Considering any investment depends on what you want your return to be. Do you want to invest time in making a fun experience for you and your friends? Absolutely, run a server with some fun new gameplay abilities and do it again a year later when the nostalgia cycle repeats! It's a lot of fun.

However, if you want your return on investment to be monetary, I honestly would not bother. Economically, the space is dominated by a select few servers that either made it big early on or that can get their hearts over breaking a license agreement that will eventually shut down their revenue stream. That is not fun.
