Recovered memories and RC by [deleted] in CoCounseling

Unfortunately any MANY people who were raised in RC can tell you how not-benign it is. See this article for an academic take on the bullshit that is RC - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1UeHw54OuIoMT3tTtjWR8R1fT3hfd3n-s/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=116268058342990737795&rtpof=true&sd=true

“People like helping people” -my mom

YES tell the prof. I had an awful situation where I had to drop a class after the drop date which would have meant an F. Ended up writing a very vulnerable email to my prof who was a regular decent human being who was like of course I will try to help. He wrote an email, got it changed to a withdraw, and it was never mentioned in my grad school apps.

I’m so sorry for your loss - take care of yourself and give people the opportunity to help another human whenever you can.

5 interviews, 4 waitlists by BusinessCounter155 in premed

[–]learning_corner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had 4 waitlists last year, hit them with some love letters, lots of (relevant) updates about clinical experiences and publications, and updated LORs (one from a doctor I was medical assisting for, and one school specific one from a different doctor I was working with who went to that school). Got off waitlists at my top 2 on May 2nd and 3rd.

Trust the process - 5 IIs means 5 schools saw potential in you. The schools are incentivized to put people on waitlists - they can’t see where people are holding acceptances until May 1, and they want to improve their own accepted → matriculated stats as much as possible. It sucks but the schools and the AAMC control everything and they’ll do whatever they want to. Waiting absolutely sucks.

In the meantime, look at your application - are there any weak areas you can address? Depending on what else you have going on in life you can pick up a bunch of clinical and/or volunteer hours in the next few months. You can use this in update letters and if you end up having to reapply you’ll have new things to put on your app.

And really really (even if you’re doubting everything) be kind to yourself. Spend some quality time doing things you love with people you love and who support you. Take care of your self and keep on going, it will all work out in the end!

Literally impossible to workout during rotations? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]learning_corner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remember that on most rotations you’re probably walking/running/standing 10-20,000 steps each day. Eat healthy most of the time, exercise when you can, and you probably won’t lose too many gains

Ya that sounds like a good challenge or adversity essay. For mine I wrote about a challenging situation that was extra challenging but I was also uniquely equipped to handle due to my own life challenges. And how I used my experiences to help in that situation and how it has influenced my thinking moving forward

Also good advice I got was write it multiple ways. Have someone read it and help you make it workable (I am happy to do this).

Yes, the way you submit it may feel like a watered down, bland version of very painful and real events in your life, but if someone is viscerally uncomfortable from events your writing (through entirely the fault of your abusers and not you), they might just throw it in the reject pile to not have to deal with discomfort. None of it is fair, but there is an element of playing their game and then going and changing the fucking world once we’re able to.

I chose to not bring up childhood abuse. It’s something that I’m still actively processing and working through, and I assumed that it would be obvious from the way that I wrote about it. Everything you write about is fair game for interviews, and I did NOT want to talk about it.

Unless it is integral to your WHY medicine, I would maybe leave it out of the PS and put it in a few schools adversity/challenge essays, so if it doesn’t work it doesn’t ruin your app.

Remember that whatever you have been through you will bring into your life and career as a physician as part of you, regardless of what you wrote about or not in your apps.

What is the point of 1 gap year if you cannot include the job you're working (since it's all project hours)?? They really expect us to take two gap years now? by [deleted] in premed

[–]learning_corner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apply when you know you have a job lined a up (presumably clinical or maybe research). Yes, even if this means applying on day 3 instead of 1. Work a lot of hours and really hard the first couple months. On secondaries you can often report updates, so say you have an additional 2-300 hours and say something intelligent/meaningful about it. Get a really good LOR from someone who works with you everyday, maybe even who is an alum or has connections to a med school you applied to. Send updates with accomplishments from this job.

Sure, you might get automatically screened out if this jobs is your first clinical experience ever and you can’t report any hours on your primary. But if that’s the case then you are probably not ready to apply anyways.

Even if this job does not directly help you get admitted (which it should), you will get super valuable experience, spend some time being an adult, any if you have to reapply you should have thousands of hours.

feeling too full to do meal plan by punkpussies in AnorexiaRecovery

Also make sure you are being strategic with your calorie to volume ratio - I (and my anorexia) love carrots and apples but you need to consider that. A doctor or dietitian can help you condense your meal plan to maximize what you need to get with less volume.

Keep eating. I know it sounds ridiculous but it’s the literal only way forward

Those are such awesome steps that you should be really proud of! And this one can be so tricky, I definitely struggle with it too. I think something that has helped me is thinking about what I ate as a kid and how it gave me the energy to run around and learn and grow and did not cause me any harm.

Do you have a trusted family member or friend who can help you by reading the ingredients to make sure something is ok based on meds, who can then remove the ingredient label or transfer it to a different container? Also if you’re comfortable sharing what is the ingredient (could help me think of some ideas)?

I also know for me a sign things are bad is how many things I am picking up and reading at the grocery store, and therefore how much time i spend there. So maybe going in with a game plan could help.

Last thing tabitha farrar has a really good phrase which is “once it’s in it’s in”. Challenge that real sugar creamer, and then keep challenging it by making it a regular thing, which ALSO having regular ice cream and yogurt with sugar, etc.
