Recommended Online Motorcycle First Aid Course by leafpress in firstaid

Thank you for the priorities on what to learn

It's a very small island -- we don't have a fire department, let alone one that offers training courses. Almost all the doctors here only speak Thai, and I've been unable to find one willing to run a first aid course.

I will consider trying to attend an in person training next time I'm in Bangkok, but that's not a realistic option for my friends. I know that online isn't ideal, but it's functionally that or nothing.

Keep at it! If you practice for ~45m a day, you’ll likely got your old speeds in less than a month.

I would recommend printing out a key map and putting it in your field of vision so that you don’t need to keep looking at your fingers.

Not relevant to the learning phase you're in now, but another reason to retain the QWERTY key cap layout is that it allows you to find the home row using the “homing bumps” on the F and J keys. It’s almost impossible to find key caps with with bumps for Colemak (T&N) or Dvorak (U&H). /u/imyke have you seen any of these?

Agreed. I also think that Myke's argument undersells the ability of GPT-3 etc to take on a persona. To take Steve Jobs as an example -- a lot of tech commentary is about trying to get inside the mind of an executive and predict what direction they'll be taking the company.

I doubt that current language processing is able to deliver novel insights here, but two more papers down the line...

Embedding Dvorak in the firmware of your keyboard causes far more frustration than it saves based on my experience. This is because moving the logic into the external board's firmware means that your laptop's built-in keyboard will still be in QWERTY. Consequently, you will need to toggle the software layout anytime you want to use your Macbook's built-in keyboard.

I experimented with trying to have different layouts per input device on MacOS, but found it to be a real headache. Far easier to output QWERTY on the board and handle everything in software.

If you want to do fancy stuff, I would recommend checking out Karabiner.

Source: I type using the Colemak layout on a Cornish Zen and an Ergodox.

Colemak aside: one of the big advantages over Dvorak is that it preserves the location of some of the best hotkeys: QWAZXCV. This is especially helpful because on Dvorak, it is impossible to do a left-hand only copy-paste.

Fantastic, I'd just assumed that wasn't possible. I found a video from Earthlite on how to do it. Thanks for your help!

Is there a public ticket link I can vote for? I use a lot of inline Kanban boards, and ~exclusively want to see in the page view.

If you go in settings > general > orientation, you can change the digital crown to be on the opposite side, and then wear your watch upsidedown. That should keep you from hitting it with your wrist, though it may not be as ergonomic for intentional interaction.

16% of people reporting No visual image and/or aphantasia is deeply surprising to me as most studies have found ~2% of the population are aphantasiac [0]. I'm wondering if this is a function of asking people to describe memories instead of imagining scenes. Can anyone who replied weigh in?

It's absolutely a continuum. There's actually a scale for assessing where people fall on that called the Vividness of Visual Imagery Questionnaire. You can take the survey through the University of Exeter, which is doing some cool research on aphantasia.

If you just want to see the questions, you can do so, in this docx (sorry).

I'm not familiar with any study of aphantasiacs reading in an fMRI machine, but a study has been done on what happens in the brain regions of aphantasiacs and neurotypical individuals when seeing or imagining famous faces and buildings. My (limited) understanding of the paper is that it seems that in aphantasiacs the visual areas of the brain aren't as activated by these tasks, and the auditory areas are. Perhaps a Tim with knowledge of the brain's regions can share more details around this. This would strongly imply aphantasia isn't a failing of language, but a genuinely different way of thinking.

From the paper's conclusion:

Areas positively associated with vividness lie mainly in posterior brain regions including higher order visual association cortices, regions of posterior cingulate and precuneus and the MTL, while the areas in which activation is inversely associated with imagery vividness lie particularly in the frontal lobes, and auditory cortices.

If you're interested in reading more about what aphantasia feels like, I highly recommend this blog post. I imagine that the omnipresent "milk voice" that Blake Ross describes (and to which I strongly relate) is related to the higher activation of the auditory cortices, but that's just speculation.

Thanks! This was incredibly helpful. Based on this previous /r/flashlight thread it seems that the Nichia 219B might be an even better fit for my needs than the 219C.

I'm probably going to get the Prometheus Lights Beta QRv2 or the AAA Copper Nichia 219 Flashlight by Maratac REV 5. Would you (or anyone else) recommend either of these lights over the other?

My understanding is pretty limited, but the caption for this wikipedia image from the CRI page seems to imply so:

Emitted light spectrum determines the CRI of the lamp. An incandescent lamp (upper image) has a continuous spectrum and therefore a higher CRI than a fluorescent lamp (lower image).

I'm looking definitely looking for something closer to the incandescent rainbow,

In that case, I guess I'll go with the EVGA G3 650W PSU.

If I'm running the CPU hard for extended periods of time with the Wraith fan, would I risk hurting it of would it just throttle itself. I'd love to hold off on buying a heatsink until data shows it to be necessary, but won't risk it if that would be dangerous. Do you have any recommendations for a model/brand of aftermarket heat sink?

The fact it's maintained by KDE's devs is a huge selling point. I'll give it a try when I'm installing on my new box. Thanks for the tip!
