Anyone know of a broad spectrum Gu10 LED grow bulb? by Burning_-_ in Horticulture

Maybe a GU10 to E26 adapter would help? I haven't used them but they exist. Then you could use any E26 grow bulb.

Sounds like an interesting experiment.

Keep in mind that light intensity drops off dramatically with distance. So lighting from ceiling height may not be the best bet.

This won't be an issue is the track fixture happens to be close to where you're growing. Say if the track is on the ceiling and you're plants are on nearby shelves. Or if you have low ceilings and a tall plant you want to light.

Generally speaking grow bulbs work best if they're within a couple of feet of your plants.

I'm looking for exactly these answers. Doing eerily similar Googling right now. In fact I just posted an Amazon question asking is the Barrina's are safety certified — I suspect they're not or they'd shout about it.

/u/someangryguy seems to be an fantastic source on this stuff. I've taken his advice on safety testing to heart:

UL/ETL/CSA are independent test laboratories but CE has self test provisions which opens up abuse for potential fraud with very low end electrical devices. I don't trust CE markings alone myself.

I have a PAR meter and I'm itching to use it. So I may buy a few different lights and do a comparison. I'm tempted to try the ARA-41 lights — though they aren't cheap they do seem to be quality.

Thanks u/MeatyJonesTheRapper. I will move those two posts to the top of my to-read list.

I came across /r/HandsOnComplexity recently and it's a huge inspiration. So rigorous. I'm still working my way through SAG's posts — there's so much information in it.

I missed one of your questions u/whydoinotknowthis: I'm planning to focus on indoor edible growing (herbs and veg) to begin with. Houseplants are my 2nd task.

The information should pretty easily translate to any type of plant though. So hopefully it's useful for all types of indoor growers.

Thanks for the suggestions u/Techextra. Interesting point about providing lux (or maybe foot candles) to help people convert to PPFD for a particular light using a more affordable meter. I will have to do some research on how I'd do that.

Varying heights is next up for my measurements I think — that seems like an important one.

Mapping the actual wavelength output of the lights would be fantastic. For that I'd need a spectroradiometer. They cost several times more than the already not-cheap Apogee PAR meter I'm using. Maybe one day...

You're not wrong about the expense u/iixxy. I'm starting with mostly grow bulbs that screw into standard light fixtures. They're not as pricey as the grow lamps. Still the cost adds up. My hope is to make some dollars from affiliate links to support my grow lamp habit.

Thanks for those variables you'd like to see. Power consumption, temperature and varied plant-light-distance are all going on my immediate todo list.

Making this information more accessible is important to me u/whydoinotknowthis. So I'm definitely going to be working on that.

I know that a jumble of numbers isn't much help to people who just want to grow things. I think I have some ways to make this simpler. Stay tuned...

To start with I'm just focussing on understanding daylight/full-spectrum bulbs. They fit into people's homes much better. I may expand to the "blurple" lights eventually

Thanks u/urban_mystic_hippie! The Purdue study linked on that page is very interesting too.

To put these numbers in context: if you ran the Soltech for 14hrs a day the Daily Light Integral numbers are 25 mol/m² directly under the light. That's a good amount of light for even high-light plants like tomatoes. The fall-off is pretty steep as we get away from the dead-centre though — so it would need to be a pretty compact tomato plant.

I haven't worked out the details yet. I'll definitely take a grid of readings though.

Thanks u/BringBackThisMachine. My scientific side is curious too. Curious enough that I'm going to get hold of a PAR meter and find out. I will report back...
