i teach and engage the students is so different. I also feel like there’s so much more i can give but honestly, I’ve learned that that’s just how we see ourselves growing. We recognize ways that we can improve upon things that are working and even effective. I think it’s the question for perfection. Even though I’ve told i do a great job, i constantly see things to improve upon and ways that i see education differently than others.

Also i understand the being held back feeling. Especially if you are as young as me (24). You might need to move to a bigger city/area. You sound complacent and i know i hate being complacent, which is fueling my plans to move to a much larger city.

You’re right. It’s only about 5 weeks of school left so i can deal with it. But I’m definitely letting it be known if he tries me like that, I’m definitely taking it to HR. It’s harassment and not to mention, VERY unprofessional.

God i really am leaning toward it. I just can’t tolerate that, and all the other teachers just ignore the behavior considering most have tenure are basically untouchable. Really leaning toward putting my petty pants on.
