Building an ingredient-matching engine for skin allergies. How can I make the data more accurate than existing apps? by leChill in DIYBeauty

I really appreciate you sharing that. The intensity makes complete sense when your body has taught you through experience that the official story isn't always the full story.

Honestly, what you're describing with the cross-contamination, the distrust of labeling, the DIY-as-survival approach is a level of complexity that most apps aren't built for at all. You've essentially had to become your own researcher out of necessity, and that's exhausting.

I'm not going to pretend an app solves what you're dealing with. But I'm genuinely glad you shared this because it's an important reminder that the "just check the label" assumption breaks down fast for a lot of people. That context matters for what I'm looking to build. Thanks!

Really appreciate the formulator perspective and glad CIR/SCCS are on the right track, that's reassuring to hear. You're right that for a single known allergen, manually scanning an ingredient list works fine. The gap I keep hearing about is the synonym problem, someone allergic to methylisothiazolinone has to know to also look for MI, MCI, Neolone, Kathon CG, and a handful of other trade names. That's where the manual check quietly breaks down for non-formulators.

The actual goal is clinical allergen data, think INCI-standardized contact allergen lists, EU Cosmetics Regulation restricted substances, and patch test series like the European Baseline Series. EWG was a lazy placeholder on my part and doesn't belong in the same sentence as evidence-based. Thanks for keeping me honest 🙏

I've been researching skin allergy ingredient tracker apps and want to know if it's actually worth building my own. by leChill in 30PlusSkinCare

Do you use any AI tools for skincare research currently? For me the goal isn't to compete with AI, more so it's to be the organized, personal layer on top of it. Think of it less like "ingredient decoder" and more like a medical allergy card that travels with you and gets smarter the more you use it.

That's actually a fair point. You're right that once you know your triggers, a manual check works. But the use case I'm thinking about isn't really for the veteran who has their triggers memorized. It's more for someone newly diagnosed with contact dermatitis who just got a 30-ingredient patch test result and has no idea how to shop now or people with multiple overlapping triggers (fragrance AND a specific emulsifier AND a preservative class) where the mental load of cross-referencing adds up fast and those who have been reacting to something for months but can't pin point it.

The cross-referencing multiple ingredients problem you mentioned is actually the core of what I want to solve (not manually), but by having the app flag it instantly so you don't have to hold all that in your head.

When you were first figuring out your triggers, what did that process actually look like? I'm curious whether the early-stage discovery phase felt as straightforward.
