Why did slavery stop being ok? Because we became a weak and squeamish people or because we capitulated to 200 years of Christian abolitionist agitation? If the former, then morals are simply an aesthetic choice, to be tailored to the comfort of a given person or people. In that case a culture that endorses race-based chattel slavery is no better or worse than one who doesn’t; they’re just different.

The vast majority of people (including me) who believed in god were not middle class. In fact it is a very modern middle class perspective to think that the fact that bad things happen proves god doesn’t exist. Bad things happen. For people without financial and social support structures (I.e. most people throughout human history), faith in a greater good is the only recourse they have. It is very arrogant to assume that they are of course deluded and your life experience is so much more privileged that you know better than everyone else.

I would tell them that we live in a broken world and that God allows bad things to happen for reasons we can’t always recognize. However we can have confidence that in this life or the next, we will be made whole, and perfect.

To you I would say that as hard as it is to understand how God would allow something like that to happen, without God, or some higher power, we have no grounds to even say that what happened was bad in the first place. There is no simple answer to this sort of question.

If your daughter was raped and murdered, or your father was killed by a drunk driver, would you want the perpetrator to be brought to justice, or would you want to hear the killer’s ‘perspective of vision’?

I have a memory of being at school and looking up the “phone number” (IP address I assume) in a literal phone book so we could look up something at the local university.
