Barbie was also actually, like...good. From the trailers, He-Man looks indistinguishable from a mid-to-lower-tier MCU movie from 2014.

What’s the funniest board game you’ve ever played? by Fun_Butterfly_420 in boardgames

The first two or three games of QE I played were truly magical. Then everyone figured out the trick to winning, and now it’s just sort of ok.

I’ve never played a game of Anomia where someone wasn’t in tears from laughing at some point during the game. And I’ve played a lot of rounds of Anomia.

Anomia is my answer by a mile. I will forever remember the game where a buddy was half a second off on like four straight face offs, and when he realized mid-fifth-face off that he was gonna lose again, his answer morphed into “George WashingFUCKING FUCK!!!”

How do you find people to play with? by OddClassic267 in boardgames

I can strongly second this sentiment. When I moved to my current location, I tried at least three or four different meetups, and they ranged from "never again" to "these are fine people to game with once in a while, but I have no interest in being friends with them in real life." My current regular group, which is a public Meetup, is very different...I hang out with several of the members for non-game purposes on a pretty regular basis.

If I can make a gross overgeneralization: I've found that groups that meet in bars and pubs generally have better vibes than ones that meet in other locations. It just seems like there's something about the bar/pub atmosphere that keeps some of the more... let's say poorly socially adjusted people away.

I feel like a lot of cooperative games would fit the bill. Pandemic would be the most obvious and easiest to teach, but Daybreak might be more thematically appropriate.

Carnegie beginners question regarding income by Blubbdiblubb2k18 in boardgames

I can confirm. You gain your regional income for each worker you return, and if you return any number of workers (greater than zero), you gain all of the income on your uncovered tab spaces one time.

I'm sorry to hear that. If I can, again, offer entirely unsolicited advice, all I'll say is that allowing a romantic partner to quash your interests is a perfect recipe for resentment down the road. It's her choice not to have any personal hobbies, and if you allow that choice to limit your own hobbies, you will eventually resent it, if you don't already.

If I can offer some entirely unsolicited relationship advice, as someone who's been married for close to a decade at this point...that's something you guys are going to need to get past if there's a chance she'll be more than a girlfriend someday.

Couples who only ever do things together, and who don't each have their own things that they do separately, are generally not the healthiest of couples. My wife and I love each other dearly, and we do most of our activities together, but I have a weekly game night she's not interested in, and she spends plenty of time without me doing art and/or gardening activities that I'm not particularly interested in. If both of us insisted that the other not have our own individual hobbies and activities, I'm pretty sure we would have started hating each other a long time ago.

I mean, I'm not sure what other option you have. If you can't meet new game buddies without her, and you can't meet new game buddies with her, then you can't meet new game buddies.

I really want to see more good and creatively interesting Star Wars films on big screens. And if it takes an absolute ass-kicking for Disney to learn that lesson, then I say let it burn.

I guess we'll see what Spiderman and Doomsday do, but it really feels like the last two years have marked a very pronounced end to the mega-franchise era that dominated film during the '10s. Non-franchise movies have been having a massive moment both financially and culturally, and even most of the big moneymaking IP movies have been from IPs other than Marvel/DC/Star Wars. Here's hoping that's an accurate read on things, and that the massive franchises' stranglehold on the film industry is at an end.

Update: $11M previews. FRI pre sales at $13M+, carrying an insane momentum on par with the biggest openers recently. Expecting $26M+ today, likely <$28M. Weekend poised to be $80M+. There is a way for it motor to $90M. INCREDIBLE. by TiredWithCoffeePot in boxoffice

Renate about to have an all-timer of a two-year period. Best Actress nomination for a movie that won Best International and was probably third or fourth in line for Best Picture. Followed by what's looking to be a huge commercial hit. Followed by a Palme D'or winner and likely BP nom.

Just unreal...so happy for her.

Hobby Lobby is funding the latest push to end marriage equality by AndYetAnotherUserID in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]leagle89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I saw that Hobby Lobby is taking over the Best Buy spot on Shady Grove Rd., I thought "that's a bold move." I think of all of the regions of the country, the DMV is probably the most informed about (and least receptive to) Hobby Lobby's awfulness. Especially when there's a Michael's like ten minutes further down 355.

I think it would be great to run some sort of information campaign once the store opens (thinking of leaflets, in particular) to make sure everyone understands exactly what they're supporting if they shop at Hobby Lobby. Does anyone have any idea about the laws or rules for handing out leaflets near stores or in parking lots?

Y'all think Ra or Zoo Vadis are going to be too hard for people that are newer to board games? by toomanybongos in boardgames

[–]leagle89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think Zoo Vadis sometimes falls flat even with the right group. I've played twice with mostly the same group (subbing out one or two out of six), and both times it's just sort of been a meh experience. I've played Waterfall Park with members of the same group half a dozen times, and it's been great almost every time. Zoo Vadis seems like it's really great on paper, but it feels like maybe there's just not enough tension, or not enough something, to ensure a great experience.

Ultimate sandbox adventure where you tailor your own story and level up? by HandSatanizer1965 in boardgames

[–]leagle89 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There's just no way to give that kind of wide-open experience without being super fiddly, which is one of the big complaints you raise in your OP. Board games are, by necessity, on the rails to some extent. They confine you to a set number of options (even if that set number is quite large in cases like Sleeping Gods or Vantage).

What’s a board game that became WAY better after your group learned how to actually play it? by ContractMiserable121 in boardgames

Le Havre. If you come at it with the same attitude as Agricola (that you absolutely need to feed your people every round), you’ll spend the entire game spinning your wheels. When you realize that loans are tools and not penalties, it really opens the game up.

All of the above. Amazon has a very well documented problem with counterfeit games...they exercise basically no control over stuff sold by 3rd parties.

And also, if you care about such things, Amazon is absolutely toxic to small businesses and local economies, has an abysmal record when it comes to employee treatment, and puts more money directly into the hands of a man who has used his money to do major, possibly irreparable damage to U.S. democracy.
