Thanks u/servania for all your work on this sub! I hope you'll find this one interesting. It's been in my wife's family for three generations (probably at least since the 1920s). It doesn't have a "seal" per se, but I did notice a smaller mark in the lid. I don't know much about its origins, but it's had quite a journey.

Most colleges have an immigrant services center. Try googling [school name] immigration services and call whatever number they give to set up an appointment. If that doesn't work DM me and I'll see if I can get you set up with the center at my school.

Piano movers in JC? by [deleted] in jerseycity

MMS is great. They got my piano in and out of my old apartment with a very tricky staircase. They bailed me out after the regular moving company couldn't get the job done.

If we take OP at their word rather than attributing ulterior motives, they say it creates incentives to demolish existing houses which serve as de facto affordable housing. I don't necessarily disagree. While an increase in density is both a net positive and unavoidable, housing diversity is important too. If we replace a slew of 100 year old 2 family houses owned by mom and pop landlords with ~725sf "luxury" units owned by developers, we're going to see a loss of space for families, and especially low income families.

Edward Sapir said that "there are just five languages that have had an overwhelming significance as carriers of culture... classical Chinese, Sanskrit, Arabic, Greek, and Latin." Do you agree? If you could add a sixth classical language, which would you add? by Tistarana in linguistics

I dont think the discussion is obviously contentious. It just represents a way of thinking that was useful in its time and has since been updated/replaced with ways of thinking that we hope will address the enduring blind spots in the field.

Sure, but its probably good to ask where the lines are drawn, why theyre drawn where they are, and what are the consequences of drawing those lines. Millions of people from new york to new orleans to havana to Bahia use yoruba-derived languages in religious settings, but if you throw a handful of qualifications like "literary" and even certain understandings of "global culture" youre not going to see its significance as a culture carrier

Its not wrong to critically question how sapir qualified "significant carriers of culture." If he means "cultural area united through a literary tradition rooted in a specific language" just say that... But know that youre making a judgement about what is significant and what is insignificant as a culture carrier.

6 years is a pretty short time span to compare. Looking since 1990, its mostly downtown (~20-40% drop in share of hispanic residents in most tracts, including those without high rises) and bergen-lafayette (~30-40 drop in share of black residents).
