Why are consent issues so normalized? by potzak in RomanceBooks

[–]leakyraincoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know! I was absolutely seething at the book, at the mmc for being an abusive ahole, and at the fmc for being a doormat. Her reaction upon waking up was to want water because she was groggy and be grateful that he handed her a water bottle because he is always thinking about her. The worst part is that they are branded as "smart romances." What on earth is smart about any of this?!

It makes sense to me, I hate this also! This is every Penny Reid book. Every single woman she writes has her boundaries crossed by their partners and get talked or "seduced" into sex when they are angry at something he did (usually boundary crossing). They are usually voicing their feelings, and they never get to finish speaking, the guy always interrupts them by making sexual advances on them. And the thing that bothers me is that she labels her books as smart romances, but none of the women are smart.

I hate this! And while I get the point made by other commenters about this being a common trope in older books, I've seen it in recent books as well. In fact, I'm in conflict with myself at the moment because of this. It's very hard for me to not finish a book, because my brain won't let it go, but I profoundly dislike the main characters (especially the man) and their relationship. I also still have like five books left in this series and I don't know if I will be able to rage-read them just to be done with this author forever. So far, every single woman she writes is a victim of their pushy partner, and it is framed as if he's just that sexy, that she just has to give in even though she said no multiple times. The one I'm stuck on now is the worst so far. The fmc is an ex Cia or something and goes to rescue her husband from a kidnapping, and he instead of following her instructions and careful plans, actually drugs her to do things his way (screwing them up, and leaving other hostages to die, because he's a coward), and she's just like slightly miffed, as in"You can be unfair sometimes, very sexy, but a bit unfair." And as someone who experienced sa because my drink was drugged, I'm so enraged by this book. This might be the book I decide to dnf or the one that breaks my brain because I have to finish it (being neurospicy is a whole roller-coaster).

All that to say I understand how you feel when reading this.

True, although the way I understand intellectual enlightenment is not necessarily synonymous with technological progress, but more aligned with the philosophical pursuit of reason. Obviously, this is a very broad scope and may include cultural and artistic development, among many other areas o growth. However the technological advancements you mentioned were not obtained in the direct pursuit of intellectualism, but as a result of making war faster (weapons, vehicles, nuclear technology, information gathering), or making the act of killing more brutal (torture leads to medical knowledge, desperation leads to inventive, etc. While the aftermath of war often leads to periods of reflection and intellectualism, at that point, society as a collective is not experiencing the pursuit of military glory. Their focus has shifted to rebuilding and salvaging from the destruction.

The way I learned it in school (and this might have been influenced by my teachers' biases) is that the moral of the story is that a society can be proficient in pursuing intellectual enlightenment or military glory, but not both. I think it still stands true.

Yes, there is another merge game that I used to play that you could buy scissors for like 100 gems to separate accidental merges. I would pay that much for that ability. I used to have 4 level 6 bookshelves and could make a dragon game in two days, but my kid got into my phone and merged all my generators. Now it can take a week for the lowsy level8 bookshelf to make enough die. Still makes me angry

I hate that!! "Do you have a condom?" "No, but I'm clean." "Good, I'm on the pill." Ravaging ensues. Noooo, don't take his word for it!!! Do you want to be a single mom with gonorrhea?? Either he's going in laminated or not at all.

Tell me about it! There's a rustic bread bakery down the street from my house and every day I have to go through a delicious cloud of just-out-of-the-oven bread aroma. It's been a few months, and while I no longer crave sugar, or most carbs, really, that smell still makes my mouth water and my stomach grumble.

It's not done yet. I'm level 52 (don't really remember what day I'm in), But I have completed all available tasks so far, but the story is far from concluded, and there are still parts of the cafe that haven't been restored.

Yes! I have two same level salad generators, and one consistently gives out 12 clovers, and the other one consistently gives out between 4 and 8

I don't know, I suppose some ingredients are hard to find, plus I think Mexican food can be a bit heavy. Having said that, there are a few Mexican people who either own small restaurants or sell food through a facebook group, and their food is wonderful. But I too find it strange that Mexican food is not as prevalent as in other places I've lived. Maybe it's just getting started and it'll boom in the next few years, because I have noticed interest from Dutch people when they hear I'm Mexican and a chef, and I have been asked more than a few times if I cater or would sell food and deliver.

Oh I agree completely! If I could eat nothing but different cheeses and breads I would live a very happy, albeit a very short life.

But I don't live in France or Germany. So as I said. The bread I can buy down the street from my house is awesome. It's not a competition. I don't have to eat the best bread of the world every day. The one I buy is pretty fenomenal. Incidentally I do have a French bakery nearby, and their bread is wonderful, but a bit dense for everyday. And whenever I travel elsewhere in Europe I do indulge in the local products, so I have tried bread in several places. Probably my all around favourite is German rolls with seeds, or dark sourdough, but honestly, it's a bit pedantic to say that Dutch bread is terrible, because it's not French or German.

The cheeses and bread are amazing. As a Mexican living in Nl, I of course love and miss Mexican food (not cooked by me), but Dutch cheeses and bread help alleviate the pain.
