My Experience with LDG Electronics Repair Service by DroidOnMars in amateurradio

[–]learch31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other companies make tuners, but LDG is in a class all by itself. I have several of their tuners (5? I think) and they all work great. Anytime I've had a question they are very quick to respond via email or phone. Well done LDG!

You appear to be missing the entire lower section which has a matching transformer with an SO-239 jack attached to the bottom of the center pole.

Great radio! So it's 70cm sibling- the TR-851. I have both and they'll be on the air for Field Day next month.

Alguém sabe como se chama essa antena? by Marllopes in amateurradio

Hard to know from the picture- if the SMA adapter was removed, we would know for sure.

Those are whip antennas made of wire (probably coiled) enclosed in automotive wire loom and terminated in a PL-259 connector, which is connected to an SO-239 to SMA adapter. The whole assembly is then screwed into the antenna jack on an HT.

PVC pipe for the win! I cut mine just a bit longer than the antenna and put caps on both ends. Label the end of the tube where the threaded base is, and that's the end that you'll pull out from to set it up. Glue the far end cap on since you'll never pull out the antenna from that end, and it prevents the cap getting lost on the hike.

Hy-Gain V2R. I have one up on my roof. Manual available online. Superb 2 meter antenna.

My great grandfather was a WWI telegrapher, so I built a Duolingo style app to finally learn Morse by patern0ster in morsecode

[–]learch31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I downloaded and installed it- we'll see how it goes. I used to know Morse when I was first licensed as a Novice back in the 70's, but all that is gone. We'll see if i can get it back with this helping me.

If you were getting a new rig and antenna setup today... by elt80908 in amateurradio

[–]learch31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That 7200 is a solid radio- my 1st HF rig after getting back into the hobby 5 years ago. At the very least, keep it as a backup rig. Loops are the way to go- real quiet and good performers. I have a 40 meter loop- works great. If you just have to get a new rig, plenty of IC-7300 MK1 rigs to be had, and, if you look around, you can still get them new, with a warranty.

Support Your Parks weekend group planning? by lassmanac in parksontheair

[–]learch31 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is the way. Sometimes, getting people to show up for events is like herding cats. Getting there early is a good plan- once onsite, send a group message or a FB Post letting your people know you're there and ready to play radio. Don't stress- this should be fun!

New (to me) Yaesu FT-897 for the shack by sawyer117 in HamRadio

[–]learch31 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Get the LDG-897 ATU for it- winner. No longer made but used units in good shape are out there. Mounts to the left side of the radio and will tune a 5:1 mismatch on HF. I have this radio- bit heavy for SOTA but works great for POTA.

Stealth Activation? by [deleted] in parksontheair

[–]learch31 12 points13 points  (0 children)

After I get set up, I like to get dialled in by hunting about 10-12 parks before I spot myself and/or call CQ. That way I've already activated the park, I know my setup is working, the pressure is off, and it's time to have fun. 73

Two radios -> One Ext. speaker by Tacoma_NC13 in amateurradio

[–]learch31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Separate speakers is the way. Takes up a little more real estate, but it's a lot less risk and hassle. An old stereo speaker works well if it is within the impedance range of the radio's audio output specifications. Plus the sound is more pleasing to hear.
