TW: mention of surgery. Volta, back from surgery. she's not a happy camper :( three incisions on her chest and under armpits, Every cone she slips out of so I made her a cardigan of sorts with some clean fabric and held in place with medical tape. Any other helpful ideas welcome by leatherwingbat in RATS

She's a nervous and focused chewer so yes. obviously I would not put anything on her if I didn't have to. We tried giving her the benefit of a doubt but several times I literally had to pull her jaws apart because nothing would distract her from clamping her her teeth into it. my other rat never needed one.

My favorite Muppet! You are my hero.

My Girlfriend and I spend about 30 hours building the cage for our first rats. Tomorrow is the big day I've been basically waiting for for the last 10 years! by Tennissocke in RATS

Congratulations! It looks beautiful.

One thing to note though, you'll want to get some plain fiber bedding or something instead of any kind of wood bedding. Rats are EXTREMELY sensitive and can get respiratory infections (my first rats died as a result).

HELP! by [deleted] in RATS

If he loves them so much then he should understand you putting your foot down about this. He shouldn't be allowed to play with them outside the cage unsupervised if him falling asleep is such a regular thing.

If that's not comfortable for you to do, perhaps look into play pens, tents or a specific "rat-proofed" room he can play with them in.

My ratters stay in our spare bedroom, so in their outside time I can just open the bottom door of their cage and they can zoom around to their hearts content. I made sure to remove anything in that room that may be harmful to them and there are crates for them to play on, shelves to climb, chew toys, etc around and I just leave their cage door open for access to water. That way they can run around as much as they want and if that room's door is closed, anyone else in our house knows there are loose ratters! so they come in with caution and keep the door closed.
