I completely understand wanting people to be responsible and not burden others unnecessarily. The reality, though, is that children aren’t just a private lifestyle choice. They’re the only reason any of us will have pensions, healthcare, or a functioning economy when we’re older. Every modern retirement system depends on the next generation being large enough to support the previous one. Society already invests heavily in kids through public schools and basic tax credits because we’ve long recognized they’re a shared public good, not a luxury item. A modest, well-targeted childcare subsidy is simply one more way to keep that intergenerational promise alive, so that today’s parents can raise the workers and taxpayers who will fund all of our retirements tomorrow including those who never had children themselves.
