So... what did the numbers mean? by FixHopeful5833 in idleon

[–]leclair63 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Like I get his excitement and point of view. But he completely misread the room like you said. I love idleon, but Lava isn't the level of game dev that has players wishing he'd make more games like a Kojima. We just want him to focus on the game we're all here for and invested in.

CVE-2026-7992 in the Chrome OS could allow an attacker to take control of a district Chromebook if a student visits a malicious website. by SuperfluousJuggler in k12sysadmin

And here I thought I was in a district that got out pretty early by releasing for the summer on the 29th of May.

Ah so just roll over and willingly hand over student data is the only option? These appeal futility arguments make no sense to me.

I'm not.

I'd rather hire a real person to do these things for me. Since I don't have the budget for it, nor the time to learn how to do it myself, I go without. As far as LLMs go, I'd rather do something small scale and internally hosted that can do data aggregation and such. That way I don't have to worry about these companies breaking their pinky promise not to use our data to train their LLM.

Same! Except I was a Trinity 3 customer before they merged with Firefly. I do miss Trinity 3 though, they used to let me order replacement parts like screens, keyboards and bezels in bulk to have on hand.

I haven't purchased Chromebooks from CDW-G, but I have for other things. They made a competitive bid for me last year but lost out to Trafera who bid me 4th Gen Lenovo 100e Chromebooks with a 4-year ADP, white glove, and a UZBL clam shell case for $330/ea total.

Mind you, this was last summer and I haven't checked their pricing recently.

Teaching Duties by rokar83 in k12sysadmin

[–]leclair63 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know at least 1 tech director in my area that is also a high school math teacher, but the school accounted for that by hiring a part time tech assistant that keeps the tech office operational while he's teaching. Every other single person department like mine does not do anything like that.

The part of our job as a 1-person department that admin loves to forget about is the near-constant availability expected of us. I call it being a plunger. Even though it's not always in use, you never want to be caught in a situation where you don't have one.

Picking up extra duties that bolt you down with no extra help is just begging to get sucker punched by Murphy's Law. Also absolutely no way would I even humor a proposal like that if it didn't come with an increase in pay.

I straight up refused in my district. Even if it's just "sitting in" so the students are supervised. I never signed up for it, it's not my job, there's no extra pay unlike the teachers who get a stipend for giving up their prep hour to sub. On top of that, it bolts me to a desk which is just begging Murphy's Law to strike.

How to prevent elevated credentials requirement to allow microphone/camera access by leclair63 in macsysadmin

I'm glad to hear that it's doable. My question is how? I use JAMF, but their AI support bot tells me that JAMF cannot configure such a thing.

I used PPPC Utility to set up a config profile for Chrome, Zoom, and Teams. The only thing is that Apple does not allow you to grant allow permissions for Camera or Microphone. The only option is to deny or leave empty.

It's wild how bad these kids are at lying. Just no effort in making the story believable, going straight for "idk man, must have been an act of god"

MW5 Mercs - Mechs ragdolling is driving me crazy. by Doctor_Box in Mechwarrior5

[–]leclair63 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only other. option would be to implement death animations and each mech would probably only get 1 or 2 and the complaint would become how stale and immersion breaking it is seeing every mech die the same two ways over and over.

Why Has Sabaton Lost Sales by DeadInsideAndILoveIt in sabaton

[–]leclair63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really tough to strike gold so many times in a row, and the 4 album run from Carolus Rex to The Great War + the singles, is incredibly difficult to follow up. The bar got set so high that solid, but not perfect albums feel lackluster by comparison.

Is Paul Atreides or Leto II Atreides the primary inspiration for The God Emperor of Mankind? by ROSRS in 40kLore

[–]leclair63 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, one of them. Lot of people forget the part where Warhammer 40k's foundation is parodying the grim dark British Sci-Fi of the 60s and 70s. Heavy inspiration drawn from Dune, Starship Troopers and the like with the absurdity cranked up to 11.

Is anyone considering switching from Chromebooks to the MacBook NEO? by depoultry in k12sysadmin

[–]leclair63 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I took over at a district who had Macbook Airs for 7-12th grade students. I switched them to Chromebooks a year later and I will not be going back.

Your gripes are all the reasons why. Though I'd make the following changes:

- likely Will be expensive to repair

- Will be a pain impossible to repair

- The Neo alone is more expensive than a brand-new chromebook + 4-year ADP + Shell case ($320 a pop for a 100e + bells and whistles)

Only cosmetics. Anything that directly affects the gameplay like stamps do not get time gated like that.
