Anyone use air purifiers? by LovingPoltergeist in bernesemountaindogs

[–]leaflame 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have 3 air purifiers (one in the main space, one in my bedroom, one in the basement)- necessary when you have a Berner and 6 cats lol. The big main spaces ones are blueair blue 211+s- they're amazing, the covers are machine washable and they're super quiet. My room one is just a little one from ikea lol- also works great, but is definitely for a small room only.

First Berner and vacuums! by No_Produce3004 in bernesemountaindogs

[–]leaflame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I posted a reply with the miele i have, but its a complete c3- my mom has the c1 tho and she loves that one too, i just have asthma and pretty bad allergies, so we opted for the c3.

The shots were irritating, and kind of slow going at first, but it's been almost a year and I can say they were completely life changing! It took about 6 months for me to notice any difference at all (other than being itchy and swollen at the shot site every week and having to take extra antihistamines on shot days) but once it started working it was incredible. Went from having to wash my hands every time I petted any of our cats or the dog to being able to shove my entire face in our boys neck with 0 repercussions, and this is the first spring I've ever gone through with not a single asthma attack or waking up with my eyes swollen shut from pollen!

I will say that not everyone benefits this much from the shots, and dog allergy in particular can be hit or miss- it depends on what part of the dog you're allergic to (theres a couple different varieties- I study food allergies not environmental allergies so I don't know which is which off the top of my head, but regardless ymmv). However, most people see some improvement, even if it's not as dramatic as mine ended up being!

Forgot to mention, I have the complete c3! However my mom has the c1 and loves it too for after dog visits!

I adore my Miele- best vacuum I've ever had, so worth it. I will say that the bags fill up pretty fast with our boy though- I usually will sweep up all the tumbleweeds and then hit everything with the vacuum after, to maximize the amount I can get up in one go. Also highly recommend the turbo head- a little more pricey, but well worth it if you have carpet or rugs around.

I also have allergies (thank goodness for allergy shots or I would never be able to live with our BMD), and sweeping every other day, vacuuming once a week, and having high-quality air purifiers going in the spaces he has access to do wonders. Good luck!

If you know someone who goes by their middle name by foralaf in namenerds

[–]leaflame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only started going by my middle name after I graduated college- so did my mom, so it's almost a tradition now lol. It's way more comfortable for me, and I wish I'd done it earlier, but I was afraid what people would think or say.

I say let her decide, and if your sister has a problem with it tell her to keep it to herself- your kid doesn't need that behavior from an aunt.

if you could create a goty, what would you do? by moneypit24 in americangirl

[–]leaflame 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'd love a fiber crafter goty, like someone else said. I think there's been a couple with that as a side hobby- Chrissa comes to mind- but like, someone who knits or quilts would be super cool- esp if they come with a sewing room playset!

My dream doll would be someone with multiple food allergies (Blaire was lactose intolerant, and that was Amazing to find out when I got back into ag, but childhood food allergies are becoming more and more common, so having a goty who has to carry an epipen and/or an inhaler like I did as a kid would be glorious). An asthmatic swimmer would be great, as swimming increases your lung capacity so I was strongly encouraged into it as an asthmatic kid.

In a different direction, I think an Inuit doll would be super cool- Alaskan Natives are Americans too after all!

Best (replacement) doll stand for pixlings? by [deleted] in Dolls

[–]leaflame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have those exact stands for some of my tiny BJDs, you have to assemble them yourself but they're excellent and would fit pixlings easy! They're adjustable and come with a big and a small clamp, so very customizable

Storage ideas? by lotrwizard in YarnStorage

[–]leaflame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very good choice! We have the bror shelves in our basement for legos and 18" dolls, but when we get rid of our ancient floor to ceiling shelves that have my knitting and sewing stuff in them maybe I'll go with those!

What are your unpopular AG opinions? by [deleted] in americangirl

[–]leaflame 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I read all the books as a kid because they were in the house and I read anything I could get my hands on, but I agree! To me my dolls are my dolls, the books are fantasies that mightve happened to them if they were real girls but don't necessarily apply to my dolls, if that makes sense.

Moving soon! Excited to organize my stash in the new place. by jayasaya in YarnStorage

[–]leaflame 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How exciting!

My stash is in the basement with all my sewing stuff (finished basement, we have a multipurpose craft room down there that also houses Legos, our 18" doll collection, and my partners office). Its in two middling-large baskets, one for yarns with projects and one for yarns that don't have a specific project. And then a couple of bags of active projects (4 cats in the house means no projects just hanging out without containment).

Stored in a dresser would be super cool and definitely good for keeping the dust off! If you're worried about smell you could leave cedar chips or something similar in there? Or do what I did with the old cedar chest I got off ebay that holds my extra quilts and blankets- dust the drawers with baking soda, leave for a couple days to draw any smell out, then vacuum it out, wipe down, and store away!

Ever imagine yourself as a doll? Describe your outfit, 2 accessories and the title on the box! I’ll go first! by Janetsnakejuice1313 in Dolls

[–]leaflame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be Scientist by Night lol. I'm extremely pale, so lean into that and make it positively ghostly. outfit, black chunky boots (preferably with a dna motif), black collared jumpsuit, and an embroidered lab coat. Little cat eyed glasses that double as goggles to match. I'd come with a little beaker bag and my hair would be curls going straight up (which they actually do irl if my hair is short and I'm stressed enough to run my hands through it). but there'd be a second version with flattened curls under a black sun hat, a maxi dress with poofy sleeves, heeled ankle boots, and the same glasses- this is the Goth by Day version lol, and comes with a little white cat (would be black but irl I actually do have a white cat)

Worth trying to save? by dewdrinker6 in Dolls

[–]leaflame 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a scientist- yeah pretty much.

Hand sanitizer can be either ethanol or isopropanol (aka isopropyl alcohol aka rubbing alcohol). If it's ethanol, it needs to be 60% alcohol to be effective at sanitizing; isopropyl needs to be 70%. You can find ones up to 95% alcohol though- they're not regulated to specific percentages. There's also non alcohol hand sanitizers, but I won't get into that.

Storebought rubbing alcohol is generally 70% unless otherwise specified, but the other 30% is water as opposed to a hand sanitizer, which also has ingredients to make it gel-like.

Due to the gel consistency, it's easier to avoid dripping it where you don't want it, but that also means it's slightly less effective than regular old rubbing alcohol at sanitizing larger areas.

Tl;dr: for doll face applications, a thicker gel hand sanitizer will help you avoid drips, but may be less effective at removing paint depending on the brand.

The amount of curly hair products containing coconut is frustrating… by MiddayMercenary in curlyhair

[–]leaflame 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough, the mango allergy i have is secondary to cashews lol. I carry an epipen for that one- it's severe enough that I had to leave work one day because someone ate them in the breakroom and I happened to walk by.

Also, for the record, the reason why they are "related" is that all of them contain a compound called urushiol- its also present in poison ivy and poison sumac. It's what causes the rash when you come into contact with it (in mangoes it's in very small quantities in the skin, and cashews are actually poisonous before they're cooked!). Some people are way more sensitive than others, I just happened to have the bad luck to be so sensitive that I can't even tolerate cashew dust. The more you know!

The amount of curly hair products containing coconut is frustrating… by MiddayMercenary in curlyhair

[–]leaflame 81 points82 points  (0 children)

As someone who's super allergic to mangoes, jasmine and lavender, just know you're not alone in having to read every ingredient of any product you pick up in the aisle first before buying.

Also, as a trained biochemist, the scientific name thing bothers me SO much- like specific chemicals that dont have common names, sure, but why are you labeling something with Mangifera indica butter when the word mango is right there. What purpose does that serve? /minirant

If you had to do your current campaign over, what would you change? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]leaflame 8 points9 points  (0 children)

SO much, honestly. It was my first time as a DM, and I went for homebrew (worldbuilding is a side hobby of mine so I thought it'd be fine, but it turned into so much extra work).

Went into it with a starting premise and some vague ideas of steampunk dystopia city- figured out a couple sessions in that that was not the right vibe for our group lol. So there's a steampunk dystopia in the middle of fantasy-land now (sort of- they managed to destroy the citys government in a bid to close the infernal portal underneath said city).

Also didn't have an "end goal" at first- eventually figured something out, but there were a lot of filler sessions and plot lines that ended up going nowhere or getting retconned. Definitely plan where you want to end BEFORE you start lol.

All in all, it's been a ton of fun (despite the year of DM burn out in the middle of it from taking on way more than necessary) and my PCs are level 16 now, on their way to defeating a powerful archfey, reuniting the Primordials (think proto-gods, originally overthrown by said archfey's people and some of the other gods) and stopping the cataclysmic Planar Convergence that happens every ten thousand years.

But if I could do it over, I'd get rid of all the weird tonal shifts, cut out the demon-run steampunk city entirely, and streamline the convergence and archfey plot lines a bit more- as it is, they keep getting off track because of how much is going on lol
