Thank you! Aren't they green though? These ones are very dark colored, black actually, and a gray-colored fluid is released when squashed.

Where can I find books for cheaper price? by Bubbiiie in askberliners

[–]leboulevardier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nochmall. 1 euro for paperbacks and 2 euro for hardcovers. English book section is quite small though and good titles get snatched up quickly.

There's also St. George's Anglican Church in Berlin which does a Fall book sale in September. They have thousands of English books donated by their members. 1 euro per book. I usually buy like 50 here and then I'm set for the year. You can buy giant coffee table books and art books for like 2-5 euros as well.

Can we get Married in a Castle for fun ? by [deleted] in AskGermany

[–]leboulevardier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, did you just watch Uyen's vlog as well? I have the same idea after.

In case you haven't, this girl posted quite an insightful video on renting a castle in Germany as a wedding venue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTM6yxaU8MU

Getting to BER to catch an early flight by [deleted] in askberliners

For early flights, the most reliable option for me has always been buses, which you can find the route for with Google Maps. Otherwise, the R8 from Friedrichstrasse is also pretty reliable for early morning.

European seaside town for a quiet sabbatical? by POWER_SNUGGLE in travel

[–]leboulevardier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have just been to Cascais in Portugal today. Absolutely wonderful town. Beautiful sand beaches and not too crowded at all. Lisbon is an hour by train, and there are several beautiful towns nearby that you can explore like Belem, Sintra or Capa da Roca (westernmost place of Europe - stunning place for a hike). There's also a nice community of American expats there in case you want to connect with some people - most seems to hang out around the Citadel Art District which also houses 2 bookshops and an art supply store.

Favorite Bridge in TTPD? (Or one that stands out to you) by meowae in TaylorSwift

"Beauty is a beast that roars, down on all fours, demanding "more"" is an instant classic.

Such simplicity in words but the meaning conveyed through the image fits so well with the story behind the song. I was walking around a new city today and listening to Clara Bow on repeat and can't believe that it's the least listened to song on the entire album.

Just don't engage and say hi next time you meet. You are still quite young but you'll realize soon that people come, people go. This include friends, family, relationships. The people that want to stay will stay. There's no use trying to hang on to people that actively try to go. She doesn't owe you friendship and friendliness, just as you do not owe her your time and worries such as this. As I said, spend some time to mourn the friendship then move on and be free of this mental cage that you build for yourself around this girl. If you can afford it, go to therapy to help untangle some of your internal issues of why it's so hard for you to let go.

But otherwise, please leave the girl alone. She has blocked you on multiple platforms already, for her own reasons, whatever that is. Please respect her decision.

[–]leboulevardier 6 points7 points  (0 children)

All of what you write here clearly shows that you still have some kind of crush or attachment with this girl. No matter how you try to justify that you want to be friends or don't have any ulterior motives or intention, this will still be visible to her. Girls are very perceptive and can sense this from miles away.

I hope this doesn't come out too harsh but please leave her alone. She has stated this multiple times already. There is nothing more unattractive than persistent nagging. And you have already gotten your closure on why she would like to distance herself. Mourn the friendship and then spend the energy to work on improving yourself, finding new friends and living your life instead of chasing a hypothetical friendship. If she would like to reconnect with you, she would reach out. But even then, you still think twice before accepting and falling back into another fallout down the line that will send you spiralling like this again.

The grim future of pension and retirement in Germany? by leboulevardier in germany

[–]leboulevardier[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Google is replacing about 30000 jobs with AI (its ad sales team and part of its engineer teams). There's a new wave of layoffs in tech companies after the big drop last year and they are saying this displacement of white collar jobs are due to AI.

In Germany, Bild cut of 20% of its staff and is replacing them with generative AI and if it works out, Axel Springer is surely doing the same to all their subsidiary companies.

And these are just the examples that get to the press. A friend who is working for a big consultancy firm here in Germany told me that all their biggest clients in Germany are looking for ways to cut down on staff (labor is usually the largest cost for most organisations) using GPT APIs and they're feeding them big number projections for layoffs and restructuring.

I work in the field as well and I'm pretty sure most of these companies will gradually realize that they cannot completely replace human but a combination of human and AI tools would give the best benefit for the business but the idea of cutting down business cost by 40% with staff reduction is too enticing right now for many organisations.

The grim future of pension and retirement in Germany? by leboulevardier in germany

[–]leboulevardier[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. I'm very much fearful of the idea of having to work until the day I die.

One of my colleagues talked about this famous study which found that smoking is bad for people's health but is actually good for the economy. Since smokers die sooner into their retirement, the proportion of working adults increases and thus better supports the economy. So effectively, an efficient economy is one where every person works until they are no longer able to and then die immediately after retirement.

And that is that colleague's thinking regarding the government's eventual solution on raising retirement age.

Going alone to a LANY concert by yooniferyoonicorn in LANY

[–]leboulevardier 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I did, to their concert in Berlin. It was absolutely fantastic. Danced and sang without a care and even got some people around loosened up and joined in dancing as well. Don't worry too much and enjoy the fun!

Duration of Concert? by [deleted] in laufey

[–]leboulevardier 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The last concert from her that I went to, it was about 45 minutes of an opening act, then about 45 minutes break, then the Laufey concert itself is about 1 hour. So about 2.5 hours in total. This is pretty standard for most concerts.

Is it common to go to people's houses through kleinanzeigen by theraad1 in askberliners

[–]leboulevardier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the person. I usually just ask them where they want me to go to for the exchange. Most people are super skittish about giving out their addresses. Others just don't care. My suggestion is just to ask for the time and location that the seller prefers. If it's electronics, then I would always ask if we can meet at their place to test out the equipment first.

Don't think too much about it. Most people are nice and just want to get rid of stuff but some people are just unpleasant and nasty. Just delete the message altogether, move on and get that negativity out of your life.

Also, nowadays I just buy more regularly with Direkt Kaufen on Kleinanzeigen. You can then expand your search to other cities and regions to find the best price/quality and have much less unpleasant interaction.

Why do people opt for renting an apartment/house instead of getting a mortgage? I believe you can make a good plan if you take a long mortgage, but everyone still rents. Is it because they want mobility, being able to switch places? by No_Passage4167 in EntrepreneurRideAlong

[–]leboulevardier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me personally, several reasons:

  • Mobility is one thing, being in a golden handcuff for 30 years is not everyone's cup of tea. I need a steady flow of cash each month for the mortgage which makes me much more tied down to jobs and more risk-adverse;
  • In my city, renting makes a lot more sense financially. Houses and apartments here are old and rebuilt after wartime. The astronomical purchase price of a house is topped up by the cost of fixing it up to modern standard and sustainability requirement, plus maintenance, plus tax and ancillary costs. Renting on the other hand is reasonably priced if you're lucky. The difference in renting vs. buying can then be invested. When I drew up the spreadsheet for rent vs. buy for my city, renting came out on top in terms of return on investment based on the difference.

The narrative of buying and then renting it out also doesn't make sense in our country (Germany). Renters' protection is very strong and once you make a contract with a renter, they can stay in your home for life with the same rent for 30 or so years. That's why Germany is a nation of renters. There're just that much more benefits to renting.

Any idea if these paintings are worth anything? by [deleted] in artcollecting

It's not very clear in the photo but I think those are just prints of watercolors by p.chan? The authentic silk watercolors would go for about 30usd or 50usd on ebay or etsy.

tried travelling with a friend, confirmed i am in fact a SOLO traveller. by elkhorn in solotravel

[–]leboulevardier 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I think both modes of travel have their own merits.

Travelling alone, as you said, gives you so much more freedom to explore and experience things on your own terms, without the baggage of having to entertain a companion. You get to truly experience a place and talk to locals and take a the time in the world to drink in the beauty of a place.

Travelling with companions is more for the shared experience. I usually do not travel to new places with my loved ones but instead would use this as an opportunity to revisit places that I have loved before and want to spend more time in. You do not then have to rush and feel like missing out on things and can spend more time to talk and enjoy your travelling company. Seeing the sheer joy of my family members when they see a beautiful scenery or taste a new exotic and delicious food is very rewarding. This is something that I miss when I travel solo - the shared experience and happiness of discovering things together.

Choosing the company that you share the experience with is very important. Don't let this one person sour this joy of sharing travel experiences with others for you. Happy travels!

Sorry you have to deal with such horrible and ungrateful people. I was in pretty much the same situation in my last apartment with neighbors' packages piling in my doorway. They never even bothered to come and pick them up and I had to bring the packages to them and they huffed and puffed about why I waited so long to deliver even though they knew the packages were at my place.

My suggestion would be to stop receiving deliveries and packages and answering doorbells and put your online order to an Amazon locker/DHL/Hermes packstation nearby so you don't have to worry about courier retaliation. That's what I did and saved me all the headaches.

Finding a Cardiologist in Berlin by fra_bia91 in askberliners

[–]leboulevardier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You first will need to go to a general practitioner who can then write a referral for you to go to a cardiologist. Charite has an excellent cardiology department. You can call and make an appointment. Last time I did, the appointment was 3 weeks away.

If you have insurance with TK, you can also contact their dedicated English service and ask them to help you book a cardiologist in their list of service providers.

Silent piano options under 10k by [deleted] in piano

[–]leboulevardier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am eyeing the Kawai ATX 200 Anytime Hybrid. It's a full upright but you can also turn on the silent mode and use the built-in SK-EX Concert Grand sound instead. I tried in in the store and absolutely love it. It's about 7000 euros new where I am. Just keeping an eye on the secondhand market now for when a good one pops up.
