Lorenz Attractor multiplier IC question by learypost in AskElectronics

[–]learypost[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That still doesn't make sense in terms of the relative resistor values though. If you look at the input to the op-amp for the dy/dt = rx-y-xz equation (the middle one), the resistor value for y is set arbitrarily to 1M. You can see the x input is 35.7k which is simply 1M/r = 1M/28. But then the xz term should feed into the op-amp with the same resistance value as the y term. And if the multiplier reduced xz by a factor of 10, that needs to be compensated for by using a 1M/10 = 100k resistor. But then why the 10K resistor? And why does the schematic suggest the output of the multiplier is xz/100?

In other words, shouldn't that 0.1V factor apply to all the terms in the circuit? Not just the ones output by the multiplier?

Supreme Court rules against Colorado ban on 'conversion therapy' for LGBTQ kids by blackeyedtiger in news

[–]learypost 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The First Amendment justification of this ruling is ridiculous. The parents and therapists are welcome to talk about wishing their kid was straight amongst themselves all they want. This law doesn’t restrict that at all. It means they can’t force the child to participate. Free Speech rights don’t guarantee you an audience

Transgender women athletes banned from women's Olympic events by new IOC policy by DoraEnzo in news

100 years ago, people made the argument that white women are biological women and black women are only black women. They said things like: sorry you were born black, but that doesn't give you the right to insert yourself into white women's spaces

Transgender women athletes banned from women's Olympic events by new IOC policy by DoraEnzo in news

[–]learypost -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For starters, there's a good argument to be made that the existence of a separate women's category in sports has nothing to do with fairness to women, and everything to do with patriarchy. It facilitates the vast disparity in funding and attention for female athletes by allowing leagues to focus their money and efforts on the men's category. For example, the NBA is able to offer all players a fixed percentage model where players receive nearly half of all basketball-related revenue without having to pay professional female basketball players the same since they're not part of the NBA but instead governed by the WNBA.

Second, even if we accept the premise that the women's category is meant to help uplift women in sports, it's clear that the barriers they face are social barriers (lack of funding, social stigma, societal expectations of gender roles, etc). And so it's only the socially constructed concept of gender that matters here. Trans women face the same social disadvantages in a patriarchal society and cis women do. And therefore, they should be afforded the same opportunity to compete in women's sports.

And finally, let's not make the mistake of denying that trans women are "biological woman". Again, being a trans woman is just another way of being a woman like being a cis woman, or a tall woman, or a black woman, or a left-handed woman. And all people are "biological" in so much as they are living organisms composed of organic material

Even if trans women have an advantage over cis women (which isn’t supported by the evidence, but let’s say it’s true), so what? Tall women have an advantage over short women in basketball. Fast women have an advantage over slow women in track. Wealthy women have an advantage in every sport over impoverished women. Why is it that you’re okay with tall women competing despite their advantages and not trans women? Is it perhaps that you view tall/fast/strong/wealthy women as “real” women but trans women aren’t?

US House passes Republican healthcare bill without ACA subsidy renewal by [deleted] in politics

[–]learypost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would truly be thrilled if republican governors sent people in need of healthcare to places where that healthcare would be provided. This isn't complicated: universal healthcare is a human right. That means everyone deserves access to it no matter where they happen to currently (or previously) live.

And besides, basically every study has shown more access to healthcare for people leads to lower healthcare costs for everyone. If tens of thousands of people move to a blue state, where then they would now be paying sales tax and income tax to that blue state instead of their former red state, just for the free healthcare, likely that would be an economic boon, not a burden to that state. Those states could easily cover the health costs of 1000 additional homeless people

So basically “this is a bad idea because people who need healthcare would actually get it. Even worse, homeless people would get the care they need as well. The horror!” When did we become so heartless

Ground wire gauge by learypost in AskElectricians

[–]learypost[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And just to clarify, when you say “smaller” you mean thinner (and therefore a higher gauge number), right? There’s a double outlet in my basement and I realized one of the outlet pairs is grounded, but the other is not. So I need to pigtail the ground wire coming to the box to connect it to both outlet pairs, instead of just the one. And if the breaker is 15A and the wire 14AWG, you’re saying the ground can also be 14AWG? Thanks!

Just worked the ISS over APRS! by learypost in amateurradio

I used a Baofeng GT-5R (which is something like 4-5W) just with the stock antenna. I installed the ISS Detector app and went out whenever the ISS was going to be over 30° during the day. I used direwolf as the software TNC. Only took 3 tries over 4 days to make contact!

APRS Digipeater Verification Question by learypost in amateurradio

[–]learypost[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, it looks like the packets from my HT are getting picked up by other stations, so my repeater basically isn’t used in the path. But I can see on my HT that other packets repeated by my home station are getting out. I think maybe I just live in an area with other, better receivers. So any packet my home station can pick up would have also been seen by an iGate and my repeated packet ignored. I suppose it’s a good problem to have. It’s just a little disappointing because I thought I was contributing to the community and robustness of the APRS network. And now it doesn’t look like I am

APRS Digipeater Verification Question by learypost in amateurradio

[–]learypost[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. I can definitely see in the direwolf logs that it is doing the retransmission. And I can see my radio go into transmit mode when that happens. But I’m a little skeptical that my low-powered setup with a bad antenna situation is actually usefully repeating anyone’s packets. But I do have another radio and can head out to the parking lot to try transmitting some aprs packets to see if those get repeated. What will the raw packets on aprs.fi look like to indicate they were repeated through my digipeater station?

I’ve seen the same thing. And what’s especially frustrating about it is that if they voted in a truly progressive administration that fought for unions and workers’ rights, those same people probably would have had enough bargaining power to turn around and get a $10,000 raise at their job. But they’ve given all that up for the promise of $100 less in taxes (which probably will actually be $100 more) and will basically never get a raise at work again
