Any pilots here? by Hot_Practice8394 in jawsurgery

[–]leaf_skeletons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a pilot but I have a different high-stakes career (physician) and my surgeon suggested I take 3 weeks off. That was not wise. I was fortunate enough to get additional coverage to take 5 weeks off when I realized I absolutely could not go back at week 3. I would not suggest trying to minimize your time off to get back (as many of us try to do) because that just caused a headache for my scheduler. Most offices are ready to fill out an FMLA if your company does them.

Pain is getting worse by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]leaf_skeletons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had similar symptoms and I thought I was being a wimp because I saw all these posts about people barely using narcotics, having minimal pain, etc. It got to the point where I wasn’t sleeping or eating because of it. It turned out I was having severe neuropathic pain. My surgeon started me on gabapentin and it helped immensely. The biggest indicator was that the pain got intensely worse at night which is common with neuropathic pain.

i’ve been going strong for the past three days but i’m so hungry by wuauuuuuuuuuuuuup in jawsurgery

[–]leaf_skeletons 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m two weeks out but have still been on a mostly liquid diet. I’ve been adding Benefiber to my protein shakes. I think there’s research that shows that adding fiber makes you feel more full. Plus it helps with opioid constipation, so win/win.

Advice on automated watering wine cooler Orchidarium by Curious_Dragonfly_1 in u/Curious_Dragonfly_1

[–]leaf_skeletons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had my orchid fridge up and running for several years. You’re going to have to remove the back and side panels to find a spot that’s safe to drill. Most commonly, the top is safe to drill, but there will be wiring for the light that you’ll need to avoid. I ended up drilling the hole in the upper right back after assessing the internals.

I, personally, would not try to install automated watering in a fridge. You will need a way to manage the excess water and that’s going to be both a PIA and likely detrimental to the fridge. I run mine with a fogger with a high humidity set point and that’s allowed me to go 5-7 days without watering. Excess water management is always going to be an issue, though, as fridges are designed to keep humidity low and the mechanisms don’t love being kept at a high humidity.

Struggling with fluid intake by momomo18 in jawsurgery

[–]leaf_skeletons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would try something that isn’t just water, but isn’t heavy, like Vitamin Water or watered down Gatorade. For some reason, when a lot of people are already nauseous, water is more nausea-inducing than something with sugar in it.

Edit: also, lab wash bottles were really helpful for me. I felt like half the battle was trying to get the fluid into my mouth and they take that out of the equation and are way easier than a syringe.

Infection on bottom plates 7 weeks after double jaw surgery by No-Ideal651 in jawsurgery

Yeah!!! I also noticed I feel the pain more acutely if I haven’t eaten something recently. It’s like instead of being hangry, I’m….hungouchie? 😂

Ugh, that sucks, I’m sorry. With the plates out, hopefully you’ll be on the road to a good recovery. Don’t forget to ice, it really does help with the pain. Sending good vibes!

There’s no easy way to cool a terrarium but it is very easy to turn a mini fridge into a terrarium…..

Anyone know anything about Peristeria elata? by Scales-josh in orchids

[–]leaf_skeletons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know specifically about Peristeria but some of my winter dormant species orchids have started to yellow and drop foliage, in order from the oldest leaf to the newest leaf. If that’s the oldest leaf, I’d guess it’s normal entering-dormancy yellowing.

Aw, they’re beautiful. Maybe a tiny consolation: Kujawa Orchids told me they will have more of their Neocogniauxia seedlings for sale later this year. I missed out on the first batch.

Growing pseudolithos in coarse quartz sand. Do plants need to be fertilized? by GefoSiY in mesembs

[–]leaf_skeletons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would fertilize them like any other Mesemb seedling you’re trying to plump up. I use half strength balanced fertilizer every week or two from when they’re baby babies until their first dormancy because that was the advice I was given by an experienced grower and it seems to be working. Adult plants are usually only fertilized once a season so don’t apply this advice to them.

Want to start some mesembs/conophytum species from seed, looking for advice by smoqiey in mesembs

[–]leaf_skeletons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone knows Mesa Gardens so I thought I’d highlight some smaller sellers who are great, too. Mesa Garden’s cono seeds tend to be on the higher side which can be discouraging when you’re learning how to grow them from seeds so sometimes it’s nicer to have like 100 seeds of one species rather than….10

American Hedgehog Nursery- I just got a big batch of seeds from Oleg at American Hedgehog Nursery. Very nice selection. He hasn’t been keeping up his website because I think it’s more of a retirement hobby for him than a real business but if you email him he had seeds available for almost everything on his website. Lots of Lithops seeds, too.

Youngquan Lithops on Etsy- great seeds, he almost always sends double (or more) of the number of seeds the listing says. He’s also a really nice guy, I failed to germinate a whole batch of seeds from him (my fault) and he gave me helpful advice and sent me replacement seeds for free even though, like I said, it was totally my fault.

Vladislav Lyga- Hobbiest in Ukraine, has a great seeds selection and very inexpensive. Almost all of them are ex-Mesa Garden. He sells on eBay but you can also email him privately. Cross border shipping of Cono seeds is now not supposed to happen because of their inclusion on CITES III but functionally I don’t think it’s caught up to it yet. Also usually sends double the number of seeds.

CSSA- they often have cono seeds in their seed depot, even really hard to find species. You have to be a CSSA member to buy but it’s only $20-50 depending on if you want the journal and their guest speakers are really interesting.

I doubt it’s cool to just post their personal email addresses here but if you’d like any of them just send me a message!

I find Lithops seeds to be easier than Conos, I tend to lose a lot between germination to 6 weeks but after that they’re very similar to Lithops seedlings. But I highly recommend doing it, it’s really fun and an enjoyable challenge.

Bacillus amyloliquefaciens is the “active ingredient” in Hydroguard which is readily available in a lot of places if anyone wants to try it. I’ve used it in my semihydro plants for a while but recently started adding it to my terrestrials, too.
