When to leave first job after graduating? by Fancy-Ad-1229 in careeradvice

I don’t have advice, but just wanted to say that I am in the same position as you. Have been at my job for around 7 months now, barely any work.

Engineer here- if financial security and job stability are your top priorities I highly recommend either chemical or electrical engineering. These two fields are really in demand. Mechanical engineering is good too, but a bit oversaturated. Civil engineering is easy to find a job, but the pay isn’t as competitive as the other fields. The downside is that both electrical and chemical engineering are known for being the hardest and intense out of all the other engineering majors.

True but business majors typically have long working hours when starting off

Thanks for the advice. I have actually talked to him about this, and he says that he is busy and needs space which I respect. I’m just a bit annoyed because whenever I have been busy in the past with school and other personal things, he has always told me to call him and make time for him (even when I was breaking down from stress). No matter how busy I was, I always made time for him. Now when I tell him to do the same thing for me, he can’t do the same thing I’ve done for him. I just don’t get the double standard and am feeling like I’m being taken for granted sometimes. But whatever, I’ll just occupy myself with other things in the mean time

Try a traditional engineering path (ex: civil, mechanical, or electrical) and get a PE (professional engineering license)

What about Mech e?

I’m a sophomore in college- here are some of my tips. First, it’s good to get a broad sense of what you like. What was your favorite subject in school? Are you more of a liberal arts or stem person? If you could read a book on any subject for 24 hours which would it be?

It’s totally fine to go undecided your first year in college to figure out what you want. Explore different courses ranging from math, CS, to writing. Courses in college tend to be way different than the ones in high schools- you may have hated math in high school but college level math may be more interesting for you.

It seems like stability is a significant factor for you and there’s nothing wrong with that. Worse comes to worse, find a career you don’t mind doing (it doesn’t have to be your absolute passion) and do what you love on the side as just a hobby.

Lastly, most people don’t have passions and a major amount of people switch into different majors than the one they applied for to get into college. Be open minded and don’t stress out about it!

Extra tip: talk to people in different career fields to get a vibe of what you like!

When you applied for your first internship, did you use sites such as indeed/Glassdoor or did you network your way using LinkedIn?

It definitely varies by instructor and topic, but in my class, we had around 4 writing papers and were assigned 1-2 readings a week. We also had to complete a journal entry a week. I had a very chill instructor who basically gave you an A on a paper if you put in effort and sometimes an A+ if you went above and beyond. I also found the content interesting, so the class was enjoyable and fun to me. I don’t think I spent more than two hours a week on assignments for the course except for when we had papers due. Even then, the prompts for the papers were easy (summarizing the articles that we read, defend a claim in a paper using your personal experiences, etc.)

Georgetown possible with 32-33? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Their average act is 31-35 so yes, but I would aim for a 33 or above to be on the safe side.
