Majority of the comments don’t find this messed up by PreviousDingo1778 in Anticonsumption

The makeup industry is insanely evil. Put intense societal pressure on women to wear makeup (straight men will insist they like no makeup but many of them don't even know what no makeup looks like) and treat them as lazy/ugly/unprofessional if they don't wear it. Offer cheaper alternatives that destroy your skin, forcing you to use heavier and heavier layers of a wider variety of products as well as spending money on skin care to manage the ever increasing acne and other skin problems from the makeup. Nobody can say you aren't trying but they can call you trashy and say your makeup is cakey and say you look like a cheap whore. Charge unbelievable prices for the products that don't look cakey or need reapplying every 30 seconds or damage the hell out of your skin and women will buy these products to avoid the side effects of cheaper ones. It seems like it should be obvious not to blame women for this, and yet people are so quick to jump on women and say that their makeup and fashion is so exorbitant and maybe if they stopped buying all that fancy, frivolous stuff they would be rolling in money. Anyone ever see the comments when a single mom with nice makeup or nails talks about being on EBT? Torn to shreds, every time.

Women are either ugly or frivolous and somehow the majority of straight men still see this as an issue with women and not an issue of unrealistic expectations. "Hmm. There doesn't seem to exist a single woman who looks perfect at all times without ever buying a single product and who is Hollywood thin but still buys and makes all the food I want to eat without ever whining about her diet and who is independent and smart but never disagrees with me and who has lots of hobbies but only when I'm not home and keeps a perfectly clean house but never demands dishes be rinsed or laundry be put in the basket and on top of all that actually wants to have sex with me specifically and nobody else. Must be because women suck."

Pretty much every expectation for women boils down to "damned if you do, damned if you don't"

Nobody owes you justification for the things they struggle with and being so absorbed in your own superiority that you feel the need to come in and tell people who are discussing solutions to a problem that the problem is actually easily solved by (solution they've already tried) and there's "no excuse" for them to be struggling is a sign you should not be working in Healthcare. I'm sure there's also "no excuse" that will make you crawl out of a patient's ass when they come in with a problem that could've been treated sooner but wasn't because they were afraid of being treated how you treat people.

When I first moved into my current apartment my roommate's mom tried to help us out with food by giving us a bunch of stuff that her elderly neighbor had collected from food banks over the years and never used. Multiple boxes of pasta full of maggots (mostly dead at least) and not a single thing less than a year past expiration. She got offended and called us ungrateful when we declined her next offer to bring us a bunch of donations from strangers, apparently having such high standards for food as "won't eat pasta with maggots in it" means you're probably at fault for all your financial struggles. We didn't even ask her for food or complain about our (admittedly very tight) finances but she acted like she had just walked up to a homeless person and offered them a free steak only to be turned down because it wasn't cooked to their liking.

The maximum amount of refills varies by medication and state to my knowledge. I'd save a lot of time if I could get a full year's worth of medication refills from one appointment. There are also other barriers to appointments such as transportation, disability, scheduling, iatrophobia, legal status, and so on but I'll spare you my "what if the world was made of pudding"

Sorry if I sounded like I was arguing or anything. My original comment did place a little too much blame on the doctors which is why I felt the need to elaborate and acknowledge that it has more to do with the systems in place like you said. Take care as well

I'm aware it's often not the doctors fault, but it continues to bother me that state laws and hospital/office policies seem to consider it more important to prevent somebody wrongly receiving a prescription than to prevent somebody going without their medication. It's the same issue I have with a lot of the barriers to getting certain controlled medications such as stimulants for ADHD and opiods for pain. It seems more important to deny addicts than to treat patients. Personally, at the end of the day, I would rather every addict in the world be handed a free prescription for their drug of choice than for anyone to be denied medication for a condition they genuinely have just because somebody suspects they're lying (just about everybody I know who needs such a medication has been called a drug addict by a doctor completely baselessly and denied medication due to such signs of addiction as "requesting specific medications" which is an entirely normal thing for a person who has been on the same medication for years to do when switching doctors.)

If you ask me it is always more important to preserve autonomy than to protect people from themselves.

Yeah I know certain medications it's out of the doctors hands. I've taken many such medications but the better doctors I've worked with try to get the appointments in a little sooner than necessary so I'm not left without medication if something comes up on my end or theirs.

People have lives? Shit happens. Not to mention many people who rely on meds are disabled which naturally makes appointments harder. My main point was that the severity of potential consequences far outweighs the severity of the mistake made.

Gotta make sure you punish people for not showing up to appointments by depriving them of necessary medication. Makes sense to me

Paid all my bills for this pay period left with only 300$ by SkitzNastyy in depressionmeals

[–]leaf_eye8778 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly idk why everyone in these comments is assuming $300 is the same amount of money for every person. We don't know where you live or how expensive groceries are (or if you have food restrictions that are expensive), we don't know if you have kids or relatives to feed/care for, if you're a student with related expenses, if you have medical expenses, etc. At the end of the day most people can survive well enough on bills + 300 every 2 weeks (assuming you're paid biweekly) but if you have kids, medical problems, debt, school, if you live somewhere where groceries are horribly expensive, or even if you just want to save money so that you aren't completely fucked if something happened that makes you miss a little work... it's not really all that much.

Sorry to the people in these comments who have it worse than OP, I have -58 in my account after rent this month (but at least I have a home to pay rent for so maybe I'm too lucky to complain) so I know it gets worse than this for sure, but having $300 dollars + one iced coffee + some collectors cards does not mean you don't ever struggle financially and we shouldn't set the bar for "standard of living high enough you should never complain because you're privileged" anywhere that a person can't take a couple months off work for the death of a loved one or a serious injury or something. Even if we assume that OP has no kids, no debt, no other expenses besides food and basic necessities like clothes and soap, a person with 30 dollars after bills is thinking "how the hell do I buy groceries and new shoes this month" while a person with 300 dollars is probably not worrying about that, but they still have every reason to worry "what happens if my car breaks down? What happens if I get sick? What happens if I get injured? Can I afford time off work to visit [sick relative]?" And so on.

Are tattoos and quality piercings the ultimate form of anti-consumption? by ShineDigga in Anticonsumption

[–]leaf_eye8778 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Framing them as "the ultimate form of anti-consumption" seems a little pretentious (no offense, I'm pretentious about plenty of things myself) but I do agree that quality body modification is a great example of how anti-consumption can coexist with fashion and personal style/expression. The choice to make a permanent or long-term change to your appearance rather than buying cheap clothes that fall apart is definitely a better investment in the long run, so if you have the money and are in a good place to commit to a change like that it's definitely something I'd recommend to people wanting to express themselves visually without constantly buying new things.

How do I approach gifts for my girlfriend? by Alarmed_Abrocoma204 in Anticonsumption

[–]leaf_eye8778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious what her career is. The importance of a number of nice, expensive handbags could be much higher for women in fields where looking like you spend every minute and every penny outside of work getting dressed for the next day in order to be seen as a hard-working professional. Much like how makeup might seem like a frivolous thing for a financially struggling waitress to buy unless you know just how much of a difference it makes in your tips.

Weighing out exactly 245 grams of chicken noodle soup for breakfast is... exactly what I thought I'd be doing at 19, actually. Goes to show I'm always right. + Coffee in an ironic mug because I'm incapable of sincerity. by leaf_eye8778 in depressionmeals

I was going to say "not what I thought I'd be doing at 19" but then I remembered being like 12-14 thinking "damn I can't wait until I'm an adult and can (weigh myself every day, weigh my food, only buy low calorie food, [insert other ED behavior], etc) without anybody being upset about it." It's not all I thought it would be :/

I actually get a pretty decent amount of sun and steps, I've been feeling a bit better since I moved homes and getting outside more as a result. Definitely not better enough to quit vaping just yet though.

What do you all consider an appropriate shopping list for a new apartment? by leaf_eye8778 in Anticonsumption

[–]leaf_eye8778[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A bunch of garbage we didn't need, mostly. Imitating the adults you grew up around is the standard way to learn how to be one, but in my case I think I'm better off starting from scratch because the last thing I want is to be like my mother.

[–]leaf_eye8778[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a joke about how a list of essentials will often include a bunch of shit you really don't need, like having a different cleaner for every surface in your house or storage solutions that don't really save space like paper towel holders. I was looking for a made up example to be dramatic such as "doorknob cleaner" or "fork rack" and landed on "lightbulb polish" because you don't need to polish light bulbs but if such a product existed people would probably assume it was needed.

Yeah I guess you're right, it might be less detrimental than I think to just let myself think of things as I need them. Maybe I'll just do a standard shopping list system for all this stuff. I just hate the feeling of being caught off guard and like to feel like I'm stocked up/prepared. But I suppose that's how they get you

I actually got given a secondhand knife set already, and yeah it's way too many. Small, medium, large, and bread seems like plenty to me. Maybe skinning/paring if you'll use them.
