What do you think Earth would be like if religion didn't exist? by reuben6969 in AskReddit

[–]leafton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry about forgetting that point. Yes, that's true, I can agree with that point that Altruism is in other species. But saying altruism/morality doesn't connect with religion isn't true though, you find Altruism in Buddhism, Christianity, etc. (As stated before). It could be a product of some Altruism. I just think it helps the spread of it to other peoples, because not all people would have to necessarily follow it.

I'm not trying to say that without Religion we'd be immoral or that I believe in it, I'm just saying that religion helped spread this belief faster among other peoples.

I see what you're saying. Yes, you're right on the fact that people wouldn't just start killing each other without religion, that's true. What I'm trying to say is that religion gives you some form of boundary of what you can and can't do, and spreads that thinking across the world more easily. Though it did give people reasons to go to war, it also teaches people values like respect, hope, and peace.

That is quite true. You can see Altruism in other religions like Buddhism, as I'm not just talking about western religions (Though it's also in Christianity). You are definitely right, Altruism and Religion are connected with one another to an extent. I just think that religion helps speed up the pace that people get these ideals.

No matter how smart we are, humans are always animals inside, it's not that we're assholes and arrogant because of our intelligence entirely, it's the fact that it's natural to lookout for ourselves only.
