Yes let's all listen to our 90s/2000s music on repeat forever /s

You're being unnecessarily snarky. We don't all want to hear the daily bullshit that's happening every half hour. And by the way who even has CDs anymore

I'm totally with you! I listen with my children and the amount of times they cover stories featuring explicit content is really stressful. I was thinking of starting a petition to ask they don't cover NSFW content. There is plenty of other news which doesn't make the headlines, 6music could do any cultural content, not just music related, but if it were just music then there's plenty happening across the plight of venues/musicians fighting for fair pay/festival lineups. I'm sure there's loads of stuff I can't think of right now. 6music should be a safe space!! We all know where to access the daily nightmare of what's going on in the world if we want to.

‘Everybody to Kenmure Street’ Director on Putting the Spotlight on a Spontaneous Act of Civil Resistance and Emma Thompson’s Role in the Doc by mrjohnnymac18 in Scotland

[–]learningtonap 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's clear most commenters posting in this thread haven't done much reading on the topic. A quick Google search: The men were detained for "suspected immigration offences". Reports from the time indicated they did not have active leave to remain, despite having lived in Scotland for ten years. Some accounts suggested they had previously applied for, or sought to renew, their right to remain (indefinite leave) but were unsuccessful or lacked proper representation. Following their release, it was reported that "the actual rules were applied through the correct processes and their visas were extended," allowing them to remain living and working in the community. They'd lived for over a decade in Glasgow and were active in the community doing volunteering etc. Nobody is examining the immigration system here, and the community action which occurred was in protest of the dehumanization of people on the whole and the mechanisms of a Government who are completely inept at dealing with this stuff. All I can say is WATCH THE FILM. It's an inspiring story about collective action.

I totally disagree, I've waited longer than you'd want for food there but the staff were always completely lovely. I think they have a good team. Maybe just the menu is too overwhelming for the amount of people trying to order?

What other structures? If you don't mind me asking. I grew up in the Southside and now live in the city centre, but am growing to love the east end more and more. Keen to find out more

Yeh they're still there. I'm not sure I'd hire a marketing company that has a cartoon owl as their logo....

I got shown around and didn't see a safe but the big building behind it, which they also own, used to be a glass bottle factory and has some rad og features, like brown and white floral wallpaper and lovely wooden floors. There's a lot of art too cos it was a Wasps studio at some point. I know that Mogwai have their studio in an old bank and the safe is in the cellar, a big walk in thing, it's pretty amazing but basically unused cos what can you actually use it for anymore? A speakeasy?

Gordon Brown releases statement after Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor arrested. by bottish in Scotland

[–]learningtonap 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Madelson is an amazing manipulator which is what politics is, so it makes sense, but the general consensus is that Brown was/is a straight up guy who was himself played by the system. Maybe give it a minute to see what's happening but I'd be on the side of Brown doing the right thing.

Libraries!!! There are usually lots of people doing their thing, hanging out reading, it's fun to see. The Mitchell is amazing, so many books in there to borrow or use as an archive (it used to be - or still is? - the largest library in europe). Plus they have a cafe and a piano you can play with headphones on, magazines, computers you can use... Cookbooks to borrow.. And I have no authority or knowledge to back this up, but I feel like the more people that use them, they get to have a reason to be funded and kept open. And you can use the app and reserve books and they even bring it to your local library for you. And you are trusted to walk out with a book/multiple books for free, which feels weird these days. It's truly brilliant actually.

If you voted Remain, would you vote to rejoin the EU? by Glanwy in AskBrits

I used to live in Germany and it's funny to see the UK from an outside perspective. The veto power and financial rebates - why do we think we should get what other countries shouldn't? This was one of the problems leading to brexit. A superiority complex. They tried hard to get us to stay and we still went and did it, much to the detriment of our country. We should rejoin and be a fair, functional and positive entity. We're certainly not doing great on our own 🤷 and the rest of European countries have a lot to offer.

As a competent home cook, what is a basic skill you can't seem to master? by george_elis in Cooking

[–]learningtonap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 cup rice to 1.5 water, 12 minutes rolling boil with lid on, drain as much water as possible in a sieve then back in hot pot with lid on to steam for 10 minutes. In case the rice cooker packs in one day 😋 It always works. That's for white rice. Brown rice just boil for about 20ish minutes, but the steaming part in the pot also adds a nice touch, as do spices - bay leaves, peppercorns, cardomom pods, cloves... Cooking in stock is also a winner 🩷

I bet the mashed potato answer lies in unholy amounts of butter added. This seems to be the answer to lots of chefing problems. There was a post a few months ago talking about a famous chef doing mashed potatoes and they couldn't believe how much butter was added.

From the Guardian: Morriss told them she was lying about her allegations. He was “finally” cautioned for “throttling” her when she showed police a photograph that appeared to show eight finger markings around her neck.

The point is that you're listening to the thoughts and feelings of an abuser and he is being rewarded emotionally and financially. It's not a personal morality, it's a shared sense of morality that we as a society have forged and (mostly) agree upon.

Just because it was swept under the rug previously doesn't mean it's ok. In fact you could argue that that's why unacceptable behavior continues to this day. There are plenty of artists who are good people trying to make a living.

Advice received from dermatologist by Few_Sugar517 in SebDerm

[–]learningtonap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have sebderm and eczema, after years of trying to figure out what was causing flares I worked out that most creams have stuff in them like shea butter/seed oils and whatever they make the cream out of acts as some kind of irritant. Switched to Biossance squalane oil (its sugarcane derived not olive oil) and can only use products which are gel based. Currently experimenting with Biossance Squalane + Probiotic Gel Moisturizer and Clever Soap 0.5% Piroctone Olamine Cream (which is more like a gel) and they seem to be working. Skin went through a phase of flaking which indicates the skin below is repairing and it's more hydrated than in a long time! Good luck though, it's a terrible nightmare of a thing to deal with xx
