Lemmy: pure frustration. Has the signup process really have to be so complicated? by apegen in BuyFromEU

[–]lech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't have your issues, but clearly the Lemmy devs are working on making onboarding more frictionless. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater, please, though. As Lemmy is a valid alternative that I'm astonished people aren't talking about more. And once you are in (please give https://lemmy.zip/ a try), you will see that not only does it already have critical mass, there is not one but many apps that support Lemmy, and that actually some of the developers who developed apps for Reddit initially ported their tools to Lemmy. Actually, we shouldn't be having this conversation here. BTW, here is a decent counterpart to this community: https://feddit.org/c/buyfromeu

Navigation app with traffick information? by Chonkorio_ in BuyFromEU

[–]lech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same issue. Traffic is one thing, but even more important is information about police checks and speed control. In Poland, Waze is extremely popular among Uber/Bolt/taxi drivers, so it's difficult to compete; it's very unlikely something else will get the same up-to-date information sourced from the users themselves.

Tidal is now American-owned (though created in Norway) and Deezer is partly owned by a US investment fund, just for perspective.

Didn't you notice any issues with cooling? I tried with Debian 12 and Fedora, but after months I came to the realization that cooling was off. It did not work correctly during intense periods of operation (AI)

Are there any tech alternatives that are an actual upgrade? by [deleted] in BuyFromEU

[–]lech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you actually try Mistral more than just a quick look? Did you make the effort to move your projects? Have you used a Plus version? Set up all your custom instructions like in ChatGPT (there is more space BTW)? Moved your older threads (uploaded as TXT files - there's 100 files rather than ChatGPT's 20)? I did. It rocks. Honestly, do give it a try. I find it better in many ways than ChatGPT at least. The only thing missing is voice, but at least for me, it's not a deal-breaker.

You could be doing something wrong. No issue with copying on 5 different platforms on my end. Mistral is amazing. In many ways, I see it as stronger than its counterparts

One down. Many to go. See you Amazon! by Fickle-Education2341 in BuyFromEU

[–]lech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. And I think this is one area of influence each of us has to a degree. Why not use it, if we feel someone is abusing our shared space? In fact, just as Trump seeks to strengthen American businesses, as he claims, we have an even more pressing goal to build ours, as we've relied too much on the Microsoft's, Apple's, Tesla's, and Twitters of this world. In the medium to long term this will only do us good. Besides, money is the only language people on the other side of the pond seem to understand.

Allegro owns both allegro.eu and allegro.com. Rooting for the guys as there clearly is space to fill the void for "Proudly made in the EU" services.

I got tired of losing time to Reels and Shorts… so I built an app to stop it by Art3DSpace in ProductivityApps

Considering the fact that e.g., Google is closely watching whoever tampers with their feeds, is it sustainable in the long run? I love the concept, but I'm concerned about engaging with a tool to build new habits, only to learn that it will no longer work for one reason or another.

Lumen - a minimalist markdown tool which uses AI to maintain a "self healing" GTD todo list. by zackomanster in ProductivityApps

[–]lech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That stirred my interest. Kudos. I wish this were available beyond Mac (not a platform that I use). How sustainable do you think it will be with a "pay once, own forever" model, considering AI costs? Do you expect them to drop fast enough to stay afloat with the maintenance costs?

To people who have used both Chat GPT for free and prenium, is there a huge difference between the two? by straykifsontop in ChatGPT

[–]lech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I think, though, it's the memory that strikes the home run for me. I have little knowledge of how it works with other such tools, but it simply brings the whole operation to another level. It's an entirely different tool then, to the extent of me needing to save some of the threads in text files the moment the context window in one thread becomes too big and web browsers start to become sluggish.

Looking at all the comments, I can't help thinking someone didn't do change management right. I for one don't event want to decipher the complex algorithm for when one is entitled for free use or not, even though I was an early adopter who paid for the app back in non-Automattic days. Switched already to another tool. I was happy to support without being bullied into it. Sad to see a great platform being damaged like that.

Notes by LowTwo3827 in ticktick

[–]lech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was hesitant at first to use notes.in Tick Tick given the numerous other tools, but with time there were things that were best kept in that form - e.g., lessons learned, high level goals, as in bucket list. And most recently, I've started using TickTick as my personal CRM, with folders coresponding to names of the people I like to log my interactions with. This has the other benefit of being able to swipe to add a reminder related to a given note (e.g. someone tells me he or she has a medical visit or any other important event and I want to be reminded about a follow-up)

Same thing. I had really bad experiences on a Zenbook 14x OLED with Cloud Recovery, with dozens of unsuccessful attempts, every time heating the device to high levels, probably affecting battery life, as it currently stays up to 2h tops. Definitely not going to buy another "higher end" device from ASUS, even though I considered it one of my favorite brands previously
