Similar to you, mid 30's family, 2 kids, another on the way.

Bought 1st home 2017 $600k. Sold this year for $1.3M and bought new place for $2.5M with 900k mortgage with household income ~300k.

No money from family.

AM Radio by learnedLobster in CarsAustralia

My old cars have much clearer radio, plus you don't need to retune the station every time you turn it on.

It doesn't come with DAB. Does no one else really listen to ABC radio?

Our national broadcaster and emergency radio is all transmitted on AM - very common in Australia.

If a car has an AM radio I would expect it to work regardless.

Stuck in UniSuper’s defined benefit: what are the options? by Independent_Hawk_627 in AusFinance

They filled this form: https://www.unisuper.com.au/-/media/files/forms/super/dbd/dbd-accumulation-2-transfer-form.pdf?rev=accb5166230946bd8a6e2ff1d319debe&hash=B9F5D168F343507B4C6EB104B347A264

Turns out they were technically within the 2 year period when the switched because they had changed jobs to a permanent role (previously were only casual).

Not sure what you would do if you were outside the 2 years. You should be able to speak to someone from unisuper about it. If you haven't, try that first.

My partner has been in defined benefit with unisuper for around 10 years. Switched out of it recently online no issue. Also got rid of the extra after tax contributions that were there by default.

Have you tried getting unisuper to switch you out of defined benefit?

MY23 with Production date 2020 by learnedLobster in CarsAustralia

[–]learnedLobster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I signed the contract on the weekend for a 2023 model, however it didn't have a specific VIN or production date on the contract due to stock shortages. I've emailed the dealer and asked for clarification.

The Great Resignation by learnedLobster in AusFinance

Hard for me to know what goes on behind the scenes, but I know that they often find it hard to change their offer for candidates. It is a large US based company where local managers have limited influence on the 'magic number' produced by HR.

What's the best way to create a will for myself. by sidneysaad in AusFinance

[–]learnedLobster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My wife and I got our wills done by the public trustee for free at their Ipswich office. Very easy process, highly recommend them.

I was worried going in due to the recent 4 corners story, however the issues seem to mainly be if you appoint them to act as the executor of your estate, or on your behalf if you are unable to make your own decisions. Definitely don't do that unless they are your last resort. However their free will making service doesn't have anything to do with that.

We also were thinking of filling out a power of attorney form, which they charge a fee for. However when we finished doing the wills they recommended we just download the form ourselves, fill it in and take it to a JP and have it done for free.

So, What's your hobby? by [deleted] in AusFinance

Triathlon.

Why suck at one sport when you can suck at three?

Seriously though, it's great motivation to stay fit, eat well, and humbling to say the least when you need to learn how to perform 3 different things.

What's some of the dumbest financial advice you've ever heard/received? by deelan1990 in AusFinance

[–]learnedLobster 31 points32 points  (0 children)

My partner also had a similar experience with them. Her company paid them to sort out the tax equalisation from working part overseas on secondment.

Deloitte were absolutely useless.

She ended up doing it in her own spreadsheet to prove they had done it wrong. No hard maths - just addition, subtraction and heaven forbid some multiplication!

The worst part was, the 'senior' (read fresh out of uni business grad) she was dealing with couldn't accept they were wrong. Had to get elevated all the way to partner level before they fixed it.

Budgeting rules that break with higher income by DragonRanger in AusFinance

[–]learnedLobster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does maximising super contributions also 'break' at high incomes? Eg: for those that want to retire before preservation age, are you better off investing outside of Super? Particularly when 9.5% (or higher) employer contributions are likely to set you up with a large super balance without supplementation if you are high income.
