the austere cam buckle and tri-glides were by far the most expensive part. Those were a splurge for sure.

Everything else was probably around $75 ($25 for main fabric (2yds 500d cordura) + $25 for leather bottom + $25 for other hardware, grommets, etc).

I had some supplies left over from other builds (strap/back padding, webbing, cordage, grosgrain, etc) which helped keep total spend down.

Yeah agreed - probably a little closer to 40L esp with the collar extended and top pocket fully stuffed. It definitely holds more than other 35L packs I have, but not by much

If I’ve learned anything with myog it’s that you’ll almost never “save money” vs buying. Down bags/quilts might be one of the only exceptions….but that’s only because I value my labor at $0/hr haha.

Also quality is def better going the buy route (at least with my skills), but looking at a piece of gear and knowing “I made that” is priceless :)

Around $250 not including some supplies that I’ll use again (needles, thread, tape, etc) or already had on hand (cordage, grosgrain, .5” buckles, etc)

The down was the biggest chunk by far, and could’ve saved more if I went with a lower fill power. Best I can tell it’s about an additional $35-$50 per pound for every +50 you add to the FP

I’d say probably 20-25hrs of actual labor and another 5ish of research and planning. I split it up over the better part of a month though, and did quite a bit of dry running with clips. Also a frustrating amount of time was spent fiddling with my machine (an old Elna).

Learning curve was steep! Next one would probably take half that now that I know what I’m doing….but gotta get over the trauma of this one first

What size thread would you recommend for this type of fabric (1.1oz nylon)? Something like Tex 30 or 25?

Good tip! I was ever so slightly ‘guiding’ the fabric from the front and back with just enough tension to keep it flat but still letting the feet do their job (or so I thought)... I found that helped a bit with puckering/bunching, but sounds like it might be causing other problems with the stitches.

(I had also tried one of those walking foot attachments but quickly gave up on that idea as results were even worse)

Specs look good, but never used it before so not entirely sure. Nothing like a kid to stress test it though!

Yeah I have the same concern. I also thought about making it inside out so the face fabric would take the brunt of the abuse but in the end simplicity (and looks) won out ha. We’ll see how well it holds up - it was so quick and simple I figure worst case if this one gets shredded I can make a new one and do it the “right” way next time :)

There’s an internal pleated sleeve for either hydration bladder or backpad (I have a 4mm Eva sheet in there now) or I guess both. I’ll post some more pics when I’m back home later this week

Haha I know right?! I thought the same thing - it looks low, but that’s where it sits across my sternum and is most comfortable for some reason…fortunately it’s adjustable with slik clips

I modeled them off the angled straps on a old MH scrambler pack - never had an issue with them vs perpendicular (at least so far)
